Whether it is possible to tell about the Bible language an art - naivety?
Being surprised to variety of the world, likely, any person asks questions that there is Life, Truth, Lyubov, Sanctity. And everyone finds the answers, coming to them in the way - through contemplation, work, belief, art.
For many the Bible became a source of answers about essential. Perhaps, the most readable book for history of mankind was illustrated uncountable number of times. Plots of bible stories inspire throughout centuries of artists, musicians, sculptors, writers and poets.
For me some time ago became a bolt from the blue that naive art covers, including, and a belief subject. And without denying either the Western European school of religious painting, or an iconography, it would be desirable to share my naive opening. Assimilating to children, artists are naivist and primitives in own way open the bright, expressive, open, difficult and simple world - our world about which it is told in the Writing.
In a naive manner it is possible to treat illustrations of bible stories differently. Someone believes that the naivety and primitivism are inadmissible in images on similar subjects, others, on the contrary, consider that the simplified art expression of religious philosophy gives the chance easier it to understand. And initially Christ and Virgin Mary`s images were executed schematically that did not belittle their sanctity. Motives of the “naive“ image of Saints can also be found in a Coptic iconography.
The orthodox Alexandria (Coptic) church is one of the most ancient in the east, the apostle and evangelist Mark who converted aboriginals of Egypt to Christianity is considered her founder. To 580 g. she already finally separated from Constantinople patriarchy and up to now uses a Coptic ceremony at church service. Such historical circumstance as capture of Egypt by Muslims in 641 g, isolated at all Copts who got to a ring of the gentiles dominating over them.
Without having an opportunity to develop the religious art and to perfect artistic images, and also to absorb new trends of an iconography, Copts remained till these days at the same level of a mirovyrazheniye at which were at the beginning of Christianity. But this kept children`s condition of creativity gave them the chance to preserve motives of early Christian culture practically in its original state.
Coptic icons on technology of the execution most of all remind children`s drawings. At the same time they bear in themselves that expression of open pleasure, rare, clear for all, which in an iconography of the East and in religious painting of the West - behind a small exception - was replaced with the image of sufferings.
Saying about some receptions, one may say, that all great and sacred is represented big in comparison with all the rest. In the African orthodox icons proportions are not observed. The particular emphasis is placed on eyes - eyes of Saints are huge and expressive, they look not at the viewer, and afar that creates the prayful atmosphere. As on an icon can be represented not only Saints, but also their opponents, icon painters represent them variously: at Saints two eyes, at characters negative - only one are visible at once (for example, the Serpent on Georges the Victorious`s icon, Judas on an icon Christ`s Kissing).
Absolutely differently in a Coptic iconography the plot of flight of the Holy Family to Egypt looks and holds a specific place here. Copts in this case already act as the people which accepted on the earth the baby Christ, Virgin Mary and Iosif. On icons the details speaking about stay of the Holy family in the Egyptian lands - pyramids, palm trees, the boat, deep Nile with the frolicing small fishes are represented.
The Coptic iconographic tradition affected an iconography of the Syrian and Ethiopian churches. And in temples of the Middle East and Africa often it is possible to meet images of Christ, Virgin Mary and Saints in a manner of naive art.
Marc Chagall was one of world renowned painters which depicted characters of the Old Testament in primitive style. Its illustrations of bible stories became world renowned. Continuous work, travel for inspiration across Syria, Palestine, Egypt as a result of a distance to write to Chagall hundred five it is black - white etchings, and also tens of works of painting which were included into the Bible published in 1956 in French.
Carrying on this tradition, in the modern world absolutely identical motives appeared. Works of David Popiashvili to whom the Georgian Orthodox Church charged registration of the Scripture can serve as an example of that. Thus, the Bible translated to Georgian appeared illustrated with the artist - a naivist.
And answering a question of heading whether it is possible to say on serious subjects language of primitive or naive painting, it appears, what quite appropriate is possible to tell. First of all to open in itself the child and again to see children`s eyes this wonderful world.
