How twice to celebrate Maslenitsa?
Are known that Russians like to celebrate so that sometimes celebrate the same holiday twice. Besides the second New year, with the basis, full on that, it is possible to celebrate also Maslenitsa twice.
What proved date of a holiday this year - in February, in revelry of winter?
The matter is that start date of Maslenitsa “floats“, depending on the beginning of the Lent. The Lent, in turn, comes to the end with Easter which pays off according to a lunar calendar and should not coincide with Easter Judaic. As a result holidays can be displaced in time in quite big limits.
Maslenitsa - a holiday joyful, traditionally loose, its emotional filling is other than the semantic maintenance of the Lent. Therefore Pancake Week always precedes the Lent.
It is not good and it is not bad, it is pro-hundred-tradition - and why not to participate in celebration? Positive emotions always on advantage.
And those who not against to celebrate more, can celebrate Maslenitsa once again, according to solar (but not lunar) a calendar.
Ancestors celebrated the Meeting of spring in defined (and much more corresponding) term: the last week before the vernal equinox and week later. This date is logical: from the date of an equinox day begins to prevail over night, agricultural new year begins from now on (date of New year habitual to us does not correspond to natural cycles). Days after approach of an equinox are devoted to awakening of a bear. The mask or the bear suit (which is turned out by fur outside a sheepskin coat) were indispensable attributes of Maslenitsa.
Ancient Pancake week ceremonies safely “moved“ to present Pancake Week. Now it is fashionable to follow traditions: the effigy, pancakes, zaklichka, forgiveness, fisticuffs …
Maslenitsa has Every day the name and rituals. But whether often we understand sense of the made actions? And ancestors did nothing just like that. Honoring of Gods and ancestors - not entertainment and not formality, here everything is filled with sense.
All know that pancake - the Sun symbol. In the ancient time there were frying pans with gear edges and the drawn cross, apparently, intended for baking of ceremonial pancakes. Why a lot of attention is paid to solar symbolics? Life of the farmer depends on the Sun, on timely alternation of seasons. With an ulterior motive the ritual embroidery representing the goddess Makosh with the upraised hands (probably, in a similar pose sang draft ritual songs) and goddesses - women in labor on horses with Sakha lived up to our time. The sun was imitated also by a fiery wheel, skatyvayemy from the mountain, and fires. Through fires jumped, threw old unnecessary things into them - possibly, it is the cleaning ritual including including disposal from old, dying off. The winter dies, there comes new year in which cleared need to enter.
More precisely, there comes the new summer - Slavs considered “summer“, but not years, and it is logical: warm season is most important for agricultural culture. The winter, figuratively speaking, drops out of an active agricultural cycle.
By the way, Maslenitsa effigy imitating winter is not casual, burn. In - the first, the Sun coming into force overcomes winter. In - the second, the winter does not leave, namely dies, it reflects natural alternation of dying - revival, peculiar to all surrounding.
In the spring the winter dies, in the fall comes again to give rest to the earth. Grain is “buried“ in the earth that it revived a new harvest. In the spring the nature revives, life triumphs again. Pancake week revelry, fun, an entertainment, fisticuffs - all this symbolizes a life victory over death. Various drivings from hills, driving sledge, swing on a swing - allegedly, elements of the rituals directed to awakening of the nature.
A plentiful meal and ritual fights - the integral element and archaic funeral ceremonies. In them the same was symbolized, in fact: life victory over death.
In case of Pancake week ceremonies it can be also funeral symbolics in relation to the left winter, and just demonstration of the vital beginning. Funeral ceremonies of our ancestors included, besides “crying“, still dancings and singing. There are in Pancake week traditions elements of a cult of ancestors which come to relatives to the world of live.
It seems that an echo of pagan times is also the forgiveness ceremony. New year in which we want to enter without debts and offenses begins.
