their invention - the ultrathin, transparent chip on a silicon basis working a certain period of time, from several minutes to several years, and then completely dissolved in water. This invention will open the new horizons in medicine: there will be an opportunity to implant tiny electronic schemes into a human body without the need for the subsequent extraction. The group of researchers of Taftsky University, Severo - the Western University and University of the State of Illinois call the invention the beginning of a new stage in science: entries into the area of “transitional electronics“.
“This electronics disappears after performance of the task“, - Yongangg Juan, the head of the team which was engaged in design and modeling of a new chip says. Usual electronic schemes do of silicon, it is dissolved in water for a long time. Disappearance of the typical scheme will take hundreds of years. Silicon plates, however thickness their only several nanometers therefore they in only several minutes are dissolved in water or liquid of an organism are also the cornerstone of transitional electronics.
Schemes with use of soluble conductors (for example, magnesium or its oxide) on ultrathin silicon plates allow to create transistors, solar batteries, generators, antennas and even simple 64 - pixel digital cameras which are completely dissolved in water.
The research group offers a set of options of use of the invention. Now surgeons avoid introduction of medical devices of control (for example, for check on an infection after operation) in the patient`s organism from - for difficulties of their extraction. But the implants made with use of transitional electronics can carry out diagnostic functions during certain time, and then be dissolved safely in an organism. It will allow to watch a condition of the patient after operation. Other transitional devices can control temperature or muscular activity.
Naturally, initially the invention was tested for animals. To rats implanted the implant which is monitoring existence of an infection after operation and completely destroying all microbes by means of heating. In three weeks after introduction in an organism of animals there was no trace of an alien subject left.
That the chip was not dissolved in an organism right after implantation, its surface is covered with a thin layer of natural silk. So far the organism is engaged in splitting of a cover, a silicon stuffing in perfect security. Thus, the silk layer is thicker, the chip will longer serve.
Many are skeptical about the new invention, being afraid of harmful impact on an organism. But developers assure: you should not be afraid of influence of the implanted scheme on health, silicon - the substance not alien to a human body, it is a part of blood and in small quantities will not do harm. Moreover, silicon is simply necessary for cell regeneration, restoration of muscular activity, and its shortcoming - one of the aging reasons. So chips are not harmful, and, on the contrary, are useful.
