What at the book under a cover? The author`s sign “across Havkina“

I Went in the childhood to libraries - and all thought: how librarians manage to place quickly on regiments all those books what for the working day readers bring to them? Not at the nights sort these piles on “tables of return“?

And here still the radio broadcast “Club of the famous captains“ added food for imaginations about night life of libraries... And accurately thus testified: at night the library does without regular personnel.

Now I know - the author`s sign helps to cope with establishing order on book shelves to librarians . The publisher places this sign among other unclear codes on the back of the title page, and librarians as a part of the library code write on a label which is pasted in the left top corner of a cover if the book thin, or on a back below if more thickly. Or all this is written with dark or white ink (ah, an oxymoron!) in the left top corner of a cover.

A turn of the title page of the book in general bears on itself a lot of any information. Only it is necessary to know how to read this information.

We already dealt with number ISBN. And if to study the page as it is necessary, from top to down and from left to right, we will see that it begins in the left top corner with mysterious codes: UDC, BBK - both abbreviations at a number of figures. Below this the author`s sign - a letter with two - three figures is placed .

All three codes repeat below - in the model of a catalog card, at the name of the book and the short summary. Besides the author`s sign opens itself this model. Already this arrangement testifies to the importance of this code, in the idea leaning on usvoyaemy all of us in school infancy the alphabet.

The author`s sign is determined by L. B. Havkina`s tables (1871-1949) - “grandmothers of the Russian library science“. Which, by the way, this specific studied science at the Berlin university, and developed the classification, being impressed with system of library classification of Melville Dewey.

Its system, in turn, is a basis for classification of books in the USA, first of all - in the greatest book-depository of the world, Library of the Congress. Got acquainted with Dewey`s technique, his system of L. B. Havkin at the World Fair in Paris of 1900 - here undoubted advantage of the international exhibitions and the world without borders!

The author`s sign in Havkina`s tables, as a rule, begins with the same letter, as a surname of the author (or the name of the book if this book - the collection), together with figures several first letters of this surname or the name mean. For example: P11 is P; P12 - Ra; P13 - Rabo; P14 - Rag; P15 - Is glad and so on.

If in library the fund of books for which the name begins with the same word (for example, catalogs of the state museums) is formed, for creation of an author`s sign pertinently it appears to use a keyword (The Hermitage - E, the Tretyakov gallery - T, the Russian Museum - P, etc.) .

The system of specification is thought over. For example, for Dumas`s book - the father the author`s sign will be D96O, for the book of his son - D96S. It is possible to display in an author`s sign, for example, number of the edition - number registers the top index after a row from a letter and figures.

“Encoder“ resorts to Havkina`s tables once - at receipt of the book in library and that more for secure, it is demanded by office instructions. Ideally it is enough to librarian to trust in professionalism of the publisher which the author`s sign placed on the back of the title page as it demands to do state standard.

The librarian should look only at an author`s sign - and it defines at once where the place of the book on the shelf. The system, as you can see, is simple, clear, convenient in use.

So if you came to library, began to look for literature necessary to you according to catalogs - surely write out these small letters and tsiferka in the requirement. So you will help the librarian to find books necessary to you quicker.
