Chauchat Mle 1915 C. S. R. G., or just “Shosh“. What was the weapon, “winning fame the shortcomings“?

called it the worst individual weapon of the twentieth century, “the weapon winning fame not the advantages, but the shortcomings“. “This machine gun became one of the first manual machine guns of the beginning of the 20th century. Still this machine gun was one of the worst machine guns of the 20th century“. Wikipedia. Though in the same France Gochkis`s machine gun, more perfect and already started in production was already taken advantage, France, as always went the way.

Initially the weapon was created as an autoloading rifle just as an easy machine gun approximately the same time of Browning the BAR 1918. The task is set simple - to create an easy automatic rifle under a standard cartridge of the French rifle of Lebel. The inventor of this unusual weapon, the citizen of Switzerland and the Hungarian on a nationality Rudolf Frommer, even submitted the application for reception of the similar weapon to the Swiss army, but after all put tests was refused reception. Then Frommer addressed the French government which took idea of the easy automatic weapon on further completion.

He received the ridiculous name “Shosha“ by last name the person who controlled his creation - the French colonel of Clianchat (Shosh), the chairman of committee on creation of an automatic rifle. The weapon is constructed according to the scheme with the long course of a trunk, to similarly automatic gun of the Browning (Browning Auto - 5). The designer Syuter and the technologist Ribeyrol helped to realize idea. The weapon at plants of Gladiator firm (Usines Gladiator) which undertook commercial risk of release of the new weapon was issued. From here also four letters in the name of a machine gun appeared. C. S. R. G. - Clianchat (the author of idea and the project manager), Snlerre (kostruktor), Ribeyrolle (technologist), Gladiator (firm - producer). One person could transfer the weapon easily.

Appearance of the weapon is so original that it cannot just be confused with anything. Very long pipe - a receiver, a bulky box with the trigger mechanism under this pipe, semicircular shop below, the thin bipods which are sticking out forward … Wooden handles in number of 2 pieces and very short wooden butt.

The advantage of a machine gun was small weight - less than 10 kg with the equipped shop. Low rate of firing (240 vystr / min.) and the mode of single fire allowed to squander cartridges not strongly. The machine gun just had no more than the advantages. However war dictated the terms. Without having passed all put tests, “Shosh“ it was sent to troops. And, already a year later, in 1916 - mass withdrawal of a machine gun from troops began m. Too little this weapon had advantages also too many shortcomings.

And here to French has strongly luck! But about it is slightly lower … Automatic equipment of a machine gun is constructed by

according to the scheme with the long course of a trunk. It means that when firing the trunk moves backwards - forward one length more, than the boss`s length. At the same time, that the trunk was cooled, on it put cross fins from steel plates and conclude all this design with two returnable springs in a long pipe. And if dust or dirt got to this pipe, and in the conditions of trench war it precisely got, “klinit“ a machine gun. The weapon at which when firing more than 3 “went“ - x kg of mobile parts, had a mediocre shooting accuracy too. Strongly mediocre.

It is yet not biggest “jamb“ of a machine gun. The shop of an original semicircular design is made so that the last cartridges can enter a cartridge chamber back to front, and the special mechanism for determination of correctness of provision of a cartridge and … its revolution in case of the wrong situation is required. If still to add that the spring in shop often burst … Moreover, for reduction of weight in shop “windows“ were done, and through these square holes trench dirt constantly got to a receiver.

But there is more to come! The machine gun of “Shosh“ became famous for the fact that when firing arrows could lose parts of this weapon. The receiver and a casing are mounted on the special basis a metal skeleton. These parts connected only one screw! During firing this screw gradually got out and was often lost. Further firing became impossible …

However as it was mentioned above, French were strongly helped by personal disagreements of the director of the department of arms of the American army the general William Krozi with the English colonel and the industrialist Isaak Lewis. And here, “to salt“ to British, instead of the reliable and well proved English manual machine guns of system of Lewis were purchased French “Shosha“. Moreover in what quantity - 35 229 pieces!

Further 19 000 more machine guns remade under the American rifle cartridge were purchased. 30 - 06 Springfield with direct shop on 16 cartridges, a half of which was returned on firm within half a year! At the same time the commander of the American case in Europe steadily specified in reports on reliability of this weapon! After Americans machine guns of “Shosh“ began to buy also other armies of the world. Belgium, Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland, Greece...

Bought the similar weapon and the Russian Empire. “Simplification reached excessive shortening of a trunk (its length was less, than at the Russian carbine) … the gun - Shosh`s machine gun, belonging to systems of the automatic weapon with the long kickback which is considered now already outdated cannot be quite perfect sample“, - the Russian colonel Fedorov wrote. Source: Military Review magazine. Thank God, the Russian Empire was passed by a fate of the American machine gunners.

All machine guns of “Shosh“ more than 225 000 pieces were let out. Despite the served very numerous shortcomings, an easy and maneuverable machine gun not only on fronts of World War I, but also World War II, and in the French colonies and in Vietnam it was applied up to 60 - x years 20 - go centuries. Quite good for the weapon which “won fame not the advantages, but the shortcomings“.
