What will help to get rid of alcoholic dependence? Virtual reality!Virtual reality are capable to influence rather real things. It is applied to treatment of phobias and post-traumatic stressful frustration. South Korea investigates possibilities of therapy by means of virtual reality of alcoholic dependence. Results of researchers demand specification, but demonstrate ample opportunities of digital technologies.
The virtual reality is a computer model, the world created by technical means which people perceive and with which interact, using both abilities of own body, and a possibility of smart gadgets.
Various helmets, points, accelerometers, gloves and gyroscopes are widely used in video games. But the virtual reality is capable not only to provide pleasant and interesting pastime, but also to influence rather real things. For example, to treat people.
Therapy by means of virtual reality is used for treatment of phobias and post-traumatic stressful frustration. According to researchers from University hospital of Chung - Ang (Chung - Ang University Hospital), the virtual reality is capable to help with Seoul to the people suffering from alcoholic dependence. At the patients participating in research after a detoxication and sessions of virtual therapy thirst for alcohol decreased.
At treatment of disturbing frustration the virtual reality is used for modeling and repeated repetition in the safe and controlled environment of the situations causing fear and horror in patients. By means of virtual models of patients train in the correct actions which will help to cope with a disturbing state if similar modelled a situation arises in the real world. It is considered that repeated contacts with the reasons of concerns do the last habitual and weaken the dependence causing sufferings.
By means of virtual reality of alcoholic dependence doctor Doug Hen Khan (Doug Hyun Han) and its colleagues attracted 12 patients to research of opportunities of treatment. Prior to research with all patients carried out a number of tests to study processes of a metabolism in a brain.
In comparison with group of healthy volunteers, at all patients with alcoholic dependence revealed faster metabolism of limbic system of a brain that, according to Khan, indicates hypersensibility to irritants, including - to alcohol.
After a week course of a detoxication patients passed 10 sessions of therapy by virtual reality. Twice a week to them modelled one of three situations: weakening, provoking (for example, “placed“ the patient in restaurant where all people around drank alcoholic drinks) and causing disgust (sounds and smells of the people who took too much alcohol).
After five weeks of virtual therapy patients repeatedly passed the tests similar to that were carried out prior to treatment. It turned out that at all patients the fast metabolism of limbic system was slowed down that assumes decrease in thirst for alcohol.
According to doctor Khan, results of his work demand specifications during additional researches, but demonstrate that the virtual reality can help the patients suffering from alcoholic dependence. Efficiency of new technology of treatment is caused by the fact that the patient not just is located in the conditions close to real, but from it active participation and counteraction to circumstances is required.
