How to grow up water-melons in an open ground?

the Water-melon belong to melon cultures of family of pumpkin. For normal growth it needs a lot of light and heat, especially at the first stage of development of a plant. Therefore it is possible to receive a good harvest of ripe, juicy and tasty water-melons in a midland of Russia in an open ground not always.

If the summer drops out cold and cloudy, then the real ripe, ripened water-melon will not help to receive any care. Grow up - that fruits will grow, but the water-melon pulp can not reach saturated red coloring, and appear only a pink shade. And taste will be not that. But also in this case the real gardener does not despair, and uses immature fruits for salting. If it is correct to salt such arbuzik, then the real delicacy turns out!

But if the summer comes hot, then then it is possible to enjoy much magnificent ripe water-melons with amazingly beautiful brightly - red pulp. And taste at the ripened, just broken water-melon and from the melon field - and not to express in words! Well, very tasty! You eat such water-melons though every day all day long - and do not become boring! Therefore I all - grow up water-melons in Siberia (in Altai) in an open ground.

I choose the place on a kitchen garden in the fall for pass - a melon field so that onions, cabbage or potatoes would be predecessors of water-melons. I grow up water-melons in holes, and I bring in the places planned for them on one bucket on each hole of long-term humus of a chicken dung, humus from compost and sand. The earth at me on a site heavy therefore sand, sometimes, I bring also two buckets. I mix everything directly on a surface of the soil and I leave without redigging till spring.

I select grades of water-melons hardy and early, suitable for short Siberian summer. Well such grades as the Siberian Fires, the Sugar Kid, Olginsky proved to be in recent years . That there was no repollination, different grades are not placed nearby. Always one - two holes I bring for more large-fruited grades, for example, of Astrakhan . During a hot season they perfectly keep up and yield quite large fruits.

In the spring when already becomes rather warmly (on May 15 - 20), I plow a cultivator the planned sites for holes, and I try to go as little as possible on a melon field and not to condense soil. At once I form holes with a diameter of 1 meter, free space between holes I leave 1,5 - 2 meters (between edges). At once I sow dry seeds of water-melons in each hole (not less than 10 seeds) on depth of 3 - 4 cm. I water holes with the warm water heated on the sun and I mulch peat.

In some holes I land the grown-up seedling of water-melons (with 2 - 3 real leaves), and between seedling all the same I sow also seeds. In a week seeds I repeat crops in all holes in precisely the same way. Now, if the seedling or the first shoots die or will begin to hurt from cold weather, then the second echelon of sprouts will escape. Often happens that shoots of later crops overtake in development even seedling, and they yield the best fruits. To Seius it is so dense in holes in order that then, in the conditions of the most severe competition, there was an opportunity to leave the strongest plants. The expense of seeds turns out big, but as I prepare seeds independently and always with a stock, for me it is not a problem.

When appear and shoots of water-melons begin to gain strength, gradually I thin out them and by the time of emergence in plants of 3 - 4 real leaves I leave in a hole on one. Sometimes - on two. During this time the part of very young water-melons can be replaced to other place, and it despite the developed opinion that water-melons cannot be replaced! If it is correct to do it, then they are not ill at all and yield an excellent harvest. In our district in the first decade of June still there are dangerous night frosts. In such cases the melon field should be covered for the night. I use for this purpose the nonwoven cloth cut by strips.

Regularly I water the growing-up water-melons, at hot weather 2 - 3 times a week. Watering has to be plentiful! And it is necessary to water not only holes, but also all area of a melon field. Very accurately I weed holes and I loosen, but only at the very beginning of vegetation. In general, between holes it is better not to go (only as a last resort) because roots of water-melons widely disperse in the parties and to damage them very easily. When water-melons expand, weeds will not be able to do any harm to them any more, and I just do not pay attention to them.

In June when on water-melons 2 - 3 real leaves appear, I carry out top dressing of plants by solution of a fresh chicken dung (1 to 15), at the rate of one bucket on a hole. I do the second same top dressing in a month, but only in case plants badly increase green material. I carry out a nipping of lashes only once, besides, to be trampled down less on a melon field. When there are ovaries of water-melons and reach the size of large apple (10 cm in the diameter), on each plant I leave 2 - 3 lashes with such ovaries, and no more than 2 fruits on each lash. After an ovary I leave 3 - 5 leaves, and I delete a tip of a lash. The harvest turns out no more than 3 - 6 fruits from one plant. It is quite enough, but water-melons grow large and perfectly grow ripe.

In August when water-melons begin to ripen, periodically (time in 7 - 10 days) accurately I overturn fruits the lower party to the sun. It becomes in order that water-melons kept up evenly. And that they did not begin to rot, during wet weather I enclose under them small plates. Waterings, especially in hot weather, I do not stop till the end of a season at all. Only in 3 - 5 days prior to harvesting I finish waterings. If who considers that at the same time water-melons will be unsweetened, then very much he is mistaken! Just the opposite: if there is not enough moisture, then the water-melon will be tasteless. And that the water-melon grew sugar, it is necessary for it much - a lot of sun and waters in prosperity.

In the last year, fruitful for water-melons, with pass - a melon field from 6 holes (only 10 plants) about 40 fruits were collected. From them pieces 20 - on 5 - 6 kg, the others on - 2 - 3 kg, well and two very best - 8 and 9 kg! Practically all water-melons ripened completely, from them several (about 10) let on salting. And absolutely green and not quite ripe there was no.

And ate water-melons, fir-trees - to satiety and in plenty! It is still remembered! And as you will forget, the fresh, ripe, most tasty water-melon which is grown up by the hands is just real miracle!
