Whether there could be China Christian?Attempts to extend faith in Jesus Christ in China were made several times and at different times. It is considered to be that here the first Christian missionaries appeared only at the beginning of the 17th century, but it appears - on one thousand years earlier.
First and the major confirmation to this surprising opening - the stone wall 2 meters high found in 1625 near Chanyanya (Xian) on which 1789 words are cut out. Words are placed in 82 - x lines and narrate about Christian mission in China in the 7-8th centuries AD
Of course, first it seemed improbable. Knowing China a little, to be exact - without knowing it at all, Europeans could not believe in it. Considered as fraud. Only in 1826 careful research proved authenticity of a wall. The monument received the name of the Chanyansky stele and was dated 779 - 781.
According to the text on a stele, the Christianity captured big spaces in China where the emperor Tye - Zong at that time ruled. And the person who began to preach faith in Christ in this ancient country was called Olopen. U L. N. Gumileva it - Alopyan. Or perhaps in general Abraham? The close translation is still unknown. It is considered that this preacher arrived to Celestial Empire from Syria.
Christian mission, strangely enough, achieved in China of huge successes. Though, on the other side of, maybe, nothing strange in it is also not present. The emperor Tye - Zong (Tan`s dynasty) pursued toleration policy, and there are even data that Olopenya in China waited. Why not to assume that the preacher was invited in general. Probably, the governor had a good reason hospitably to treat Christian mission. And differently as others religion in the country with centuries-old foundations still could extend? Only with the highest permission.
Olopenya provided a freedom of action, supplied with all possible written permissions and even distances of assistants. Mission was successful, nobody repaired obstacles. In general, if to look at Christianity history, then it is possible to note that in few places this religion was accepted as quietly, as in China. Without hostility, disputes and bloodshed. It was relied not on a power method, and on interest of Chinese in all new. And they became interested.
Churches were constructed, even translated the Scripture into Chinese. It was not the close, dry translation, and it is rather, the free statement adapted under the Chinese ethics, and this work received Sutr (Kanon) Jesus`s name - the Messiahs. The emphasis was placed on service to God, emperor and parents. The power of the emperor in China was sacred and indisputable, and parents - are deeply esteemed by children until the end of life. Devotion to a family and in modern China - important feature of mentality of this country with ancient history. In this plan there nothing changed. Only there are no emperors now. And toleration is present.
The Christianity in China two hundred years, but not in orthodox, and in a nestoriansky form prospered. It was called Jing - Jiao. Later the well-known stele will be named Nestorianska. Researchers consider that the Nestorianism got to Celestial Empire on the Great silk way from Syria. The fact that Olopen arrived from there is based only that the text on a stele is made in Syriac. However the Japanese scientists assume that the text is written on Persian, or perhaps and in the Sughd language. Perhaps, the preacher of Nestorianism in China is not the Syrian, but the Persian at all. There is still a version that he is the Roman priest.
Blossoming of Christianity in China falls on 840. The number of believers reached 260 thousand people among whom there were also many high-ranking persons. During government of the emperor Gao - Zun nestoriansky churches arose across all China. Even four dioceses - in Datong, in Beijing, in Chzhanye and in Kashgar were founded.
But during government of the woman, only in the history of China, - the emperor At - Howe, Gao`s spouses - Zun who was usurping the power at it and based a new dynasty, the Nestorianism suffered persecution. Having hardly begun, the hristianization of China, in fact, ended with falling of a dynasty of Tan. This another proof of the fact that nothing in Celestial Empire occurred without consent of the emperor and ruling elite. Nestorians lost high protection.
Finally the Christianity in this country did not get accustomed, despite support of emperors Xuan - Zun and Su - Zun. Christians began to be pursued. Even at the emperor Dao - Zong during whose government the well-known monument - the Nestoriansky stele as the direct proof of goodwill of the imperial power to christian teaching was erected. Whether the joke to immortalize Christian mission where there is, rather ancient religion? It is not just toleration, and shy attempts to use new religion in political goals. Tens of thousands of Chinese adopted Christianity. And quite voluntarily.
The government of the emperor At - Zong (9th century) who published several edikt directed to abolition of any “others“ religion became the real blow for Nestorianism in China. Monasteries which there were at that time more than five thousand all were almost closed, and monks and nuns forced to return to a social life.
In the next centuries Christian missionaries, anyway, tried to take root into Celestial Empire. It were Catholic preachers (Franciscans in the 13th century, Jesuits - in the 16th century) there were also Orthodox Christians (them the Russian emperor Peter I directed with mission). But all of them already met active counteraction from ruling elite. The empress Ci Xi correcting China almost all second half of the 19th century was especially hostilely ready to Christians. It turns out that the Christianity in all the most widespread directions was tried to be approved at different times in China. But unsuccessfully.
By the time of revolutionary movements at the beginning of the 20th century in China the Christianity was misunderstood already absolutely there. The religion was estimated only from a position: it is useful or not, it is necessary to us or not. Here and christian teaching was considered only as possible means of unity of masses in liberating fight. One of future founders of communism, Chen Du Xiu, declared Jesus Christ an example of self-sacrifice. And at the same time he declared that all religions are absolutely useless.
Today in the People`s Republic of China there are both orthodox, and Catholic churches with which activity nobody interferes, and the number of Christians among the population reaches 130 million people.
