Be not afraid of a twilight of shadows

For those who are fond of landscaping, a shady garden - the real well for creativity. Even the apple-tree branches inclined under weight of fruits manage to fit into a panorama of flower beds successfully.

Somehow time, thumbing through a family album, I came across the photo of a garden of fifteen-year prescription - the first year of its development. Remembered our former despondency: a half of a site then represented open for the sun, the lowland flooded by a flood where at former owners beds “under vegetables“ were broken, and on other half, appear, ten thirty-year apple-trees attained the age. Where there was more chilly also seemingly enough place for our favourites - flowers, the twilight from entirely the bound branches of trees reigned. Thinning of kroner which was carried out to the first season did not yeild tangible result. But the summer stood roast, and the shadow of trees in a consolation gave us a saving cool and freshness. It was involuntarily thought: it is so much woods on our planet - for certain under their bed curtains there lives the set of plants for which a shadow the same pleasure, as well as for us now.

For comprehension of “secrets of a twilight“ we went deep into reading special literature, began to listen to opinion of other gardeners and to look narrowly at life of the wood situated near Moscow. It turned out that thousands of attractive plants not only transfer a shadow, but also harmoniously develop only at partial or full shading. The lower tier of all woods of a temperate climate is also the “tenelyuba“ adapted for life under kroner of larger plants in the conditions of an annual opad of foliage and needles. Since the childhood acquaintances on walks in the wood of a primrose, medunitsa, kopytna, an anemony, a zhivuchka, a sedge and ferns in all richest specific and high-quality variety harmoniously fit into shape of gardens situated near Moscow. Easily plants - inhabitants of the woods and shrubby thickets of Canada, the North of Western Europe, Siberia, the Far East and China adapt to our climate also. These are goryanka, geykher, hosts, rodzhersiya, dzheffersoniya, pechenochnitsa, sangvinariya, buzulnik and many others.

to live in a shadow, the wide, horizontally located leaves of dark shades of one plants diligently catch each ray of light; gentle, thinly rassechenny foliage of others, on the contrary, avoids any contact with the sun; other plants were fitted to leaf fall conditions, annually forming young kidneys over old, as if getting out of a layer of a forest laying. The tenelyuba which are near large trees do not develop deep root system and do not disturb neighbors. And many undersized types evergreen and perfectly winter under dense sheet “blanket“.

Similar plants we also collected

in the small nice companies under old women - apple-trees, having easily made of them beautiful flower compositions. As though the nature itself set them uniform style, allowing to adjoin harmoniously nearby with each other.

Each flower bed under a tree I conditionally call

the room. This term was remembered after reading of one European magazine in gardening. Really, the shady part of our garden represents “the multiroom apartment“ now for a big vegetable family where “rooms“ are divided by paths - corridors. There are also spacious “halls“ - lawns.

Specially a lawn we do not sow

, just regularly, once in two weeks, we mow everything that grows in our “halls“. Over time shade-loving cereals also formed a soft dense carpet. The fallen-down foliage is swept away on flower beds in the fall though it is recommended to rake up and burn or punch, as a rule, to get rid of the wintering wreckers. The thick sheet shelter helps plants in severe winters, and in the summer, pereprevy, it turns into nutritious humus therefore the earth under apple-trees as down. The fallen-down foliage and a lack of light yield one more unexpected result - the majority of weeds, and weedings, in comparison with solar sites is oppressed, are minimized.

However, some indisputable, apparently, pluses turned back considerable minus for our pets once. Long there was a heat, and the soil in shady flower beds began to dry up much quicker, than on open sites of a garden. Water when watering got through the friable soil as through sand, promptly reaching roots of trees, and was soaked up by them as the powerful pumps trying to rescue the huge, substituted the sun kroner from evaporation and not leaving almost at all to plants at the bottom of a tree. It was necessary to water, leaving on the earth a hose for hours and times shifting it. The benefit the shadow gave the chance to carry out watering and in the afternoon (watering in midday hours is harmful to the lit sites). Unfortunately, a lot of water merged on paths. Now partially it is possible to constrain moisture thanks to a dense vegetable border on borders of flower beds from bergenias, undersized a host, astilb, a geykher and kamnelomok. And where our dog often runs, instead of plants we placed the stones which overgrew mosses.

Contours of flower beds are initially planned by us in the form of a circle. But some plants (peltifilliuma, rodzhersiya, bergenias) expanded in different directions unevenly, forming picturesque curtains. Without wishing to limit their growth, it was necessary to change forms of flower beds on wrong, with ledges and smooth transitions. It brought a variety and illusion of a bigger scope a general view of a shady corner.

of Fear that in the spring flower beds under apple-trees from - for insufficient heat will late wake up and slowly to develop, were vain. Under neoblistvenny branches of the sun happens enough everything, even put between large plants - soliter to small families melkolukovichny (glory-of-the-snows, belotsvetnik, muskar and ornithogalums) which together with primroses emphasize originality of spring compositions.

A as our apple-trees began to yield a harvest smoothly, sometimes on two - three years in a row, we understood that they do not have harm from such neighbourhood.

the Idea of “shady“ flower beds was to the taste to

... to frogs: is where to hide during a heat or where to bury on wintering. By the way, frogs do not leave any chances to mosquitoes. Already many years in spite of the fact that in a garden the small flowing pond is dug, even in rainy weather to us the mosquito misfortune is unknown.

So should not be afraid of a twilight under branches of old apple-trees.
