How to prepare roses for wintering? From personal experience

If to trust archeologists, culture of a rose contain about 5 thousand years. In the II millennium B.C. roses grew up in palace gardens of the Chinese governors, and several centuries later - in flower beds of the Egyptian Pharaohs. However today I will not tell about history of a rose and its cultivation in flower beds, now it is much more actual to talk about the correct wintering of a rose in the conditions of the Russian winter.

Unfortunately, in our climate roses often suffer from a vymerzaniye, it is shown in the form of browning of wood of escapes and in extinction of kidneys. Such bush, alas, perishes. Roses should be prepared for safe wintering carefully.

As well as all perennial plants, a rose lays “in store“ nutrients which then spends during the winter, and our task consists in helping a plant to stock up with these substances. For this purpose at the beginning of August it is brought phosphoric and potash fertilizers, watering and loosening of a bush in order that there was a gradual ripening of wood completely stops.

The first frosts can sometimes happen also in September, and then there is dry and warm weather again. Such frosts are, as a rule, not terrible to roses, but just in case the bush can be covered for the night with paper, fabric or ukryvny material.

Before shelter of roses for the winter it is necessary to cut off strong escapes on height about 40-50 cm, to completely cut out thin and weak escapes and to remove all leaves (leaves from a bush best of all to delete from below up and not at once everything, and within several days). In dry windless weather to process fungicide means, for example, 1% solution of bordeaux liquid or 3% solution of a copper vitriol.

The soil around bushes is mulched peat, humus or dry sand with ashes (1 glass of ashes on a sand bucket) on thickness in 10 - 12 cm. Besides in the spring the mulch will serve as fine fertilizer for the roses weakened by wintering. Very good shelter are the fir-tree fir twigs.

Finally roses cover after approach of constant negative temperatures (minus 4-7 degrees), under our conditions it usually - the end of October.

From personal experience I understood that best of all roses winter in so-called “shalashik“ . It is simple to build it and big monetary costs will not be involved. Around the rosebushes prepared for wintering are established a cross - crosswise arches from a wire. To arches fir twigs or some stalks fasten (for example, raspberries). From above in two layers I cover ukryvny with nonwoven fabric, pinning it to the soil wooden pegs.

In such shelter to roses it is good (still any bush at me did not freeze) as it allows to protect a plant from hit of excess moisture, and thanks to an air layer, in “shalashik“ favorable temperature (from 0 to minus 1 degree) during the whole winter remains. When constant snow cover lays down“, to roses even the most hard frost is not terrible.

Pletisty and polupletisty roses winter also without frame shelter, it is only enough to bend down accurately escapes to the soil covered with stalks of raspberry or fir twigs, to cover from above with one more layer of branches, and then a double layer of ukryvny material, having fixed it by pegs. All the rest will make snow. But keep in mind that it is necessary to bend down to the earth escapes of a pletisty rose with care, at strong pressing it is easy to break them.

Strangely enough, but most often roses vanish not from a vymerzaniye, and from a vyprevaniye. It occurs quite often if plants are covered too “warmly“. In such conditions of a rose “sleep superficially“, process of breath happens actively, and there is no sufficient ventilation under shelter. The stuffy and saturated with moisture air leads to rotting of escapes and death of plants. So not especially be zealous, wrapping up them for the winter, in everything the measure is necessary.
