Twins at school

Now on average the birth of one twin couple is the share of each 100 childbirth in the world.

At all times the birth of twins was the unusual phenomenon which was surprising and curiosity. In many cultures the subject of twins was reflected in mythology (enough at least to remember founders of Rome - Romula and Ram). In different ethnic groups there are quite wide (yet not explained) distinctions of frequency of polycarpous childbirth. It is known that about one third of all twins is made by monogerminal and two thirds - dizygotic couples.

Life of twins is unusual

the fact that two children are at one stage of physical and mental development, they constantly communicate with each other, have similar life experience. Such couple is, first of all, a unique social situation. The French researcher R. Zazzo was the first psychologist who deeply investigated “a twin situation“. He considered it as a factor of intellectual and personal development of twins.

Personal problems

Children - twins at preschool age often lag behind in speech development the “ordinary“ peers. It can lead further to their lag in the general intellectual development. Parents too early begin to consider little twins as full-fledged partners in communication and often provide them to themselves.

But what two one-and-a-half-year-old children can teach each other to? Through communication with the adult the kid learns world around in all its variety. Communicating with each other, twins develop clear only to them to two language in which gestures, a mimicry and other nonverbal means of communication prevail.

it is frequent them even parents do not understand. The more twins communicate thus, the stronger they become attached to each other and are as if fenced off from others. Later, at teenage age, the protest against such excessive identity can lead to emergence of the conflict relations between twins.

the Delay in speech development can be combined by

with social immaturity, the complicated communication with peers and tutors, and at school - and with teachers. Besides twins have problems in personal development. It is very difficult for them to separate itself from the with - the twin. It leads to the fact that one of them considers another as part of. Some lines of the personality developed at one do not develop adequately at another. At the same time twins do not feel the shortcomings. Emphasizing similarity of such couples, people around thereby form at them still big psychological identity.

Twins hardly get used to change of a situation, to collective. They are content with communication with the brother (or the sister) and do not seek for rapprochement with other children, and sometimes - actively oppose to contact.

Together or separately?

All these problems are anyway shown by

when twins come to school.

Already when forming the first classes to the school psychologist needs to pay attention to twins. Together with parents to discuss a question of whether to place children in one class or in different. There is no definite answer to this question. At decision-making it is necessary to consider several factors.

Training in one class is undesirable to

if in couple there is a pronounced competition, or one of twins is obviously dominating; if twins are not inclined to communication with people around. Nevertheless, at very close “symbiotic“ communication in couple or at noticeable lag in development division of children will become for them a stressful factor. It can negatively be reflected in their emotional state and in school progress.

the Decision on joint or separate training has to be perceived by

positively not only parents, but also children. If parents decided to divide twins, then it is desirable to give prior to the beginning of academic year to them the chance to get acquainted with a situation in a class, with future schoolmates.

of Twins are constantly compared with each other by teachers, relatives, children. Monogerminal twins, despite an identical set of genes, nevertheless differ from each other in many parameters. Therefore it is unreal to expect from them identical behavior in all cases of life. But similar expectations from people around interfere with personal development.

As it was already told, at many twins speech difficulties are observed. But at the same time they are not intelligently backward. Classes in development of the speech are simply necessary for them. It is necessary to remember that delays of speech development can affect also formation of skills of reading.

As the situation in Australia is?

Unfortunately, in our country practice of psychological maintenance of development and training of twins does not exist. In many countries there are special centers and services which help such families (in Italy, the USA, Australia, Germany, etc.) .

In Australia, for example, developed the Twins at School program helping such children to adapt to school. The Australian scientists conducted large-scale research and revealed the following problems.

In - the first, boys - twins are less capable to long concentration of attention and are less interested in the work. It is connected with the fact that twins often distract each other and therefore cannot long work in itself.

In - the second, twins at elementary school experience difficulties in the relations with peers and more often teachers try to draw to themselves attention. - to twins it is difficult for girls to develop the social skills necessary for maintenance of friendship with other children as they got used to rely on the fact that their bliznetsovost in itself draws attention of others.

B - the third, one of twins it becomes frequent the leader and/or the representative of couple in social contacts. This situation more often happens in heterosexual couples as the girl becomes a leader from - for the slowed-down speech development of the boy.

B - the fourth, since birth, twins are constantly compared with each other. And if one twin is considered “less capable“, nothing surprising that he meets these expectations.

in conclusion should tell

that many twins neither in preschool, nor do not experience difficulties in school age. It is necessary to treat with respect and attention for identity of each child and for unique relationship in couple.
