Suez Canal and opera “Aida“. What unites them?

It is known that the Suez Canal are provided by the shortest way between ports of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, and the opera “Aida“ of Giuseppe Verdi is the outstanding piece of music, interest in which does not weaken eventually. The fact that the premiere of the opera is inseparably linked with opening of navigation across the Suez Canal is interesting.

History of the channel connecting Mediterranean and Red exhausting contains not one millennium. According to historians, at the time of fivansky Pharaohs, attempts to dig the channel connecting the right sleeve of Nile to the Red Sea were made.

In 7 - 6 centuries B.C. at the Pharaoh Nekho the channel which connected Red and Mediterranean exhausting, it was built. Called this waterway the canal of Pharaohs.

With end of an era of Pharaohs, navigation on the channel fell into decay. After a gain of Egypt Arabs the channel in 642 was restored, but in 776 for political and economic reasons conquerors filled up it.

The idea of construction of the channel arose during an era of the colonial partition of the world again. Egypt was a rivalry subject between Great Britain and France, and Great Britain which had at that time the largest fleet was against a construction of the channel.

But in 1859 construction nevertheless began and successfully came to the end in ten years. Egyptians who were taken on 60 thousand monthly were the main labor. Many of them died from wearisome work and epidemics.

The authorities of Egypt in 1868, preparing for opening of navigation on the channel, ordered to the famous Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi the opera based on the Egyptian legend. But that undertook writing of “Aida“ only in 1870. The composer received 30 thousand dollars for the work that corresponds to 300 thousand for today, and basic rights on work remained for Verdi.

The French Egyptologist Mariette was a scriptwriter of the opera. At a script writing he used the legend which is written down on the papyrus describing events of the period of fight of the Egyptian Pharaohs against Ethiopia. The pure and tragic love of the leader of the Egyptian troops Radames and slave of the Aida, the daughter of the Ethiopian tsar was opposed to cruelty of Pharaohs.

In 1882 Egypt was occupied by British. And only in 1953 Egypt was freed and was proclaimed the independent republic. Troops of Great Britain were disengaged. The Suez Canal in 1956 was nationalized.

Ruling circles of the USA, Great Britain, France tried to put pressure upon the government of Egypt, considering that the channel needs to be internationalized. But sovereignty of Egypt on the canal was fixed by the decision of the UN Security Council.

This event was the cause for English - free - the Israeli aggression. And only in 1974, after withdrawal of the Israeli troops, restoration of the channel began. In June, 1975 navigation on the channel was restored.

In August, 2014 began a construction of the second string of the Suez Canal, and in July, 2015 the main works came to the end. The new course 35 km long was dug, 37 km of old are expanded and deepened. It will give the chance by 2023 to increase the capacity of the channel from 49 vessels to 97 in days. Also to reduce passing time from 10 - 12 to three o`clock.

The ceremonial opening of the New Suez Canal took place on August 6 the current year. Large-scale festival cost to the budget of Egypt almost 30 million dollars. Opening began with fireworks early in the morning. Then started an avia - show during which nine swimmers stretched a five-kilometer flag of Egypt on the channel.

In the same day souvenir gold coins with an inscription “The new Suez Canal &ndash went on sale; gift of Egypt to the world“.

At opening of the New channel omission of 1869 &ndash was corrected; the opera “Aida“ was presented directly on the bank of the channel. The leading TV channels of the world conducted a live broadcast of this event. In many large cities inhabitants could see this action on the huge screens placed into central squares.

There is a wish to believe that today nothing will sadden activity, necessary to the whole world, the Suez Canal. And on its coast the legendary opera singing of love and the right for independence of all people will continue to sound.
