GLONASS - the younger brother or the worthy answer of GPS?
Determination of the location were many centuries the whole art. Strikes how representatives of antique civilizations made thousand-mile voyages, arriving precisely to the destination. They at the same time used the receptions capable at times to strike the modern person. Whether the joke - to make long sea transition, being guided by the sun and to stars “approximately“?
It is considered that the first cards appeared in the 4th century B.C. Later the astrolabe, a quadrant, a sextant, then a compass, then already a gyroscope were invented. Thanks to efforts of geographers, astronomers and travelers an increasing number of details was plotted.
Many centuries people devoted life to development of cartography and navigation. And this knowledge was highly appreciated. Cardinally everything exchanged with approach of a space age - navigation became available to everyone in an every spot on the globe.
Conquest by the person of a near-earth space became a push for development of many field of science and equipment. Every second satellites transfer a huge number of information of different type: from results of photographing in various ranges of a certain site of the Earth`s surface and to the satellite television which became to habitual. A sin not to use it for the solution of a problem of determination of the location.
Several words about GPS …
of GPS (Global Positioning System) - system of satellite navigation. This system initially was developed by the Ministry of Defence of the USA thanks to which, the global Internet by the way, was issued.
The first satellite from 24, necessary for a covering of all Earth`s surface, was started in 1974, the last - in 1993. Now starts of advanced satellites which replace failed continue.
The system is used for providing with navigation data both civil, and military. And the accuracy of the data obtained by military, above that is provided with use of additional ranges and noiseproof coding of a signal.
GPS - receivers about which existence did not hear only lazy or representatives of the African tribes, use public channels of obtaining navigation information.
… and about GLONASS
Lagging behind Americans, under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR, in 1982 the first satellite of GLONASS system (Global Navigation Satellite System) was launched. Satellites in this system too 24, and their “park“ is constantly updated too.
Roskartografiya developed the corresponding cards, in Russia and abroad are issued GLONASS - receivers.
However on the accuracy of determination of coordinates of GLONASS concedes to the competitor. The reason and in number of the earth-based stations involved in system, and in coding of a signal, and in the accuracy of data efimeris and almanacs.
Brothers for ever?
that it is worth reckoning with GLONASS, the fact that some foreign and domestic companies release hybrid receivers - the devices capable to work at the same time with GLONASS and GPS satellites at the corresponding frequencies demonstrates, using the necessary format of a signal.
One of them - the Russian company Lexand. The Lexand SG navigator - 555 - nearly the first GLONASS / GPS the navigator (after several unsuccessful experiments) which anyone can buy in retail network.
The main advantages not only Lexand SG - 555, but also all hybrids are:
- higher speed of cold and hot start;
- high precision of determination of coordinates;
- high stability at reception of a signal.
Marketing mix? At all not. For determination of coordinate on the Earth`s surface and GPS, and GLONASS it is necessary to establish connection at least with four satellites! At the GPS receiver in an asset 24 satellites, at the GLONASS receiver - as much, and at a hybrid - the same Lexand SG - 555 - already 48. Nearly fifty!
It is no wonder that connection will be established with four any quickly enough.
Here we will remember also about stability of a signal. Buildings, features of a relief, a cloud and even foliage of trees can cover one or several satellites for a while. But it is simpler to be adjusted on others to hybrids, again - for the reason specified in the previous paragraph.
Same concerns also accuracy. Numerous sources claim:
- the more satellites sees the receiver, the coordinate will be defined more precisely;
- the GLONASS satellites in the northern hemisphere works better than GPS satellites from - for other of an orbit tilt angle.
Comments are excessive.
Alas, but on the accuracy and prevalence of the GLONASS devices - for the present “younger brother“. But it has every chance to become “the worthy answer“. And to us, users, it is necessary to enjoy accurate operation of hybrid receivers which combine the best qualities of both systems.
