How on September 1 began to celebrate Knowledge Day?

Agree the developed tradition long ago, in the very first autumn day celebrate the International Knowledge Day. The first of September is a special day which is associated with snow-white bows and lacy fartuchka at girls, the strict, ideally smoothed out suits at boys, a boundless sea of flowers and a ring of the hand bell foretelling travel on the fascinating world of knowledge... With what everything began

in an extreme antiquity people treated

with huge respect by first day of September. In the IV century of our era, namely in 325, the ancient Roman emperor Constantine the Great, having celebrated the victory over Maksentsy and having achieved domination of Christian religion, on the very first Ecumenical council in the world made the decision on establishment of date on September 1 to start new year.

Nine centuries of the first of September later became the official beginning of new year and in orthodox Russia. In 1492 the tsar John III issued the decree according to which an appointment of new year was rescheduled since spring for the fall. Because in days of old all schools were at churches, the beginning of study coincided from the beginning of new church year.

For September 1 in Russia several significant events - New year, the beginning of study, taxation, and also solemn representation of the imperial successor to the people dropped out at once...

However so proceeded rather not for long. To be closer to Europe and the western traditions, the sovereign Peter I in 1699 issued the decree in which he disposed to note the beginning of new year since January 1.

What concerned the beginning of training, here everything was ambiguous. The schedule of work of prestigious school and gymnasiums at which children from rich families studied easily changed depending on wishes of parents. Thus, study could begin in any month when it was more convenient. And here for country children everything remained still. Up to an early autumn they helped the parents to perform all agricultural works in this connection at them no opportunity to go to school earlier was simple. So it is the most convenient to begin academic year was only after all crop is reaped!

From the USSR up to now

B 1935 the first day of September became official start date of academic year. It was connected with the fact that economic and agricultural interests of society moved to the forefront. Motives by which high persons of the state were guided were extremely practical: thanks to the beginning of study in the first days of fall by May young specialists - just to the opening of a season of field works were issued. This innovation equally pleased both rural inhabitants, and residents of the cities.

And here in the festive, as they say, red afternoon of a calendar, on September 1 became later nearly half a century. Knowledge Day was officially founded by the Supreme Council of the USSR only in 1984. Since then already there passed many years, there was a set of changes, but the nice and good tradition of celebration of Knowledge Day remained to this day.

And how in other countries?

In spite of the fact that on September 1 call in the International Afternoon, in some countries determined other start dates of academic year.

So, for example, in Germany, Spain, Poland and some other West - the European countries children go to school in the first day of October. The Korean and Brazilian pupils begin “to grind away at the studies“ since March 1, and Japanese - since April 1. India starts study in the very first day of summer. And France was the most free in this regard - here the fixed date to start academic year just does not exist!
