International Olympic Day. The Olympic Games are a sport or policy?
the International Olympic Day is celebrated on June 23. This day in 1894 according to the proposal of the French public figure Pierre de Coubertin the Olympic Games were revived.
the set of legends of an origin of the Olympic Games Exists. Usually historians reckon of 776 B.C. The Ancient Greek states constantly were at war. And here governors agreed among themselves that at least once in 4 years “to have a rest“ from wars: to arrange sports meets.
Games began to be played in the sacred town Olympia (Elid`s state). For carrying out Games any military operations were forbidden. And all - this rule was sometimes violated. It means that policy above all. And, unfortunately, this postulate for some politicians works, to this day.
Antique Games did not differ in a sports variety. Generally competitions took place by the following types: run on different distances, fisticuffs, fight, discus throw, races of chariots. To women on pain of the death penalty it was forbidden not only to participate, but also to be present at Games.
Olympic champions won symbolical prizes: they were handed a palm branch and awarded with an olive wreath. But upon return to himself home such winner became “demigod“ and received many privileges. In antique times honor and respect it was put above material benefits.
The policy was present at Games at the veiled look. After a gain of the Greek states in the second century B.C. Rome, the policy began to look through more and stronger. For example, Neron became “winner“ in chariots races only because nobody dared to compete with the powerful governor.
The Roman power brought blood-thirsty elements (fights of gladiators, fights with wild animals) in the Olympic Games, having turned Games into commercially spectacular actions. The emperor Feodosiy, fighting against pagan manifestations, in 394 AD forbade the Olympic Games.
As a result of desolation, and also the fires and floods, Olympia stopped the existence. Only in 14 centuries archeologists dug out this ancient town. And after these events in society talk on revival of the Olympic Games went. All this developed into formation of the International Olympic Committee. This epoch-making event happened on June 23, 1894 in the Parisian Sorbonne. It is curious that not Pierre de Coubertin, but the Greek writer D. Vikelas became the First President of the IOC.
On the congress decided that the First Olympic Games will take place in 1896 in Athens. And here the first political crisis burst at once. The prime minister - the minister of Greece declared that there is no money for carrying out Games. The king of Greece decides that the prestige is more important, than money, and gives a green light to carrying out Games. Thus the modern political situation in the world is outlined: The Olympic Games are necessary for prestige.
In brackets we will notice that Olympic Games which paid off - units. Governors of the majority of the countries are guided by prestigiousness of the Olympic Games, even in damage of the economy. Perhaps, an exception are the Olympic Games which were taking place in 1996 in Atlanta. These Olympic Games are considered as the worst in the history. Here Big Business crushed under itself sport.
The first modern Olympic Games started on April 6, 1896. Took part 241 athletes from 14 countries in them. For comparison: in 2004 more than 11 thousand athletes already participated in the same Athens.
The Olympic symbolics, well-known now, appeared gradually. In 1913 the flag with the image on it five bound rings which symbolized unity of five parts of the world was offered, emphasizing the world character of the Olympic Games. Politicians showed it on “business“, having launched World War I.
The official Olympic motto “Quicker, Above, More Strongly“ - is known to much. But there is also informal: “The main thing - not a victory, but participation“. Many modern athletes perceive this outdated slogan with irony. Now winners win not symbolical prizes.
In pre-war time played political “games“ too. In 1920 the “democratic“ countries did not allow the Soviet Russia on the Olympic Games. Still the political resonance caused the fact when Hitler at the Olympic Games which were taking place in Berlin did not shake hands with the black champion.
In 1952 to the Big sports arena there was an Olympic team of the USSR. And the Olympic Games began to get bright political coloring. Hidden sports opposition of two great powers began: USA and USSR. Now began to compete not only by the number of rockets, but also by quantity of the won medals. Sport began to submit to the state interests completely. There was a new unofficial political slogan: “Prestige, ponderability, authority“.
Athletes usual trainings could not achieve any more solid results and therefore the pharmacological era began to come. For the states the prestige in the form of a large number of medals was required, and for athletes it was the only chance to find material welfare.
The political peak of opposition fell on 1980. The U.S. Government for the far-fetched reasons arranged boycott to the Olympic Games in Moscow. And in 1984 the government of the USSR was forced to strike back, having boycotted the Olympic Games in Los - Andzheles. The last years to a proscenium of Big-time sports there was China. So, the Big-time politics will be present still latently and to operate sports community.
Throughout all Olympic Games of the politician closely intertwined with Games. Sometimes it occurred latentno, and happened that the Policy loudly declared itself. And for many ordinary fans of sport the Olympic Games are just interesting gripping show where everyone sincerely supports the team.
With the International Olympic day!
