Military Worm

In the woods of the different countries of Europe it is quite often possible to see enormous congestions of the small “wandering“ worms creeping on the ground. These worms no other than larvae of a military komarik. Serovato - white, with a black head and thin covers of a body, up to 10 mm long, these larvae live societies and eat the decaying substances. In a certain season they unite in one big chain reminding a host and slowly move in search of food. From there was also a name - military worm. The dense mass of mucous larvae in the form of the coiling tape from a distance can be taken for a snake.
the Similar picture to us had to be observed in Rybinsk the area, the Yaroslavl region. At the end of July and the first week of August on roads in damp places, on the sites which are not strongly lit and warmed up by the sun it was possible to see long columns of the larvae which are densely pressed to each other. A thick layer, in 1 - 1,5 cm in height, they move forward, sliding the friend on the friend. The head of a column stretches in width to 3 - 4 cm are also gradually narrowed to a tail to are single the individuals creeping one after another. Length of such columns reaches four meters. The number of larvae in one chain fluctuates from 600 to 50000.
In the wood to us was never succeeded to meet such chain of larvae. Apparently, the high grass cover and a friable laying do it a little noticeable. It is more difficult to move to larvae in the wood - constantly obstacles meet. From the column head small groups of larvae - intelligence agents continually separate, and for found the best, more convenient site for movement all others direct. If on the way obstacles (stones, the roots
of trees, packs, etc.) occur at intelligence agents they turn back and join bulk. The difference of century movement of a column and single larvae is very noticeable. Single larvae seem helpless, move very slowly, and in weight, sliding the friend on the friend, they go quickly; in one hour all column passed 130 cm
on the road Quite often it was necessary to see near columns predatory bugs - the ground beetles hunting for the lagging behind, weak larvae.
By sight larvae of a komarik wet, brilliant, and apparently, are afraid of sunshine. They move usually early morning hours, and with approach of midday for a long time stop and go deep a vpodstilka. Having staid two - four hours, larvae continue a way, but is more often already under a laying. Sometimes larvae stop also for shorter time, it is probable for rest. At the same time the column head stops in the beginning, and all chain gradually joins to stopped until all column is closed, forming irregular shape a ring. Okuklivaniye`s
of larvae happens on the earth. Dolls of the drill - yellow, the head and rudiments of wings darkly - brown. The laboratory of a larva pupated on August 8, and the mass departure of komarik began on August 12. Males and females were brought at the same time. Adult komarik of black color, at a female a paunch with lateral yellowish strips. Females are larger than males; length of a female 3 - 4,5 mm, male - to 3 mm. Females thick, sluggish, low-active, fly very badly. Unfortunately, in nature it was not succeeded to observe them.
