How to get to sanatorium under the clepsydra? The surrealism at cinema ofthe Clepsydra is not the geographical place like the savanna or the tundra. So called a water-clock in Ancient Greece. Such tool for measurement of time is known with vremenen to the Babylon and Egyptian civilization. Vessels with the following streams of water were used as hours till the 18th century. The writer and artist Bruno Schultz also placed the sanatorium in this vessel for measurement of time, and later according to his book the director Wojciech Has shot one of the most surreal movies in the history of cinema.
the Movie sometimes are incorrectly translated as “Sanatorium under hourglasses“, but by hours, the clepsydra, water. The plot is devoted to the father of the main character who is in mysterious sanatorium where time passes absolutely in a different way. Behind institution walls the old man is already dead, but here is still living, though is in a dream. As the director of sanatorium, doctor Gotar explains, by means of a dream it is possible to keep patients in the past where they did not reach the death moment yet.
The beginning of the movie shows a certain strange train with sleepy passengers. At the next moment Josef (so call the protagonist) makes the way through the thrown and snow-covered garden to an old decayed mansion. Such occur practically in any horror film now. Empty corridors, a web, cracks in a floor and walls of sanatorium, the locked rooms. Strange doctor Gotar who meets Josef whether as guest, whether as patient. Further everything finally gets confused: the hero plunges into the childhood, meets himself in the form of the child, with Otto von Bismarck, the first chancellor of the German empire at the same time (that “the iron chancellor“).
All these events mix up and turn into absurd surrealistic porridge which the modern viewer and the reader who got used to “Transformers“ and Dontsova, hardly also will be able to chew. It not charge, I here personally up to the end could not master history. But solved the main riddle of work (both the book, and the movie). On the Internet do not love spoilers, but a plot entirely I and I will not cut out. Just if to understand what is this “sanatorium“ which is thought up by Bruno Shults and embodied on a film by Wojciech Has, then to realize magnificent work of the writer and Polish director it will become much simpler.
“Sanatorium under the clepsydra“ are our memoirs. Only there are live close people who died the physical death for others. Only there it is possible to move to the past (and only to the past because at memory a present and the future is absent). And the main character of the novel (and the movie) travels not to realities, and in the memory of the died father. The director visually described the abstract concept “reminiscence“ as Kafka embodied an image of abstract state bureaucracy in novels “Sentence“ and “Lock“.
It is a little about the author of the collection of the stories which became a movie basis, Bruno Schultz. He is called the Polish Kafka. Really, this Polish Jew, all life lived in one city (Drogobych), wrote very unusual stories filled with mysticism and surrealism. Painting was the second talent of Bruno. He perfectly drew, and it for a while saved to him life during occupation of Poland by nazis in 1941.
Felix Landau, the officer of CC, took Schultz to paint to themselves rooms in a casino of Gestapo and still a number of rooms (in particular, in the nursery). It would seem, everything not bad develops, but the sharfyurer Karl Gunter who did not divide something with Landau once and decided to salt something to that served in the same department of CC.
On November 19, 1942 Gunter saw Schultz going down the street, shouted to him: “Turn away!“, and shot to it at a nape twice.
On the same day happy Gunter told Landau:
- Today shot your artist.
- Is a pity, - Felix answered. - It was necessary to me.
- Therefore shot.
The death of the talented writer and artist looks as Kafka`s history now - whether the tragedy, whether very black comedy. After war Landau and Gunter were sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes. And Bruno Schultz remains live by means of the “sanatorium under the clepsydra“.
