“Eugene Onegin“: novel, opera, movie. What strange is in Olga?

V to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky`s opera are microscopic strangeness - Olga`s aria is written in the lower register, for a contralto that does not correspond to her attitude at all: “I am carefree and playful, all call me the child“.

“Lizaveta Andreevna was silent and is good-natured smiled as she suddenly told: “And to take “Eugene Onegin“?“ This thought seemed to me wild, and I answered nothing. Lizaveta Andreevna Lavrovskaya (1845 - 1919) is the singer - a contralto with which Tchaikovsky shared creativity torments: there is no plot for the opera.

It is almost impossible to add something to what is written about “Eugene Onegin“. History of two young people (and then already - and not absolutely young), history of two girls - sisters... Both histories are designated in the novel by the strokes which are snatched out by bright events: acquaintance, friendship (if it is possible to call it so), duel, death of the poet, Olga`s marriage, Tatyana`s marriage, meek feeling of Onegin...

Who they are were, heroes of the novel? Young men for 18 years to everyone. Onegin grew up in Russia, in the same place got an education (at least, the abroad in its biography is not designated). The dandy, the lady`s man, the seducer - we will notice, successful and highly experienced:

As it early could disturb

of Heart of coquettes note!

its main line during this period - indifference to people. And rage:

When He wanted to destroy

of the rivals,

As he venomously talked scandal!

What networks prepared for them!

Yes, and hypocrisy:

But you, blessed husbands,

C to them remained you friends...

In eighteen years he was already satiated with capital life (it is possible to imagine as far as it was rough and aimless!) and, having come into a fortune, goes to the country. Occasionally, it adjoins to Vladimir Lensky who inherits a manor too, and to it eighteen years too. But it arrived from - for borders, from Goettingen. What he studied there - not clearly, and returned the dreamer, the poet from there:

It from Germany foggy

Brought learnings fruits:

Freedom-loving dreams,

Spirit ardent and quite strange,

Always the enthusiastic speech

I curls black to shoulders.

the Artless gawk - can so characterize it:

He believed that the kindred spirit

And at the same time it represented from itself(himself) the person who learned everything:

It is natural that young, beautiful, rich became the welcome guest in houses where there were brides:

But Lensky, not imev, of course,

of Hunting marriage bonds nest...

So, two young men met with boredom, with boredom visit to each other, about something speak (naturally, about family and not family life too). And if Onegin already cooled down in the feelings, then at Lensky - on the contrary, the love blossomed in all power (though as it was told, he did not seek to marry at all):

Ah, he loved as in ours the summer

is not loved Any more; as one

Mad soul of the poet

Still to love is condemned:

Always, everywhere one dream,

One habitual desire,

One habitual grief.

Who subject of his dreams? Olga Larina, the neigbour with whom together they grew:

Slightly the adolescent, Olgoyu captivated of

of Warm torments yet not znav,

He was a witness touched

of her infantile entertainments;

In a shadow of a hranitelny oak grove

It divided its entertainments...

It is absolutely not clear at what age they left. Perhaps, separation lasted year or two. Lensky, probably, did not graduate, returned to Russia to inherit a manor. It, having returned, fell in love. And what is done by the poet in love? Writes verses. What he it saw?

It is always modest, is always obedient,

Always as is cheerful morning,

As life of the poet is ingenuous,

As a kiss of love is lovely;

of an Eye as sky, blue,

Smile, ringlets linen,

of the Movement, voice, easy camp...
Onegin learns

about Lensky`s addiction to the neigbour and arises to go to it together.

Friends on a visit - and here Tatyana appears. Pushkin did not give it any tangible lines. But it describes Olga in this scene from Onegin`s position:

In lines Olga has no life.

Exactly - in - exactly in Vandikova Madonna...

(it is about “Madonna with partridges“ of Van Dyck`s work, the Hermitage).
Onegin dances

On a ball with Olga, Olga promises it still dance, Lensky is enraged, it leaves with intention to be shot. And what has happened? Practically anything: the subject of its worship showed not God knows what signs of attention to another. And this another should be taught a good lesson, it should show that honor of the poet is touched and demands vengeance. So, duel, terrible shot.

Onegin is upset, Olga too, but through short time she married - and was consoled that.

Onegin and Tatyana meet through how many - that years: Tatyana is married, Evgeny - is unmarried. Its attempt to approach it failed: “Oh, pathetic my lot! “

Here in rough overall picture. According to the novel the libretto of the opera “Eugene Onegin“ was written, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky`s music is amazing! But in the opera there is small, one may say, microscopic feature - Olga`s aria.

The author of the text of the aria - the librettist, Pushkin has no such lines in the novel, Olga is dumb, except for her questions to Lensky: “Why evening so early disappeared?“ and “That with you?“ Probably, it was necessary though somehow to designate both Olga, and her relation with Tatyana - they run on a wheat field, and Olga sings the aria:

I am incapable of grief languid,

Ya I do not like to dream in calm

Or on a balcony at the night of dark

to Sigh, sigh, sigh

From soul depth.

Why to sigh when it is happy

my days young flow.

Ya is carefree and playful, the child all call Me


Two last lines are sung in the lower register, to the limit by a contralto moreover and with delay - an obvious contradiction with playfulness.

Why Tchaikovsky gave to Olga such musical characteristic? The librettist and the composer created such character which does not correspond to Lensky`s attitude at all. And Onegin who told about Olga understood it: “the krugla, is red the person it as this silly moon in this silly firmament“, than put to Lensky the first wound (by the way, Olga in the movie is played by Svetlana Nemolyaeva, at that time full-faced and quite well-fad).

One of versions: the composer defined in advance that Olga is Lavrovskaya, and gave her the aria by its opportunities. It is unknown whether Lavrovskaya in “Eugene Onegin“ sang. Most likely, she refused - too small party, an episode.

Second version: the librettist and the composer specially “issued“ to Olga such musical characteristic that listeners had no illusions concerning its attitude towards Lensky - “is carefree and playful“.

Perhaps, both versions are right. To specify there is nobody.
