Rubens, “Orpheus and Eurydice“. To find and lose?
Orpheus are a singer, it had so magic voice, he so sang that “trees and rocks started moving“ (Apollodorus, Mythological library).
“... To it the wild animals fascinated by a charm of sounds of its songs gathered“. “Orpheus surpassed by beauty of the poems of all former to him“. “... Those nightingales, whose nests are at Orpheus`s grave, sing more with pleasure and more loudly, than in other places“. “Who dealt with poetry issues, that knows that all anthems of Orpheus are very short and that it is a little of all of them. On beauty of verses they take the second place after Homer`s anthems, but much more surpass them by depth of the religious feeling and a divine intuition“. (Pavsany, the Description of Hellas)
the Forest nymph Eurydice became Orpheus`s wife. As well as all nymphs, she spent time in amusements with same as it, nymphs. But once it stepped on a snake.
It would seem, the nymph has to know about all dangers which can overtake her. What forced it to forget about care? On it Virgil has an answer in “Georgikakh“: it appears, some shepherd began to pursue Eurydice (he thought that she wild, that is belongs to nobody). Eurydice ran away in fear, she wanted to rush to the river to get rid of the persecutor.
This shepherd did not remain unpunished for attempt to seduce the nymph - at him all bees died (probably, the shepherd in combination was also a beekeeper). He asks for the help the mother, the river queen that it opened to it the reason of misfortunes. Careful mummy sends it to a veshchun behind a solution. And veshchun opens for this unaccomplished tyrant that on him the damnation of the husband of Eurydice lies:
... When ran away from you to rush to the river,
this Woman, to death fateful, did not uvidat
in the thick of a grass, near legs, a huge snake priberezhny.
Probably, her girlfriends very much loved and the death was both unexpected, and unusual:
Choruses of contemporaries of dryads were announced a cry of top
of Mountains here, then strongholds Rhodope broke into tears. Further veshchun tells
It moderated a grief of love tortoise lira,
Sang, a joy - the wife, about you at a wave, lonely, Sang
at the birth of day and sang at its fading.
Eurydice got in Hades, to a kingdom of the dead where the tsar of this kingdom Hades and his wife Persefona dominated. Orpheus so loved the Eurydice that he after her death went down in an underground kingdom and asked gods to return it life (further - quotes from Ovidiya`s “Metamorphoses“):
If the rumor about former stealing is not false - you too
were Connected by Lyubov!
These words - a reminder the Aida that he fell in love once with Persefona, from love stole it and took with itself, in an underground kingdom.
Seius of horror a full vale,
of Chaos a chasm I ask also silence of a desert kingdom:
Again my Eurydice braid a short fate!
Orpheus does not ask gods to recover Eurydice forever:
Not on absolutely, for that term which is released by it the nature:
All of us at you debtors; having hesitated short time, whether
Earlier whether later - everything in a shelter we hurry uniform.
All of us aspire here, here the house our the last; you are two
human races otsel you operate a kingdom extensive.
And it: only its put years will ripen, you Will have
under the power: I ask returns only for a while.
his singing was so penetrating that,
of Vneml as he says how he zyblt strings in a consent,
of Soul bloodless tears were spilled by streams. masters of an underground kingdom changed
I to the rules:
... and already neither the queen - the spouse, nor the lord of underworlds
of entreaty can execute.
Hades and Persefona agreed to release Eurydice, but provided that Orpheus will never look back until it leaves an underground kingdom. Young spouses leave from the Aida:
Here in silence mute climb up an inclined plane both
to the Dark footpath; the abrupt, dense wrapped-up haze.
On Rubens`s cloth “Orpheus and Eurydice“ two young people leave from elderly, sitting on an eminence. Near them below - a three-headed dog, behind them - a gloom and flashes of fire. Young people are Orpheus and Eurydice. Elderly - masters of a kingdom of the dead from where there is no road on this world, it is Hades - god of this kingdom - and Persefona - his wife. The three-headed dog the Cerberus guards an exit.
Orpheus takes away Eurydice, and he is forbidden to look back. But look at his eyes: he endeavors to see what occurs behind it whether there is it Eurydice. To it it is terrible, to him it is painful: he does not see it. Also has to go forward, otherwise it will not leave a kingdom of the dead.
Eurydice on a face has a serenity - neither alarm, nor grief: Orpheus restores her to life.
Hades is restless. His look is turned upward as though it wants to see some sign from above: at all the power it is not confident that Orpheus will grant the desire and will return itself(himself) Eurydice.
Persefona - all in black, a mourning cape on the head, eyes are full of tears. It seems, she has a presentiment of the tragic end of an adventure of Orpheus.
At a three-headed dog of the Cerberus two heads are quiet, and the third, seemingly, under impression of songs howls though Orpheus`s voice does not sound any more.
The picture is painted in gloomy tones: bodies do not shine bright paints, they are mertvenna. Even fire spolokh behind the back of the Aida look faintly.
Orpheus was close to an exit from an underground kingdom, but suddenly it was left by feeling that Eurydice nearby:
And there were already they from border terrestrial nearby,
But, uboyas that it did not lag behind, and in thirst to see,
Full of love, it turned a look, and the spouse - disappeared!
Eurydice returned to a kingdom of the dead:
Hands were stretched by him forward, embraces mutual are looked for,
But in vain - one whiff is enough unfortunate, Death having again learned
, she did not expostulate on the spouse.
And on what to expostulate it? Or unless on what is loved? the Voice the last “forgive“ to
sounded, but it almost did not reach
of Hearing it; and it was turned back in monastery of the dead.
Orpheus Lost Eurydice. Lost from - for fear to lose...
