the Spanish conquistadors besides that took and ruined the earth of the New World, considered a duty to convert the local pagan population to Christianity. To America the numerous missionaries ready to endow both the life, and lives of those who will turn away from faith in Christ directed.
Morally - ethical standards of time were entirely on their party, and Catholicism of the beginnings will gradually extend across South America.
Together with Christianity missionaries began to present to neophytes and religious painting, to import for temples of the image of Saints on cloths, to invite in the New World of artists. So in the lands occupied by Cortes and Pissarro on which there are such states as Mexico today Peru, Panama and Bolivia, since the 17th century of the beginning will extend the painting of Baroque style which gained wide recognition in lands of conquerors.
Since the beginning of the 18th century among painters there were South American Indians and metises that brought echoes of local art and partly new interpretations of biblical scenes in works. The school of painting of Cuzco was so gradually created.
Originally there were two directions of school. The European masters created under the influence of the Italian, Spanish, Netherlands and Flemish fine arts, aboriginals tried to imprint in pictures faces habitual to their eye, ornaments, the nature, exotic birds.
On the cloths created by Indian painters it is possible to see Madonna against the Peruvian landscape surrounded with snow-white alpacas; its nimbus not always round, it is sometimes many-sided and decorated with gold vignettes; Maria`s look is turned on the earth or to the viewer, but not on heaven as that was demanded by the European tradition. Often Madonna was represented with the braids lowered on a breast that is with a traditional Peruvian female hairdress, in a hat and with magnificent jewelry - rings and earrings.
The angels and archangels reminding to Indians of spirits which they worshipped before appearance of Europeans on their lands were especially esteemed in Peru. The archangel Uriel was represented with the flaring sword in hands and in a brilliant armor, the archangel Mikhail - with the helmet decorated with multi-colored feathers. In pictures also unknown until then in Catholicism angels - the guardian angel of girls and the guardian angel of boys, and also the guardian angel of military appeared. As a result original picturesque style in which the European religious motives and naive art of the Andes mixed up turned out.
Bizzare shapes of jewelry, magnificent greens, flowers, richly embroidered clothes, expressive lines of the represented persons - all these qualities inherent in baroque art, strangely enough, lived in religious painting and a sculpture of Peru up to now.
As well as in the 18th century, today images of the Madonna, the baby Christ, the Holy Family, angels are very popular in Peru. Modern artists carry on traditions of the predecessors, trying to create pictures in Baroque style and using for this purpose oil, a linen canvas, gilding. The most striking picturesque examples of Cuzco school are in the main city cathedral and are widely presented in the Museum of religious art.
