Why oriental martial arts are popular?
the Western world seriously got acquainted with oriental martial arts at the end of the 19th century. Then it was dzyu - to dzyuets. In 50 - x years the fashion came to karate, at the end of 70 - x there was a boom of kuna - faugh, connected with Bruce Lee`s activity. Koreans advanced in the mass of taekwondo, nowadays Olympic discipline.
Fighting systems of Hugo - East Asia (and many of them are worth it) are popular, and and it is not necessary to speak about “samurai“ systems of fencing: “everyone knows“ that a katana - a naisovershenneyshy type of a cold weapon.
Why descendants of the Europeans who once conquered almost whole world with enthusiasm practice east systems? Really neither in Europe, nor in Russia there is no worthy alternative?
About Russia there are serious doubts. To fight - that here, as well as everywhere, were able. Fisticuffs as a national entertainment practiced widely, here only to how many - to the developed single combats it will not carry that. And the vast majority of modern “Russian“ styles are remakes. Perhaps, something was also borrowed from national dances, from traditional fisticuffs. But creation of full-fledged schools became possible thanking not these elements, but acquaintance of authors with sports (including east) systems.
Judging by total absence of certificates and traces, martial arts - i.e. systems - in Russia everything is was not. Ancient combatants (professionals) could not but be trained. But reached descendants unless later bayonet fight. But what we know about old bayonet fight - whether there was it specifically Russian? The existing grants of the end 19, the beginnings of 20 century represent the standard model of bayonet fight constructed on the principles of fencing by a sword. The tradition is available, but - European!
In Europe martial arts were. And we know about them not on guesses, and from the remained textbooks, fekhtbukh. The presented technicians do not concede east at all, and the earliest of the famous books belong to the 13th century. Perhaps, in the same course also fighting systems of Russia developed, but from - for lack of sources about it it is only necessary to guess.
Where the European martial arts and why they gave way to east got to? In the 19th century the Japanese fight was the exotic besides developed and quite effective. The main fighting schools of Japan - generation of a peace time. Since the 17th century when feudal wars stopped, the great number of Samurais remained not at business and devoted itself to physical and spiritual self-improvement, studying and systematization fighting the technician. The techniques of work with mentality developed in the Buddhism were attached to it. The methods created thus “were preserved“, martial arts closely intertwined with religious philosophy and practice, and the harmonous, formalized systems turned out. In principle, quite effective. Add to it exoticism (duels on swords in the 20th century!) ; an orientation on the spiritual improvement which got a response in the corresponding need of Europeans; well and competent public relations.
The European fighting systems did not concede to Japanese at all. Why “did not concede“ in past tense? Yes because traditional fighting systems of Japan had almost no external incentives for development (being formed in internal wars) and were preserved more than three hundred years ago. The European systems actively developed, adapted to new opponents and conditions. The weapon and tactics changed. To arrival of oriental martial arts in Europe traditional systems remained in a look or national types of fight unfamiliar to general public, or in the form of sports views (fight, boxing, fencing). Real fighting systems remained in the military environment, but also they died off. Or civilians as the first from the East systems hand-to-hand, a little demanded at military got were interested in oriental martial arts. Army weapon technicians borrowed Japanese Europeans: for example, bayonet fight. By the way, and boxing was appreciated in the east, just greedy for exotic white about it forgotten to be told.
The European combat sports - lineal heirs of traditional systems - reach perfection in the sphere, but uzkospetsializirovanna also have no “spiritual“, philosophical component. By the way, so was not always. A number of schools of fencing contained very difficult philosophical concepts. And the notorious “direct transfer“ which is nowadays considered as distinctive property of east schools was peculiar also to schools western. Just in Japan “direct transfer“ means that initially perfect knowledge was imparted without distortions through generations. That school, time having arisen, remained in original state (though it is applicable not always, but to the East svoystven antiquity cult, the Teacher`s cult). The European schools actively evolved, developed, knowledge was systematized. And the weapon changed … Also the hand-to-hand systems which are gradually becoming sports and received a new impulse to development were actively improved.
Unfortunately, in the course of evolution, which - that was lost. Combat sports solve narrow problems. East systems filled the released niches. And thanks to a variety, everyone can find necessary to it: applied, sports, improving, philosophical, religious aspects … And the mystery aura, sometimes and mystics, promotes popularity of east systems much. At the same time superordinary fighting qualities are attributed to them. Sometimes it corresponds to reality. But - sometimes.
Many traditional schools, for example, do not carry out sparrings, even with the educational weapon at all. A sports sparring - not always an indicator of level of the fighter - the application engineer. But presently in general it is difficult to check efficiency of applied single combat, and all statements for superiority of adherents are based that the school once was fighting. And it is valid, many east schools completely kept an ancient technical arsenal - only in the ancient time people with absolutely other psychology used it. What truly served them will be absolutely optional effective to our contemporary. And carefully guarded techniques of training obviously became outdated, but continue to be applied still.
Many east systems gained purely sports lines. And here they have no advantages over the western boxing, fight and fencing.
Other aspect - improvement. And there is no direct dependence between practice of east systems and life expectancy or level of health of adherents. The western athletes do not concede in it to east masters, and quite often surpass them in longevity and precisely in physical capacities.
What remains? Philosophical and esthetic components. Aura of secret and beautiful legends, plus feeling of participation to arts ancient soldiers. Beautifully advertized and esthetic, but the stranger in fact. Not incidentally in all Western world the clubs of reconstruction recreating and developing authentic European military and martial arts actively work. Which, at least, did not concede in due time to east and disappeared during natural evolution of society.
