Whether just to choose the reader? E-books on the basis of E - ink

Having been attracted since the childhood to books, once I set to myself the task to choose “eReader“. And, as it appeared, a task quite difficult. After receiving results of the first search query I understood: among the models presented at the market it is possible to choose optimum, but before it is necessary to touch a set of options...

Why E - ink? Yes because books which screen is constructed with use of this technology are safe for sight. Are safe because do not radiate light but only it is reflected that for our distressful eyes - all the same that reading from paper.

Key requirements to the reader at me was only two:

support of the main formats of e-books, including Word documents (expansion *. doc);

a possibility of reliable protection of the screen (very much negative memoirs remained with me after literally in a month of operation at the reader of one my good acquaintance the screen - the main part of the device was incidentally damaged).

What the market modern to us bears?

Variety, variety and once again variety! Thanks to a powerful and competent advertizing campaign, dominates in an infoprostranstvo of the CIS countries of PocketBook . According to mass media, the share of sales of this firm in the market of the CIS countries makes about 40% of all eReaders.

the Firm can brag of both a wide choice of readers, and high quality of their “chordate“ performance and the software, and attractive design, and worthy technical characteristics. Cannot brag only of one - low cost.

The main competitors of PocketBook - also widely presented at the market Lbook, Inch, the Alphabet, Sony, ERGO, Digma, Onyx, a certain Aychitalka and, of course well-known Kindle .

About necessary, important and not really …

the Size of the screen of most of readers of various producers fluctuates within from 5 to 7 inches (6 of 8 PocketBook models, the majority of LBook, Sony, all books of the Alphabet, ERGO). Their permission - generally 800 on 600. Only few (PocketBook Pro 902, 903, Lbook eReader A9, Digma q1000) sport the big screen - 9,7 inches. Lbook have the screen with the resolution of 1024 na768, and of PocketBook - 1200 on 825 . And here PocketBook is in the lead, having presented 2 large-format models which on TTH surely bypass competitors. Though, 5 - or 6 - it is quite enough inch screen for comfortable reading, 9,7 - already for “gourmets“.

The extent of the built-in memory fluctuates from 128 MB to 4 Gbytes . Practical all readers are on friendly terms with SD or microSD memory cards. Of course, there are also exceptions, for example, old minimalist, but quite cheap, the reader of Sony Reader PRS - 300. The screen and memory is what important and is necessary for the user.

Another matter - “delicacy“ - various lotions which complete readers.

It and modules of a wireless communication WiFi (PocketBook Pro 602, 603, 902, 903, Lbook eReader V60, Inch S6t, Onyx Boox A60, the ALPHABET of N618, Sony of PRS-950, Digma q1000, Aychitalka), of Bluetooth (PocketBook Pro 602, 603, 902, 903), 3G modules (PocketBook Pro 603, 903, Lbook eReader V60/optionally/, Sony of PRS-900, 950, Kindle 3, DX Graphite), touch screens (PocketBook Pro 603, 903, Inch A6s, the Alphabet of N618, Sony of PRS-350, 650, 950, Aychitalk), powerful (for such devices) processors which, by the way, allow to play unpretentious shooters (PocketBook 360 Plus), and even radio (Digma q1000). Whether they here are necessary - a question.

The person thinking of purchase of the reader usually has the computer and Internet access therefore advantages of existence of a wireless communication are practically leveled. The touch screen - too on the fan. Many consciously do not take a sensor, preferring classical buttons.

But if reading these lines, you understand that, for example, WiFi is simply necessary for you, can safely pay attention to above-mentioned models.

the Constant problem of the choice

as a result of long researches my choice stopped on two applicants. Them steel Alphabet of N516 and of PocketBook 360 Plus . Someone will tell supposedly “not the ideal choice“, but before decision-making I re-read many responses and took many devices in hands. IMHO, is the most worthy of the books which are not burdened with excess lotions.

The complete set of both models includes a rigid cover (the Alphabet of N516) and a cover (PocketBook 360 Plus) for protection of the screen . The alphabet does not read files *. doc, but it is remediable a reinsertion. This reader is equipped with 3,5 mm the socket for earphones and reads a MP3 while of 360 Plus of this pleasant feature it is deprived, but is equipped with unnecessary (personal opinion!!!) WiFi .

At one of forums read that the PocketBook 360 Plus screen is one generation more senior, than at the Alphabet, but visually did not notice it, and on the websites of producers this nuance is not covered. Screens identical both on permission, and by the size.

Readers support different types of memory cards. PocketBook 360 Plus - MicroSD, N516 - SD .

The N516 processor is inferior to PocketBook 360 Plus a little . And it is not nonsense as many think. This indicator will have an effect when the reader begins “to digest“ the big archived book of the fb2 format.

The following item of comparison - design. Perhaps PocketBook 360 Plus also looks more accurately, but for me the design costs on the last place. Especially the Alphabet in a cover is more similar to the book or, say, to the daily log.

Each eReader has shortcomings and advantages, approximately at the identical price . I will not expatiate on the choice that evil tongues did not accuse me of advertizing of the specific producer and this choice was not scarified. whether

to be to readers at school?

That interestingly and adequately mentions: the PocketBook company plans to start several pilot projects on equipment by the 9,7 - inch readers of PocketBook Pro 902, 903 of some schools in Russia and in Ukraine . Projects are realized with assistance of the government. Electronic textbooks are for this purpose already developed.

A laudable initiative, only many contradictions it causes. As the person sane, but not connected with an education system, I see following “discrepancies“ and shortcomings:

High cost of the device . Who will buy them for school students if the project passes“? State? Doubtfully. Parents? Obviously. Present their pleasure when they learn that for continuation of training of the child it is necessary to buy the book for 400 US dollars.

High probability of damage of the reader to a schoolbag . Remember only as children rush on school during changes. Unless it is interesting to them that in a backpack the very expensive electronic thingummy lies?!

with of Model which take part in experiment equipped WiFi (PocketBook Pro 902, 903) and 3G (903) . Whether at many schools WiFi an access point is established? Irrespective of who will pay introduction of such textbooks unless there will be no it an unjustified overpayment? Or for schools Lite will release versions? If let out - it it is not mentioned anywhere.

Loss of skills of work with the book . Usual, paper, shabby, heavy book. At emergence of need to return to the previous page, it will not turn out to put pages a finger, to read what needs and to be turned back. It will be necessary to thumb through pages on the screen, doing “gap“ in perception. And dictionaries of a foreign language? When we went to school, it was necessary to potter with the dictionary, and even with several, to look for the translation of the word. Many say that it substantially positively influences storing of words. Modern school students of problems do not know

- tired out the word in the electronic translator and received the answer. As a result the task is performed, but knowledge in the head settled a minimum.

However, according to PocketBook, the number of the damaged screens simply scanty - 0,03% of total of sales. And it thanks to the glass protecting the screen and competent assembly. Perhaps just these books will also survive in severe conditions of modern school. Time will show
