Yevgeny Yevtushenko. What to be a classic during lifetime? If the scientific term “citing coefficient“ to applyto present poetry, on the first place, undoubtedly, there will be E. Yevtushenko - the most popular poet of the second half 20 - go centuries. However say that the author recognized as contemporaries only “candidate“ in classics, and there supposedly will show life. Well, in that case I propose the candidate of the favourite poet for a role of the classic.
“Glorified not according to the program and eternal out of schools and systems, it is not made by hands and is not imposed to us by anybody“. B. Pasternak “Wind“.
It is written about Blok, but is, probably, the general poetic formula which characterizes a way of the artist to reputation of the classic which is created spontaneously, according to opinions and interests of the general reading public, but not according to someone`s instructions. That that Stalin in 1935. proclaimed Mayakovsky “the best, most talented poet of the Soviet era“ and awarded an award of a name of?
Idols of the time are not always classics: so at Pushkin considered as classics and predicted eternal glory to the journalist and the writer F. Bulgarin and the author of “nravoopisatelny“ novels P. Boborykin, and at Chekhov - to the playwright I. Potapenko. Now their names and creativity are familiar only to experts - literary critics.
To the contrary, in the history blindness cases in relation to that art which is proclaimed then great often meet. So after centuries of oblivion only in the 19th century found a rebirth of Botticelli. Interest in Bach`s music arose almost in a centuries after death of the great composer. And not to consider such examples.
“When the poet is living, to understand that he is a classic, only the few can. To understand how he is talented, it is necessary to present him to the dead“, - Ge. Renard bitterly joked.
E. A. Yevtushenko should not die that all understood that he is a great poet. Twenty poems, stories and novels, memoirs, journalism, more than 50 songs, many of which are considered national, film scripts, work of the director and actor - all this speaks about him as about the prolific author and the tireless toiler. But, of course, the most important is its verses. In 60 years (since 1953) there were nearly 50 collections! And how many he carried out poetic concerts, having restored Mayakovsky`s tradition to address general public!
According to the American journalist M. Buzukashvili, two the most impressive, the strongest on influence of the poem 20 - go centuries - “If“ (1910) of R. Kipling and “Babi Yar“ (1961) E. Yevtushenko.
... Being a student of Litinstitut, Yevtushenko was directed to practice in the factory newspaper on Kakhovsky hydroelectric power station under construction. Here he got acquainted with the writer - Kiev resident Anatoly Kuznetsov who undertook to show it Babi Yar - a huge ravine more than 2 km long and up to 50 m in depth, the place of mass executions in 1941. Here fascists ruined more than 150 thousand people, generally civilian population - Jews, Roma, and also prisoners of war.
Yevtushenko was shocked, without having found on the place of death of people even of a small memorable sign. Besides, all Babi Yar was turned by the city authorities into a huge dump. This night that poem which broke through plot of silence around Babi Yar and events of the Holocaust was also written.
All silently here shouts, and, having taken off a cap, I feel
Ya how slowly I turn gray.
I I, as continuous silent shout,
over thousands of thousands buried.
Ya - everyone here the shot old man.
Ya - everyone here the shot child. Nothing in me about it will forget
... There is no Jewish blood in my blood.
But is hated rage of hardened
I to all anti-semites as the Jew,
And therefore - I am the real Russian!
- poets the poem made strong impression On friends, but they unanimously declared that any newspaper will not print it. Having taken courage, Yevtushenko incurred it to the editor of “The literary newspaper“ V. A. Kosolapov. It, the former veteran, was considered as the person honest and courageous - not without reason expressing discontent “Literaturka“ was written out by almost all Soviet intellectuals.
Kosolapov read “Babi Yar“ and told the young poet: “Thanks for fine verses. But that to print them, I have to consult to the wife, it has to be the family decision“. “But why?“ - that was surprised. The answer was short: “Because I will be dismissed“.
Really, soon there arrived Kosolapov`s wife and for half an hour was locked with the husband in an office. When it left, her eyes were zaplakana, but, having approached the poet exhausted with expectation, stroked it on the head and told: “Do not worry, Zhenechka, everything will be as it should be. We decided to be dismissed“.
Appeared in “Literaturka“ “Babi Yar“ made effect of the become torn bomb. I still remember the stunned faces of my parents - it cannot be because can never be! In a week the poem was translated into 72 languages and published in all leading newspapers of the world. Addressed to the poet bags of letters came with words of support, and it is frequent also with threats. Students of the Moscow university established continuous protection at Yevtushenko`s house. “The poet in Russia is more, than the poet“ - this phrase he predicted to himself destiny.
Yevtushenko was lucky - he got more “vegetarian“ time. Though carriers of liberal ideas also admitted threat for the state, scales were already incomparable: at Stalin lost life, at Khrushchev and Brezhnev - freedom and an opportunity to live in the homeland.
“To write “Babi Yar“ was smaller courage, than to print it“, - Yevtushenko said. Kosolapov was dismissed, naturally, but in a couple of years rehabilitated and appointed to the editor`s position of “The new world“. And now this thick magazine printed “sedition“, and readers handed over it and read to holes.
... E. A. Yevtushenko, this D`Artagnan of the Russian poetry, overcoming a serious illness, continues to work hard and it is productive: after extremely successful anthology “Stanzas of a Century“ work on the five-volume anthology “10 centuries of the Russian poetry“ is complete. And, of course, he continues to write fine verses, “dictated, as always, by either feeling of love, or sense of shame“.
