Whom did the German poet L. Uland call in the spring which did not follow fall?
on November 18, 1827, in 8 days after the birth of the second daughter, in 11 days prior to the 25 - the anniversaries and in one and a half months prior to an exit, the third, “The almanac of fairy tales“, Wilhelm Gauf died. by
With the hero of this article at me connected very bright and concrete children`s reminiscence. Whether in the second, whether in the third class I stayed in a summer camp, and our guide got custom after a release to read to all group aloud Wilhelm Gauf`s fairy tales.
It is necessary to tell that in those days among the Soviet kids so-called horror stories - such folk art about any red hands and coffins on six castors - creativity unartful, but for children`s mentality very impressive were extremely popular. Horror stories I then knew fair quantity, and here idea of Gauf`s creativity was limited to screen versions - the animated film about Small to Flour and a teleplay about the Dwarf - the Nose.
Consciously or incidentally, but in hands of the guide there was not adapted pressing, and the fullest collection of the German storyteller. And in a semi-twilight began to sound a story about the ship of dead persons (the first, the version of a legend of “Flying Dutchman“ heard by me), a heart of stone, the doctor who was cutting off the head the living girl and Wilhelm Korschuna, wrapped in a skin of the killed cow. It was visible that this reading carries away the guide. That to us, we lay zavorozhyonny at all, and after the end of reading long could not fall asleep. The reminiscence was so bright that I did not calm down, did not find (quite recently) yet that edition of fairy tales of Gauf to which listened at summer night 30 years ago.
And I had an occasion again to look (now together with you) at creativity and life of the German storyteller.
The first that strikes at acquaintance to Wilhelm Gauf`s biography - it is, of course, the small term of life. At everything while at it it was died quite successful and perspective, without special everyday tragedies or love torments.
Our hero was born on November 29 in 1802 in Stuttgart - the town of the tiny Vyurtembergsky duchy. In those days Germany represented a peculiar scrappy blanket of similar minigosudarstvo, not without reason the hero of the short story of Gauf “The emperor`s portrait“ will exclaim: “Oh, Germany, Germany, your trouble in your dissociation!“.
Only one event saddened Gauf`s childhood - when he was 7 years old, his father died. There was it soon after Augustus Gauf`s exit from... prisons. And everything began so well - he was a secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until the suspicious duke Vyurtembergsky sent him for a lattice on some slander accusing the father Gauf of accessory of the underground revolutionary organization. Though in a year the good name of Augustus was restored, and he is released, stay in prison affected its health...
Consider that echoes of this tragedy were reflected in the tale of the slandered Small Flour and ungrateful king whose all kingdom, as well as Wurtemberg, so is not enough that it can be passed in 8 hours.
But little Gauf could not award then the offender of a family with a long nose and asinine ears. After death of the father all family Gaufov moved to Tuebingen, to the house of the grandfather on the maternal line. Reading books from extensive grandfather`s library, and then - their free retelling to two younger sisters became hobby of Wilhelm.
Probably, already then he felt literary burning, but... The family had a little money, and was decided that full-fledged university education will be got by the elder brother of Wilhelm - Herman. The younger brother had to arrive on faculty of theology and philosophy - only where there was the state grant.
Of course, any pastor or the theologian Wilhelm was not going to become. At university proved as the vigorous squabbler and even became the leader of the student`s company calling itself “torch carriers“ (a pier, fiery rushes of soul and so on) and wearing red trousers. As well as many student`s brotherhoods, they moderately played pranks and once even painted red paint of a leg of a statue of Saint Georgy.
In 1824 after the termination of university Wilhelm continues to dream of literary career for now he settles the tutor to children of the baron Ernst Yugen von Hoegel. For these children he also began to compose the original fairy tales. Baroness von Hoegel listened the tutor with not smaller pleasure, than children, and suggested Wilhelm to write down and publish all these inventions.
It was not necessary to persuade Gauf, and directly before New year the almanac of fairy tales for 1826 for sons and daughters of educated estates“ came out “. Fairy tales had stable popularity and to issue similar almanacs at the beginning of a year became for the writer tradition. It is a pity, short...
The release of “Almanac“ was preceded by small scandal. In 1825 there was a novel “The Person from the Moon“ signed with a name of Heinrich Kloren - the author of fashionable sentimental “pop-music“. Actually the novel was written by Gauf and was the frank humiliating parody to luscious style of above-mentioned Kloren. There was a court, Gauf paid 50 thalers, but instead of his name for the first time loudly sounded in literary society.
Though the writer also does not suspect about the fast end, he creates with a huge speed - writes a set of short stories and poems (two of which - “A dawn, a dawn, you call me to early death“ and “There are I in dark midnight“ - will become national songs). And in 1826 Gauf, at last, finds literary glory of “the German Walter Scott“ after the publication of the historical novel “Liechtenstein“. Popularity of the novel was so big that in 1840 the duke von Ulrich will even build the Liechtenstein lock described in the book in neogothic style.
Objectivity for the sake of, once you give several words and so “not kosher“ subject, Gauf`s anti-Semitism. Actually the writer in this question is not original at all. The aversion for Jews was quite widespread among Germans - is admissible, the colleague Gaufa - Hoffman - too represented these people with venomous irony (perhaps, not all guess that greedy and not palatable Mosh Terpin from “Tsakhes`s Crumb“ - the Jew). But Gauf was lucky less: according to its short story “Jew Suess“ in nazi Germany the movie, naturally, strongly corrected and more “ideologically sustained“, than the primary source was shot. Therefore with a careful eye to regrettable events of the XX century hold back some parties of works of the German writers of the 19th century. So why I write about it?
The matter is that everywhere it is specified that Gauf`s “Almanacs“ include 14 fairy tales. In my book as I considered, them left thirteen. It turned out that the dropped-out fairy tale was called “Jew Abner who saw nothing“ where the crafty hero with amazing deductive abilities outwitted himself for what there was mercilessly a bit (it is visible, to greater pleasure of listeners). It is clear, that the Soviet censorship with its principles of internationalism did not pass similar, and after collapse of the USSR the fairy tale was already published - and even under one cover with “Jew Suess“ that speaks about much.
But we will leave delicate topics and we will return to Gauf.
By 1827 Gauf becomes the editor of the prestigious newspaper “Morgenblatt“ (“A morning leaf“), and now is able to afford marries the cousin Louise with whom it was betrothed long ago. It would seem - live, create and rejoice, but in November of the same year Wilhelm got sick in a bed with a typhoid. And on November 18 - in 8 days after the birth of the second daughter, in 11 days prior to the 25 - the anniversaries and in one and a half months prior to its exit 3 - go “The almanac of fairy tales“ the writer dies...
The German poet Ludwig Uland with bitterness writes: “He did not experience falls, but its spring lets know what fruits would be borne by fall“ .
Subsequently, Gauf`s glory will cease, many critics will write that his literary talent considerably concedes to the same Novalis or Hoffman. But the name of the writer is not forgotten still - in many respects thanking fairy tales. We will talk about fairy tales separately, next time...
