On how many islands there is St. Petersburg?

All know that St. Petersburg stands on the Neva River - in that place where it flows into the Gulf of Finland. Many know that Vasilyevsky, Stone and Krestovsky - islands.

But often people do not think of the fact that the Petrograd party - the same island or that all downtown, the fact that to the South from Neva (Central district) - too a set of islands. St. Petersburg stands “on the rivers and canals“. How many here is islands?

Once I read: “Leningrad - the city thousands of islands“. It is clear, there was purely journalistic exaggeration - the given number looks painfully round. Then in some journalism about Leningrad I read that islands probably - is invisible, to count them too difficult, but - about about three hundred.

Then (still) of Leningrad I learned from the atlas that the number of the islands which are a part of the city changes depending on economic activity of people and that from the middle of the 19th century to the middle 70 - x years of the 20th century their quantity decreased with 147 (101 - different sources give different figures) to 46 (or even to 42).

The tsar Pyotr built the new capital on very boggy district and saw future northern Venice in the new city. Pyotr in Venice was not (gathered, but did not leave) and was in love with this city in absentia, according to stories of eyewitnesses. And there was he in Holland, too the country of channels and, probably, the impressions of Holland were transferred to the imagined Venice - and to future Sankt - Piterburkh.

So channels on his order dug not only for a drainage and drainage of the soil, but also for surroundings of future city on water where to houses it will be possible to drive easily by the boat, and to shipyard or a manufactory on the barge to bring materials and to bring the made goods.

By order of Pyotr on Vasilyevsky Island channels were dug (on the place of present first lines), ship canals to the South from Neva were dug. From the point of view of modern logistics, it is possible to speak about certain “hang-up“ of the tsar Pyotr, but transportation of materials across canals indeed was quicker, and is much cheaper, than transportation by a cartage.

After death of the tsar - the reformer the channels which are dug out on his order began to fill up slowly. So, channels of Vasilyevsky Island were dug in the 18th century. The Ligovsky channel dug in 1718-1721 and for water supply of the city and as a transport artery - the piece behind a piece in the 19th and 20th centuries was filled up.

Both in XVIII, and in XIX, and in the 20th century people continued to fall asleep in territories of St. Petersburg and a bog, and the lake, and the rivulet - and many earlier dug channels. Eventually with ours - that winter frosts - would also not leave Peter Venetion...

And all - channels of St. Petersburg is a lot of and hard worked! Across Fontanka, the Ekaterina`s channel (nowadays to Griboyedov Canal), to Moika, Obvodny Canal passenger and walking boats ran, the vessels transporting the freights importing materials for factories and which were taking out their production went. Even still across Obvodny Canal, near Aleksandro - the Nevsky monastery overtake on water rafts of logs for woodworking factory.

And as Neva worked and works! On piers on Neva and near the river on channels transfer of goods from boards of easy river crafts on warehouses, and from warehouses - on the vessels “river sea“ was made for export to Europe. And now during navigation many steamships gather at “extreme“ bridges through Neva to pass when part in their dead of night.

Presently the rivers and canals are assigned to tourist routes. Near each bridge on the Nevsky barkers with megaphones and posters with information on excursions stand and go. On Moika, Fontanka - not to force the way from parokhodik with transparent roofs and huge windows on both boards. All day long one by one they go along standard routes. But if in Soviet period all heatweight clocks were old same, then now tourists are carried also by boats, and the being “light river trucks“ somehow remade, generally - “is big esm a variety of the galoshes going on the rivers and Peter`s canals“.

With the invention of internal combustion engines and simplification of logistics which is torn off from horse draft now value of channels of the city sharply fell in the twentieth century. In the decades which passed almost without operation they were silted, became non-navigable.

But since the beginning of this century on their coast and in the water area work began to boil - repair of embankments, cleaning and deepening of channels began. It seems that this work should be planned for decades, many the garbage and silt collected at the bottom. The embankments of Fontanka and Griboyedov Canal damaged by time are restored.

All navigation on the rivers and canals slowly and impressively float one for one heatweight clocks. On the embankment the guide`s voice from loudspeakers is heard: “To the right of us the house built century.“, “Pay attention on...“ Especially amusing comments are heard when water excursions float by hostels of higher education institutions. Itself heard something type: “... And now the dormitory is placed here, pay attention to naked heels in a window of the third floor. Soon session...“
