Lech Mayevski, “Mill and cross“. How to stop time?

I Hate the phrase “cinema not for all“, especially, when it is significantly said by my friend from film distribution. But for this aiming to it she is grateful. Though began to understand something only from the third viewing.

Generally I love speed, the plot dashingly twirled, a difficult intrigue. Anything there is no it in the movie of the Polish director Lech Mayevski. It is as senseless to retell it as “Andrei Rublyov“ of Tarkovsky. Therefore I will try to transfer the feeling which, perhaps, will cause desire to watch the movie, and at others this desire will fight off one. And it - is normal!

Lech Mayevski picturized, to be exact, recovered by means of 3D - technology and a special chamber Pieter Bruegel`s picture “A way to Golgotha“ painted by the artist in 1564. The picture which is stored in the Vienna Museum of history of arts at the unsophisticated, but attentive viewer can raise a natural question: “The artist, hour, confused nothing? Golgotha, it seems, to the south … And the people are dressed somehow not biblically …“

Considering the customer`s wishes, the painter postpones an evangelical event in modern to it Flanders going through difficult times of the Spanish dominion: “So, it could be the group of the Saints who are coming back from the past to mourn destiny of Flanders“.

Gallows and torment poles with wheels in Bruegel`s pictures - time sign. The Spanish inquisition literally burned out and cut out discordant with doctrines of Catholic church: “Fires did not die away; the monks who were more able to burn down reformers, than to disprove them supported fire on fires, enclosing human meat“. Protestants it appeared so many that the death sentence was pronounced to all residents of the Netherlands. Fortunately, it was difficult to carry out it.

Such is a historical context of a picture and the movie, at the heart of which - the book “Mill and Cross“ written by the researcher of creativity of Bruegel Michael Gibson.

Lech Mayevski did not begin to limit himself to history of creation of a masterpiece, and showed destinies of ten characters of a picture, including the artist and his wives (Yoanna Litvin), the customer of a picture Nicholas Yongelink (Michael York), Virgin Mary (Charlotte Rempling) who tells the strange and disturbing soul words about the son (special gratitude to the director that left his image off-screen): “It became threat to each petty tyrant who is concerned by neither God, nor the person, and only own poor firmness and force“.

Bruegel performed by Rutger Hauer, mystically similar to the great fellow countryman, begins to create the past from the present: thinks over picture composition, selects characters, dresses them, carefully straightening folds on clothes, places as chessmen to it to one the conducted party … The savior whom the Spanish soldiers - terrible argument of the artist against inquisition are going to crucify on a cross.

Actors according to stylistics of the movie play heroes of a picturesque cloth. The computer graphics with a jeweler accuracy recreating picture details is so organically interwoven into interiors of a mill and the country houses rented in historical places of Poland and the Czech Republic that you feel in events. Beauty of each shot bewitches - there is a wish to take away the movie on screenshots.

In the movie there are few words and music, generally sounds - laughter, neighing, croak of crows, a scratch of wheels and millstones. We look the Artist`s eyes around - his shkodny children, their infinitely patient mother, people pursued and cruelly killed for some unknown to us sins, the flirting men and women - only characters of future picture. And over all this is the Miller who is passionlessly looking at people from the dizzy height of the Mill.

Almost distinguishable on a cloth, in the movie the Miller plays one of leading roles: the movement of a hand it stops time, giving the chance to the Artist to transfer the reality which is thought up and built by it to a canvas. The creator meets requirements of the Creator if He needs it.

The director literally follows Pieter Bruegel`s idea that time is static - crucify “here and now“, the landscape, a style of uniforms of executioners and the tool of murder only changes. All the rest is invariable, as well as the ridiculous, terrible dance of crowd finishing the movie - “and as a result ignorance, inert customs and customs won a victory, and I understand nothing any more“.

“Why to me to watch Bruegel or Bosch? Because they are masters. Creators! As they worked as wrote - try, repeat! It will not turn out. Therefore they need to be divided, put separately - they created the world, but they collected it from wordly vanity. Here that means to be an artist or even the genius“, - Lech Mayevski told somehow. At it - it turned out.
