What has to be education in the future?

It is known that always describe textbooks day before yesterday day. And how to be with today? A strange question for the person knowing that on the Internet it is possible to find the answer to any question. But to receive the answer to a question, it needs to be set skillfully. And probably presently it is the most important that should study. Earlier the education system was directed to

to giving to the young man a certain volume of knowledge. This volume of knowledge lasted for a long time, much - for the rest of life. But now information volume repeatedly increased in the world. To push all this information in the unfortunate head there is no opportunity. And there is no requirement such because modern information very quickly changes. And here requirement to orient quickly in the sea of information, to find the correct reference points and to float safely in the necessary party, remained and began to be appreciated very expensively.

Indian scientific of Sugat Mitr (Sugata Mitra) it is known for the researches in the field of quantum organic chemistry and computer networks. In recent years it deals with problems of education which are very essential to such huge country as India where a large number of the poor and illiterate population lives. At the same time for a long time it became clear that the former education system (very good system constructed at the time of the British Empire) glitches from - for the fact that in the country there are not enough teachers, and they especially are not enough where they are most of all necessary - in the poorest and started regions of the country.

Sugata Mitra asked a question: and maybe, so many teachers are also not required if to call to the aid the Internet? He found out that children if to set the task for them and to interest in achievement of result, are very quickly trained in work with computers, well learn English and begin to obtain without effort information from the Internet.

In 1999 Sugat Mitr was put by the first experiment in the field of children`s education which he called “A hole in a wall“ (“Hole in the Wall“). In one of the trushchobny districts of Delhi in a wall of the building the stand with the computer, the screen, a mouse and the keyboard was placed. Local children could use this device freely. Nobody explained anything to children. The teacher was absent.

It turned out that regardless of the one who are they and where they live, children can be trained effortlessly in work with the computer and the Internet even without knowledge of English. The essential moment was communication in group here. As a result of this communication children trained each other. They quickly mastered necessary for work English on the Internet and, the most important, learned to ask questions to search engines and to draw the correct conclusions on the basis of replies of search engines.

Many of these children of slums improved the English thanks to simple game. They received the computer with the free program entering the Windows operating system which transformed the delivered speech to the printing text. Children told about something to the computer, and it gave some abracadabra on the screen. “He does not understand us!“ - children were indignant. Mitra`s answer was simple. “I leave you the computer for two months. Make so that he understood you“ - “But how?“ - “I do not know!“

In two months children talked almost in ideal English. And they learned it independently. Many of them got then a job in the center of maintenance where all day it is necessary to speak good English with clients from all countries of the world.

Sugata Mitra`s experiments showed that if the child has an interest, then training surely begins. Training, according to Mitra, happens in group of the same interested children. Training in collective is a self-organized system. As any self-organized system, it behaves is unpredictable, and the result is in many respects casual.

Here - that the role of the teacher in new process of training also became clear. Process - that new, but the teacher, as before, was important and necessary. However the role of teachers seriously changed. They should not have faced a class, prophetic truth which was required to be learned by heart, and were as if aside, controlling collaboration of group and setting immediate tasks.

By the way, one of important tasks of teachers consisted in praising pupils. To praise everyone for its contribution to the common cause, training process. At the same time the teacher could be absolutely in other place, is very far from the wards.

Mitr was organized from the English pensioners by group of so-called “cloudy grandmothers“. Grandmothers have in general a wide experience of tender communication with children. Exactly thanks to the caress and patience they are the most unostentatious teachers of future generation. And the English grandmothers besides - awfully active. Sugata Mitra easily recruited from them 200 assistants. In two years by means of Skype they spent 600 hours of lessons with groups of the Indian children. Also tremendous results were achieved. Kids from the deaf and poor Indian province took tests with rather good result which provided them receipt in good universities and further advance in life.
