Than Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilyevsky island is remarkable?

In St. Petersburg two Big prospectuses - on Vasilyevsky Island and on the Petrograd party. The one that on Petrograd, was created much later Vasileostrovsky, on the place of settlements for military and their families. It much well also cannot boast of historical or architectural sights. I want to tell about Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilyevsky island - one of the most beautiful and green in St. Petersburg.

And, perhaps, it one of the oldest prospectuses, practically - the age-mate of the city and Nevsky Avenue. And not each prospectus or the street can boast of such large number of monuments.

A little history

the Prospectus appeared on Vasilyevsky Island in 1710 in the form of a big glade through which there passed the road from just constructed mansion of the prince A. D. Menshikov that the prince could go on it to the coast of the Gulf of Finland. The architect Domenico Trezzini planning building of Vasilyevsky Island made this glade the trunk main. At first on it it was planned to dig a ship canal, but the idea was not carried out, and but, thanks to the initial plan, the prospectus turned out very wide - more than 85 meters. Since 1730 it was called the Big pershpektivny street (if you remember, Nevsky Avenue too first was called as the Main pershpektivny road, and then - Nevsky pershpektivy). At the time of Catherine II`s reign the Big pershpektivny street was arranged well, paved by a stone, and since 1780 began to be called already Bolshoy Avenue.

As well as many other streets of St. Petersburg, Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilyevsky island in Soviet period did not avoid renamings. After revolution of 1917 on Bolshoy Avenue administrative bodies of the area - a district committee of All-Union Communist Party (bolsheviks), regional council were placed, and the prospectus since 1918 began to bear a name of Friedrich Adler, one of leaders of the Vienna, and then Socialist working International. It is unclear, why his name was given to the prospectus in Petrograd. In 1922 Bolshoy Avenue changed the name again - became the prospectus of the Proletarian victory.

In 1944 returned to Bolshoy Avenue the historical name. During the Siege of Leningrad it strongly suffered, many buildings were destroyed at bombardments. And many wooden houses sorted on firewood. Now it is possible to see the only escaped wooden structure on Bolshoy Avenue - the house 77 - the one-storeyed case of children`s infectious diseases hospital No. 3, almost opposite the Slanting line. with

By the way, on Bolshoy Avenue, in the house No. 6, during blockade the girl Tanya Savicheva famous lived and wrote the diary to the whole world now.

In 1953 from the prospectus cleaned tram ways and asphalted. Later, at the beginning of 80 - x, the prospectus was prolonged to Nalichnaya Street, and on connection with it the area of Sea glory was created. Exactly there is a Marina of St. Petersburg, and near it pavilions of exhibition complex of Lenexpo.

It is possible to call Bolshoy Avenue the boulevard as on both sides from the carriageway there are green plantings with trees, bushes and flowers. The prospectus has three journeys for transport - one wide, on the center, for the transit movement, and two lateral, on both sides from avenues. Once private gardens were at the place of avenues, in 30 - e years of the XX century turned them into boulevards with pedestrian footpaths, with game playgrounds.

Walk according to the prospectus.

to make out fixedly and to estimate beauty of this or that street, it is necessary to pass on it slowly, on foot. It is necessary to take a new view of those places which already, it seems, hozhena - perekhozhena also are familiar for a long time. I very much love Vasilyevsky Island. Here, in the hostel on Detskaya Street, there passed student`s years, and on spring we quite often went on foot from there on Bolshoy Avenue and embankments to Truda Square. And the sunny summer day, having gone out of the trolleybus at the corner of the Cadet line, again I go to walk on Bolshoy Avenue. To the Area of Sea glory the prospectus was stretched on 4 kilometers, quite surmountable distance for a foot walk. It is known that perpendicularly the prospectus is crossed by streets - lines, from 1 - y to 27 - y and the Braid.

At the very beginning of the prospectus the Lutheran Church of St. Catherine constructed in 1768 - 1771 on the project of the architect Yu. M. Felten draws attention. It is deystuyushchy, except church services here regularly there take place concerts of an organ music. For 2 - y and 3 - y lines, in the ancient building No. 9, the Residence of the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Thailand is placed.

On the opposite side there are ancient malls, always they were called Andreevskimi. It was the St. Petersburg`s first Gostiny dvor (1789 - 1790). Now part of buildings the sign “Vasileostrovsky Market“, and over other building unites an inscription - “The Andreevsky yard“.

Opposite to Andreevsky ranks, at the corner of the prospectus and 6 lines, is the well-known Andreevsky cathedral, and the church of Three Prelates standing behind it. And on the small square closing the pedestrian zone the obelisk put to 300 - to the anniversary of establishment of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called rises.

At the corner with the 9th line the gray monumental building of Institute of high-molecular connections of the Russian Academy of Sciences built in 1956-62 on B. M. Serebrovsky and P. I. Trubnikov`s project in style of “A Stalin empire style“ rises.

On Bolshoy Avenue remain two monuments to V. I Lenin. One, works of sculptors V. V. Kozlov and A. V. Kryzhanovskaya, is established in 1930 at the house No. 55 - administration of Vasileostrovsky district. The second, works of the sculptor V. B. Pinchuk is established in 1934, before a chapel of Pokrovsk hospital. The hospital bore a name of Lenin earlier.

At the corner 19 lines are the operating chapel of the Prelate Spyridon of Trimythous from the Church of St. Catherine located in Academy of Arts. Further, behind 21 lines, in the house 73 there is a fire brigade of Vasileostrovsky district, and it is faced by a monument to “A feat of firefighters of Leningrad“ of the sculptor Leon Lazarev.

Behind 24 and 25 lines, on the former Havana field, on the place of a dump and the boggy waste ground in 30 - e years of the XX century the fine Palace of culture of S. M. Kirov, long time remaining the biggest in Leningrad was constructed. The palace was one of favourite vacation spots, had a fine dance hall which called Marble for its finishing, movie theater, library, a set of rooms for occupations of on-stage performance groups.

Near the palace broke Vasileostrovets park. In park the summer dance floor, a summer platform, pavilions worked. Now in park there are a playground and small cafe, but there is no platform already dancing and. But on the main avenue on November 9, 2010 opened a fine monument to the artist and public figure N. K. Roerich.

Around the Palace of Kirov lately there are disputes of his owners or owners, the palace is not in the best possible way. Three multi-storey buildings are erected on the square in front of the Palace, and before them in 2006 the monument to the first mayor Sankt - Petrburga is delivered to A. A. Sobchak, and the square received his name.

Already close and termination of the prospectus. Behind the territory of Pokrovsk hospital there are no Lines, and there are streets - the Nursery, Shevchenko, Havana, Opochinina, Cash. On the left side of the Prospectus there are industrial enterprises. From ancient constructions the Church of an icon of the Pardoning Mother of God constructed in 1889 - 1898 in the Byzantine style by architects V. A. Kosyakov and D. K. Prussak remained here.

Walk according to the prospectus at Morskoy Slavy Square with Marina, cases of Lenexpo and the wide Nalichnaya Street leaving to the right comes to an end. Here it is spacious, it is a lot of flowers on beds, the beautiful square is issued. It is possible to have a rest and return to the downtown on public transport.
