Comfort zone: how to expand it?
What is a comfort zone? Such place on the planet where to us it is good and cozy? No. It is the special range of actions, events and circumstances in which it is possible to call our state comfortable. To work in a comfort zone - means, to do something habitual, pleasant or interesting, to carry out only what does not cause any unpleasant feelings (for example, fatigue or impatience).
At each person the zone of comfort has certain sizes and captures the different number of actions. For example, some people with pleasure do exercises in the mornings, for them it is the same habit how to brush teeth or to wash up hands before food - morning warm-up is included into their zone of comfort. But a significant amount of people of such habit has no, for them the morning exercises are a terrible problem, they should pull out literally by the scruff themselves from a bed and to carry out ridiculous exercises, with pleasure yawning. Charging is far outside their zone of comfort.
Besides a zone of comfort there is one more area about which it is necessary to tell is an area of possible actions. It much more widely also covers almost everything that we are able to make. And any action can pass from one area into another, respectively, and the zone of comfort can either extend, or be narrowed.
It is easy to check it: do exercises during certain time in the mornings, and it will become your habit. It is so possible to arrive with any action … theoretically.
In practice we more often see absolutely other picture. One fine day we make the decision something to do, for example, to learn 10 English words in day. The first couple of days we diligent perform these operations though we and not really like similar occupation, but in the beginning we are helped out by enthusiasm, however, over time its stock comes to an end, and studying of 10 words turns into the real torture - we left the zone of comfort. There pass some more days, and noble occupation rushes.
Or other example when it is necessary not to introduce some habit, and to make one specific action. For example, you have an examination soon, you could begin to prepare in advance and to gradually sort all questions. But once you sit down at a desktop and to open a notebook with lectures, search of justifications begins: examination not soon, I will learn it then, there are not enough my lectures etc. And instead of beginning though something to do, we postpone for later, usually for tomorrow. So occurs day by day until postponement for tomorrow is impossible since tomorrow examination.
What to do with it? How to overcome that discomfort which causes new occupation?
For a start it is necessary to understand something.
If we speak about introduction of a habit, whether it be morning exercises, studying of 10 English words or a ban on meal after seven o`clock in the evening, it is necessary to remember that after an exit from a comfort zone we will need to 21 days in order that new occupation turned into a habit. Three weeks of continuous actions - and your zone of comfort will become wider. The key phrase - “ of continuous actions “. If you give a weak point and pass one day, then you can begin everything with the beginning.
One more important point. Remember when you go out of the warm bus on a frost in the winter, it seems to you that on the street is much colder, than shows a thermometer. In the first several seconds you feel the sharpest discomfort. But there pass not enough time and the frost becomes quite tolerant. The same happens to new occupation - the first several minutes you feel the strongest attack of laziness, apathy and feverishly begin to look for justifications to postpone business at least for couple of seconds: “Oh, I will go - I will give myself some tea, and now it is time to check e-mail, absolutely forgot to call the old girlfriend etc.“. Here at this moment it is important to appeal to internal feeling of discipline and responsibility and to overcome itself.
At this stage - when you leave a comfort zone, you have several assistants who will help to cope with unpleasant feelings at the beginning of a way.
Your first assistant is enthusiasm . It very much helps, especially at the beginning. But the enthusiasm as the battery - without recharge it quickly enough comes to an end.
Our second assistant is the letter of reminder . We very easily can agree with ourselves if the decision is made in an oral form. You want to cease to eat food after seven o`clock in the evening, but nevertheless approach the refrigerator. Your consciousness gives an alarm signal: It “is impossible“. But right there the internal voice acquitting you sounds: “Today last time, I very much want to eat, and tomorrow I will not be any more“. When all this occurs only in your consciousness, probability that you will curtail from the planned way and will give in to a temptation, is very big. And now present that you approach the refrigerator, and the note hangs on it: “I promise myself not to eat anything after seven o`clock in the evening“. In this case it will be far more difficult to agree with himself. Even if at the first moment decide what can be begun and from tomorrow, then the second view of a note will be enough to put what you were already going to take a bite back in the refrigerator of. We do not like to violate promises.
And now most important. You will not be able to expand the zone of comfort until you find the suitable reason.
From there is a simple rule: to make something, being outside your zone of comfort, find for this purpose the reason .
And the task is more difficult, the farther it from your zone of comfort, the more significantly has to be the reason inducing you to perform unpleasant operation.
Why you want to do exercises in the mornings? To be healthy? But also now you are not ill. You will not be motivated by a condition of own health until with it everything is all right. Better to feel and be full of energy? Can be. Remembering successful experience when you perfectly felt after morning exercises, you will always want to be vigorous and full of strength.
There are small cunnings allowing to increase reason weight.
Tell about your invention as it is possible for bigger number of people. Not important, what reaction from them will follow, you anyway win. If to support you and will tell what you the good fellow, so to hold, then at the critical moment you remember it and will think approximately following: “Well as I can bring these people, they believe that I am capable of it!“. If, on the contrary, you are told that it is too difficult task and you will hardly cope with it, then in thoughts there will be absolutely other image: “Within my powers what I undertook, and now I will prove it“.
You can safely “urge on“ the consciousness. Brightly imagine end successful result, you have to want to receive it.
Take yourself “on a bet“ and “on poorly“. For example: let`s argue that I will make one push-up more today; or 10 words will be learned by any school student, and me what, poorly, perhaps?
All these small cunnings can well help, but you will not be able to deceive long yourself, finally, when you once again decide to perform “on a bet“ the operation which is outside a comfort zone, your consciousness will tell you: “Yes I know your tricks, will not give a ride any more“.
Once again I will repeat to go beyond a comfort zone, you have to have a good reason. All other tricks have only auxiliary character and cannot serve as reliable tools.
The zone of comfort reminds training of muscles. When you come to be engaged to the gym for the first time, next day all muscles hurt, you begin to hate steps, sometimes even to sit down on a chair painfully. But if you are persistent, then after a while pain disappears, the organism adapts to new loadings, you become stronger. However it is worth stopping occupations, muscles will begin to weaken, and you will come to what began with.
