Gleb Torsky, “The people of Israel is living!“. What is asked by the Jew from the Lord?
Gleb Torsky`s Picture “Legion“. Sunny day. A shadow - almost steep. City landscape: very narrow small streets, a lancet arch of pass between houses, arches of window openings. Moshchenaya Street, throughout the street two man`s silhouettes in hats, palm trees are visible.
In the foreground - two soldiers with automatic machines, at one in hands - a small suitcase (means, it is not patrol). Two cats sort out the relations under a window of an institution on which glass the enormous tea cup is drawn, and over a window - a sign “פ ל פ ל ב ו ר ק ס“ (that in translation from Hebrew means “falafel, burekas“, and in transfer to concepts habitual to the Russian ear - “the pea balls fried in oil“ and “puff cottage cheese pies (potato, mushrooms, spinach)“.
Slightly at some distance on the right - one more outlet. A sign - “ב ג ד י ם נ ע ל י י ם“ (“Clothes, footwear“).
To the left of soldiers down the small street there is very elderly couple - both with absolutely white heads. Before them on the course one more shop. Judging by the rags which are hanged out outside, sell any haberdashery there: scarves, kerchiefs...
At the corner, in a showcase aperture, the man of the European look sits: moustaches, accurately tonsured beard, shoes like moccasins. It in pile (believer). In his hands - a cane.
The show-window before which he sits shows us the medieval knight (it there was a wish to be put into words Arkady Isakovich Raikin - “srendekovy“) with a spear and a board, in an armor. On a board - a symbol of the Roman legion.
The little shop of “JERUSALEM PERFEKT ART“ (if it is possible to translate so - “magnificent art of Jerusalem“), probably, belongs to natives of Germany - tells writing of the word “perfekt“ about it. Also he offers the visitors gifts “from antiquity“ age not less than couple of thousands of years. How many among these gifts of fakes - even the owner of shop does not know.
In the foreground at the left - as a life symbol - the cart with bagels “ב י י ג ל ה“ (beygala). And in the center of a picture - an unusual stone table on which there are two cups, a plateau with the beygal (the small crackling ringlets from the test covered with salt and sumsumy).
If to look narrowly at a table, it is visible that its lateral surface not smooth, it is furrowed. Obviously, it is the rest of some ancient column. And on this surface the inscription is put with Latin letters which can be translated approximately so: “We, soldiers of the X legion, demonstrate that there are no Jews here and will never be“.
Jerusalem, free from Jews... So the inscription on the small street in Old Jerusalem which is located near Shkhemsky gate says. It is only necessary to enter gate, to turn to the right and to pass slightly forward - and you will see this unusual little table and Jews who exist around it.
Here so Gleb Torsky, the artist, saw Dina Rubina`s story. Credibility of a statement caused in it unrestrained desire to find a column and to decipher anew an inscription (if it exists).
Gleb began to act. It included in searches of all the acquaintances, all friends, all who somehow could help it. Everywhere he received one answer: “There is no such column!“
Gleb was not given. It continued to dispatch questions. And once the answer in which this column was described came and the inscription on it, - from Germany was deciphered. Alas, the maintenance of an inscription had no relation to Jews. She reported (inscription) that soldiers of the X legion put this column in honor of the commander.
And how beautifully it was presented by Dina Rubina! And what to do to the artist? To tell to the world the truth hidden from general public or to leave to live in paints a picturesque legend?
Moltke spoke (if to trust gossips): “Truth, truth, and only truth. But not all truth“. Gleb went in the footsteps of Moltke. It left an inscription solution to the audience. And if I did not hear it from Gleb`s lips, I would not doubt truthfulness of the reference.
We again at the same intersection, but the artist looks in other party now (the picture is called “The people of Israel are living!“).
A little the situation changed. On a little table - a cup of coffee, the opened book, near a little table - the Jew in pile. Probably, the Jew prays. His face is turned towards the Wailing Wall. Time of a day prayer came. To a prayer two thousand years:
My God! Otverz my lips, and my lips will announce your praise.
Is blessed You, My God, My God ours,
God of our ancestors, Abraham, Isaak and Jacob,
God great, omnipotent and terrible,
God supreme, creating blessings,
the Tsar remembering merits of ancestors
and sending the savior to their descendants,
for the sake of the Name,
helping, rescuing and a board!
the Jew put the prayer book for the column rest from the remains of a Latin inscription. He, maybe, also knows Latin, but he is concerned by neither an inscription, nor a column. The main thing - it in Jerusalem, he says a prayer in glory of God.
... lift a banner to bring together exiles, bring together by
us together with four ends of the earth.
You are blessed, My God,
bringing together wanderers of the people, Israel.
the Jew raises eyes from the book, repeating words of a prayer. It - the live embodiment of belief of ancestors in the fact that Jews will return to the sacred places that they will meet in Jerusalem both in the following, and in the following, and next year.
Return graciously to your city of Jerusalem
and live in it according to the promise. Arrange to
it soon, today, forever, in it approve
and David`s throne soon.
the Inscription on a column - the certificate that here, this place, in Jerusalem, once was visited by Romans. They expelled Jews, disseminated through the Mediterranean, sold in slavery, just killed:
If I forget you, Jerusalem, - let will wither my right hand.
Stick my language to my throat if I do not remember you. .
of the Jew of the past is separated by a thin veil. She rises, centuries rush, rustle as paper, - a thin partition between the past and the present. And behind these rolls - the tired or killed legionary. It came with one of legions to conquer Jerusalem. Its spear pierces a roll - it is as if a reminder on all conquerors who sank into oblivion.
The Jew prays.
... and any evil yes will die instantly,
and all enemies of your people yes will be broken soon, and malicious eradicate
and exterminate, overthrow
and pacify in the near future.
Is blessed You, My God,
breaking enemies and humiliating malicious .
The Jew prays. And while the Jew prays - the people of Israel are living!
