What monasteries were founded by grand duchesses Romanov?
In the 19th century grand duchesses Romanov often became princesses of the German origin. Before marriage they studied an orthodox catechism and though many of them could not pass into Orthodoxy (if their husbands were not successors of a throne), nevertheless preferred to choose belief, identical with the spouse.
Two of grand duchesses became foundresses of orthodox monasteries, but came to it in various ways.
Kiev It is sacred - the Pokrovsk convent was open in 1889. The grand duchess Aleksandra Petrovna, the nee princess Oldenburgskaya became his foundress. Family life of the grand duchess was not happy, at the spouse`s insistance it was forced to leave sons and to lodge in Kiev. Here Aleksandra Petrovna devoted all the time to charitable affairs and started implementation of the plan - to found convent at which there would be a clinic for poor and medical care would be a fundamental obligation of nuns and novices. Having offered all the funds for organization of the monastery, Aleksandra Petrovna became his mother superior, having accepted a monkhood under the name of Anastasia, and could see fruits of the efforts.
In the territory of the monastery temples, the hostel for sisters were built, it is based tserkovno - parish school at which there could live pupils, the icon-painting workshop, studio zolotoshveek is equipped. In monastic hospital there were two offices - therapeutic and surgical, treatment in hospital was free, as well as holiday of drugs in the equipped drugstore. The monastery existed on gifts of donors among which there were many members of an imperial family.
Sacredly - the Pokrovsk monastery continued to develop also after death of the nun Anastasia in 1900, but was closed by Bolsheviks in 1925. Elizabeth Fiodorovna, having become a widow/widower in 1905, changed the way of life, having turned from the brilliant woman of fashion nearly into the hermit. Several years of reflections and prayers led the grand duchess to the fact that she felt need to live and serve the people differently than what did it before by. In spite of the fact that she was a foundress and the trustee of many charitable organizations, she felt insufficiency of the actions. Meetings with aged men, pilgrimage, deep reflections led the grand duchess to the fact that it divided the property, having given part of the jewelry belonging to House of Romanovs to treasury, the part distributed to relatives and bought a ground on Big Ordynka. The monastery initially reflected and based not as the monastery. Originally Elizabeth Fiodorovna wanted to base a community diakoniss, but the holy Synod unanimously did not support her idea.
Marfo - the Mariinsky monastery of mercy was open in February, 1909, sixteen nuns accepted a vow and were devoted in krestovy sisters, and the grand duchess was imposed in a rank of the mother superior of monastery. In 1918 Elizabeth Fiodorovna was arrested and executed by Bolsheviks near Alapaevsk. Marfo - Mariinsky monastery was closed in 1926. Church glorification of the grand duchess took place in 1992. Now in the territory of Marfo - the Mariinsky monastery of mercy restored to a centenary there are medical and educational centers, a shelter for girls, a gymnasium, the charitable dining room, and also the temple and the museum.
So today, despite historical changes, the monasteries opened more than a century ago by grand duchesses Romanov exist and work.
