Mechanisms of the choice, preparation and entering a higher education institution. Poll of seniors and their parents of

In most cases modern seniors approach the last call with the exact answer to a question what to do farther. And if many doubt the final choice of higher education institution till the last moment, then future specialty is almost always known in advance. So, every fourth school student is going to become “manager“. It is confirmed by data of survey conducted by the EXAMEN project of the Begin Group company among seniors and their parents at an exhibition “Alma Mater: the higher education for your child“ in September, 2005 and April, 2006 in Moscow. More than 300 seniors and their parents took part in research.

Most often families of seniors begin to choose by

higher education institution in 1 - 2 years until receipt. 48% of the interrogated parents of entrants note that the final decision concerning higher education institution was made for 2 years until receipt, another 31% - in a year.

the Vast majority of seniors go to several universities at the same time at once (69% of respondents), 19% plan to go at first to one university, and in case of failure - to another, and only 12% of respondents finally decided on the only educational institution to which they will file documents.

in case of failure at entrance examinations more than a half of entrants (56%) will try to enter to other university, 19% - on other faculty of the chosen higher education institution, 9% will repeat attempt in a year.

At the choice of higher education institution for parents of seniors prospects of further employment of the child are decisive factor. On the first place this factor was put by 40% of respondents. A third of parents and entrants first of all are guided at the choice by existence of the interesting specialties.

to prospects of further employment as a decisive factor, - Mihail Kneller, the project manager of EXAMEN of the Begin Group company notes. - And quite often they mean not so much the knowledge gained in higher education institution and necessary for this or that work, how many diploma value for employers, existence of the good center for employment, a possibility of passing the practician and training in leading companies. At the same time on the second place such, apparently, important factor as existence of these or those specialties departs. That is the specialty is chosen proceeding not from direct addictions of the child (if a favourite subject at school chemistry - I go to a department of chemistry), and situations in labor market.“

For 12% the decisive characteristic is training cost; the number of such respondents are slightly more, than in last years. It is connected with gradual reduction of a free set and the progressing differentiation of higher education institutions at training cost. Parents of entrants even more often are interested in the programs of financing of education supported by higher education institution.

Thus if on the place, the first on the importance, there are factors which are directly connected with the future of the entrant (prospect of employment, suitable specialty), on the second - focused on convenience of training (cost, complexity of entrance tests, location of higher education institution).

Recently, the importance of such factors as existence of military department (actually, there is not a lot of higher education institutions in which it remained), proximity to the residence decreases. On the contrary, the role of communications of higher education institution with foreign universities, and also dependence on quantity of the learned foreign languages increases.

Choosing higher education institution and specialty, entrants and their parents in many respects are guided by a certain public opinion concerning popularity and prestigiousness of these or those specialties. Also considerable role is played also by in what disciplines the entrant inquired in school.

Traditional interest in such professions as the financier and the manager, remains. The number of the entrants who are interested in career in area of information technologies and creative professions - architecture, design increases.

“Recently to entrants became less interesting the general wide business - specialties, such as “economist“ or universal “manager“, - Mihail Kneller notes. - Nevertheless, many school students choose something more concrete, like “PR and advertizing“, “finance and the credit“, “human resource management“. The specialty “law“ does not seem to seniors any more as attractive as earlier. Interest in creative professions grows. Technical specialties which several years were extremely unpopular gradually begin to gain weight - first of all connected with information technologies.

Usually maximum part in destiny of future student is taken by his mother - every seventh participant of the research conducted by the EXAMEN project of the Begin Group company within an exhibition “Alma Mater: the higher education for your child“, noted that her opinion was decisive at the choice of higher education institution.

Most of parents specify in poll that the decisive word remains for the entrant. At the same time in practice most often occurs so: in a consent with parents the main options for receipt (possible specialties, higher education institutions where these specialties teach) usually are defined.

entrants at the choice of higher education institution most often consult on both parents (54% of seniors), 24% - on mothers, 19% - on friends, 6% - on elder brothers or sisters.

Sources of information on higher education institutions

in the course of the choice of higher education institution of 59% of seniors and their parents look through the websites of higher education institutions on the Internet, and 31% visit the general help sites on higher education institutions, 32% do not use the Internet for search. At the same time quality of the website of higher education institution matters for 56% of respondents.

of 62% are regularly visited by educational exhibitions, 33% - visit one before the final choice of higher education institution (in this case it is necessary to consider that survey was conducted at an exhibition).

At visit of thematic exhibitions of 48% of respondents try to bypass the maximum number of stands, 50% are visited only by stands of a number of the higher education institutions interesting them and only 2% communicate only with representatives of one higher education institution to which they plan to come.

Tactics of preparation in higher education institution

that at school there will be not enough occupations for entering a higher education institution. 37% go to the university this year, 40% - in the following.

Thus, the vast majority of entrants prepare for receipt on courses. Among those who go to prestigious state universities their number reaches 95%, in such higher education institutions this almost obligatory (but insufficient) a receipt condition. At the same time training courses at non-state higher education institutions enjoy much smaller popularity. Most of entrants is engaged on courses in that higher education institution where they are going to arrive.

the smaller share of entrants addresses tutors. According to results of poll, 22% prepare for receipt with tutors, 18% plan to address tutors soon, and 23% consider that need for occupations with the tutor depends on the chosen higher education institution. 16% do not consider occupation with tutors necessary.

Also popularity of the educational credits grows, a number of banks grants the loans for the higher education on favorable terms.

How many parents are ready to pay in a year for training of the child in higher education institution?

Most of parents (59%) intend to finance training of the child by own means. 7% intend to take the credit for training, and 11% plan to use part own and part of borrowed funds. The others did not resolve for themselves this issue yet.

at the same time 52% are not ready to consider yet the possibility to take the educational credit, 43% note that they are ready to think of it and only 5% at the moment were already defined that will precisely take money for training on credit.

of 23% of parents consider the possibility of training of the child abroad. At the same time 14% would like that the child got abroad the first higher education, 50% would like to send the child abroad to the short term (a language course, training).
