Artists Vasnetsova`s brothers and their museums in Moscow

B the unusual wooden house with teremky in style of Old Russian architecture. The house was built by peasants of the Vladimir province for the famous artist Victor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov and his family according to sketches and drawings of the master. This project - a brilliant example of the neorussian style - it is art - asymmetric, decorative, with variety of volumes as romantic return to the past in architecture of Russia of the end of XIX - the beginnings of the XX century as reminiscence of the Russian old times.

Dolgaya Road to Moscow

Victor Vasnetsov grew up in a patriarchal family in the province where ancient customs remained.

He was born

on May 15, 1848 in the village of Lopyal, Urzhumsky of the county, the Vyatka province. Its childhood passed in the village of Ryabovo. The father is the rural priest who had six sons, itself was a person very versatile, was fond of many natural sciences, well drew. In a family there was a telescope, and boys since the childhood could learn the star world. Two of sons, Victor and Appolinary, became the famous artists subsequently.

already in Ryabovo, but to study went to spiritual school in Vyatka, and later in a theological seminary (1858 - 1867). The theological seminary in Vyatka was high-digit educational institution where Vasnetsov studied the annalistic arches, chronographs, life of Saints, parables. Old Russian literature, its poetics also directed interest of future artist in the Russian old times.“ I always only Russia also lived“, - the artist remembered later. From seminary Vasnetsov took out profound knowledge of difficult orthodox symbolics which used then in monumental painting, in the temple lists.

In August, 1867 from blessing of the father seminary in one and a half years prior to its termination and with the money gained from a lottery went in St. Petersburg to come to Academy of Arts. Here he communicated with such celebrities as the critic V. Stasov, artists I. Kramskoy and I. Repin.

of Professor P. Chistyakov, P. Basin, V. Vereshchagin were his teachers. Soon he becomes the participant of exhibitions of artists - the peredvizhniki working in the genre painting displaying life of urban poor (“From the apartment on the apartment“, “Caught the pilferer“, “Book-store“ etc.) .

, and only in 1878 he forever moves to Moscow where in 1894 he builds the own house, having lived in it until the end of life. Here, in the ancient capital of Russia also nature of his creativity changes. On its cloths poetic images from the Russian fairy tales, from the heroic epos of Old Russian literature appear: “Flying carpet“, “After Igor Svyatoslavovich`s slaughter with Cumans“ (1880), “Tsar Ivan the Terrible“ (1897), “Athletes“ (1898) . The last are written in a workshop of his house. Several pictures of such genre were executed by it at the request of Savva Mamontov in whose Abramtsevsky circle it gained skills of the architect, having designed church, the muralist, having executed a frieze “Stone Age“, the theatrical artist, having issued several performances of theater of Mamontov.

Should note also its remarkable lists of Vladimirsky Cathedral in Kiev. He died in 1926, having left considerable heritage: about two hundred pictures and several thousands of fine sketches. Its best works took the worthy place in the Tretyakov gallery.

Family traditions

the Circle to Abramtzevo was visited also by the younger brother of Victor - Appolinary who went on his feet, having become the artist. He was 8 years younger and, unlike Victor, did not study in Academy of Arts. But its abilities to drawing were noticed in a family, and Victor insisted on private occupations with the artist - Italian Elviro Andriolli living in Vyatka where the boy studied in spiritual school. Then there was a real school and work as the teacher in the village of Bystritsa near Vyatka.

In three years it together with the brother goes to Moscow and at once joins in public life of the ancient capital.

Appolinary was not less gifted, than his famous brother, with a broad outlook. The artist and the writer, he is fond of archeology, astronomy, seriously goes in for history which he addresses in the pictures, drawing the ancient cities (“At walls of the ancient city“, 1907), old Moscow (“Red Square in the second half of the 17th century“, 1925) the Moscow Kremlin in different centuries etc., many of which decorate the historical museums of Russia.

the Abramtsevsky circle, new acquaintances to great artists played an enormous role in its destiny. He, as well as the brother, participates in many art exhibitions, subsequently teaches already as the academician of painting in the Moscow school of painting of sculpture and architecture, travels around Russia and abroad much. To 50 - to summer anniversary its art heritage made 350 pictures and 1000 sketches. Some of them are in a constant exposition of the Memorial museum - apartments Apollinariya Vasnetsova where it lived the last 30 years (the house No. 6 on Furmanny Lane). He died in 1933, the museum works since 1965.

As was remembered by Fedor Shalyapin:“ Along walls (in Victor`s house) there were oak, simple benches, in the middle there was an oak, strong put simple table without cloth and which - where thickset stools were placed“. All walls indoors originally were timbered, as in a country log hut. On the second floor in Victor`s house there was a big workshop.

This simple furniture decorated with a wooden carving was executed according to sketches of the owner by abramtsevsky and Vyatka joiners - carvers under supervision of the brother Arkady Vasnetsov.


In the same style made furniture, in particular, cases and buffets in the apartment Apollinariya which used in their finishing not only the Russian ornament and metal slips, as on ancient chests, but also the mica inserted into windows instead of glasses as in Ancient Russia. Apollinariya the Moscow handicraft workshops were performers of these really art copies of furniture for.

All internal interiors of both museums are kept by
