Where executed Saint Philip?of Martiry Svyatogo Philipp - the temple on the place of martyrdom of one of followers of Jesus Christ who was built in the city of Hierapolis belonging in the ancient time to the Great Roman Empire and being today in the territory of modern Turkey. Exactly here in the 87th year Saint Philip the Apostle was AD crucified for belief. Very few people from the travelers who visited Hierapolis tell
about this place. And not because this temple is not of a particular interest. The reason is that it is located away from a traditional route of acquaintance to the city and very few people get there. At the same time the place of death of Saint Philip is especially esteemed in all Christian world and in day of his memory (on May 3 for Catholic church and on November 27 for Orthodox) pilgrims are flown down here to honor its lifetime acts.
I, in turn, got there absolutely incidentally, one may say, on combination of circumstances. Receding from a subject, at once I will tell: if you go to Pamukkale with organized one-day excursion, be ready that you will not manage to look at the most part of objects owing to a lack of time all the same in spite of the fact that everything is located rather compactly. Or bathing in Cleopatra`s pool, on travertines and survey of an amphitheater as it was in our case, or visit of the city of Hierapolis and the biggest necropolis in the Roman Empire. Place accents at once, depending on preferences and interests.
And so after already long enough were in the territory of Pamukkale, we managed to indulge only ourselves with mineral bathtubs and to examine the Roman theater. Our guide after formal introductory lecture in general somewhere disappeared, having designated only time when our group had to sit in the bus already.
Air temperature, of course, was terrifying... After we learned that this day was the hottest in a season. The wife, having examined the Roman theater, flatly refused to go where - or further and to leave the place in a shadow on a shop. Therefore I had to move ahead further to one. Having inspected nearby vicinities, I saw some structures on a hillock and decided to go there. Understanding that it was the place of execution of Saint Philip to me came much later for now I “sure“ gait went in the set direction.
It is considered that the word of martiriya happened from Greek - martys, i.e. the witness. In our case the witness of death of Saints, the temple on the place of death.
Martiry Svyatogo Philipp was on a height, as well as it befits the temple built in memory fallen for belief. But that to it to rise, at first it was necessary to come downstairs in a ravine, and then to rise already upward. Before a ladder my attention was drawn by a sarcophagus with the broken-away cover and inscriptions in Latin on walls. Only I and my desire to rise upward became frightening, especially, around nobody.
Having examined a sarcophagus and having drawn conclusions that my knowledge of Latin which I learned at university, were small, I went on a ladder. “Directly some Golgotha“, - I thought, rising. Perhaps, on this ladder or the road which was here earlier, conducted Saint Philip to death. Anyway and my ascension was symbolical. I as if passed all way from life to truth, I understand a way from a sin to great the mission on this earth...
Having risen upward, I looked back, more precisely down. The short road was the road to the place where tormently and blood the religion which subdued minds 2/3 mankind on the earth arose.
I was overflowed by curiosity, and, having fluently examined the temple from outside, I entered inside. Inside - it, of course, is strongly told. Walls and columns - all this that remained from the temple built in the 5th century AD. Having centric planning at the heart of which there was a cross, martiry it was built according to Christian canons. On many walls and arches it was possible to find Christian symbolics.
Tradition to build martiriya on the place of death of martyrs arose just during an early Christian era during formation of “young“ religion. Also Saint Philip the Apostle whose contribution to distribution of Christianity is big and immense did not become an exception. I will tell more, Philip preached some time in Scythia - in the territory of modern northern Black Sea Coast, i.e. in the our country. Symbolically!
Being on the place of death of Saint Philip, in a martiriya, I did not stop thinking what forced people to die for belief, for Christ? What forced them to go on a cross and to give the most expensive - life? I long could not find the answer, and then understood everything. Dying, they left behind belief, belief which just like that it is impossible neither to crucify, nor to wipe out. And that this belief always was near us, Christians built temples and rotundas in glory of the dead.
Having bypassed martiriya on perimeter, having glanced in each corner, I went back. Having gone down, I turned back, having once again looked round around. The road to the place of execution of Saint Philip and a situation excited heart...
