Thinking in martial arts: how we study?
Let`s talk about some features of thinking and perception of the world peculiar (dalena) to east mentality in comparison with western, in relation to such area as martial arts.
Being trained in traditional east fighting systems, many face a problem of basic misunderstanding of what is demanded by instructors, a strangeness for our mentality of that approach which is supposed a training technique. Here also instructors should adapt a technique, doing it convenient for perception of the European. It does not become better and it is not worse - just another, perhaps, even than not less effective, but at the same time the essence of system changes.
In the West the main loading at perception and assimilation of new lays down on consciousness. Training goes through understanding and judgment according to the scheme: demonstration - an explanation - performance by the pupil - correction of mistakes. The same principles in general are applicable also to actions in everyday life.
East scheme of training is under construction differently: demonstration - repetition by the pupil - performance in the conditions complicating the wrong actions. Or repeated performance to “understanding“ - up to a state more precisely when trained “itself feels“ as it is necessary. That is training goes not so much through understanding the pupil of what he does how many through creation of conditions in which he is forced to act truly.
For example, blows are struck with legs over a bench that forces trained in the beginning to take out a knee and only then to straighten a leg in blow, and also to return back a leg, without “dropping“ it before itself in order to avoid blow against an obstacle. Blows the weapon it is possible to train in the doorway interfering broad amplitude swings. Or a method of limit loading of muscles to achieve their reflex relaxation.
At trainings it is often possible to hear something it seems “it is necessary to make one thousand times, and you will understand everything“. And this is true, here only not any European is capable to sustain time, necessary for occurrence of “understanding“. Especially as not each instructor finds time to explain what he tries to reach this or that exercise, by the principle “do ten thousand times“.
In a number of east schools the logical understanding the adherent of the principles of creation of movements, combinations of elements etc. is not supposed at all. That is fighters are able to conduct a battle and own system of the preparation allowing to train the next generation, but to here explain how they act and why quite so, for them can be difficult. And it is not a narrowly professional question as can seem. Distinctions in a mentality in general: can prevail or logical, analytical type of judgment of reality when everything perceived in the beginning “is displayed on components“ from which then again integral and consistent, though a little artificial picture of the world is formed; or the world is perceived directly, wholly, without attempts to artificially isolate from it separate elements. And training in equipment can begin not with simple movements, elements, and with more natural (though more difficult) combinations.
We spoke about a method of statement of the trainee in the conditions compelling it it is correct to work. By the same principle it is possible to replace skill of action with skill of the purpose: for example, to give the task “overturn the partner capture for a leg“ - and the pupil`s body itself will find optimum provisions and ways of the application of efforts. The basic that disturbs at such intuitive approach - persistent attempts engaged “to think“.
Example from life: the pupil starts working off of blows and carries out exercise, in general, correctly, but with a margin error which (on belief of the instructor) he easily could correct. The pupil interrupted “in the middle of free flight“ attentively listens to the explanation and honestly tries to consider it, but the stop already occurred - and not only on the physical plan, but also in brains. And here trained does not beat any more, and constantly scrolls in the head the thoughts (and even experiences) concerning “correctness“ of the actions. It is included not in process, and in the reflections about it. The blow vanishes at once. The new circle of a reflection begins. Others - inclined to doubt itself - in general stop: “It is impossible to me, probably, still early“.
The same effect was observed when between two occupations the pupil managed to communicate to the acquaintance having higher level of preparation, who scarified it “a beating manner“. And what can be a manner? ! He just began to study! And it is not the thoughtless teenager subject to others influences, but the serious adult man who is quite trusting to the instructor. Sometimes you think: “Devil take it, it is better not to climb at all, let does as it turns out. It Poobvykntsya - then we will correct (of course if a mistake not basic)“.
“Dumanye“ breaks the natural course of the process based rather on feeling of correctness or abnormality. Here it is important to trust in own intuition and just to follow in a stream of images, movements, impulses. Discretization is not peculiar to such mentality, action is perceived (the word “skhvatyvaniye“ will be pertinent) as a complete image which inseparably included both a task, and desirable result, and a way of its realization. Eventually, the task has to as if by itself, to come naturally to decision level at once. Practical methods of training or push the pupil to search of decisions, own, natural to it, or create the conditions which are bringing most closer it to the required formal action. We already described exercise on a blow operating time at a wall. In this task it is quite difficult to execute blow incorrectly; the body spontaneously finds the necessary provisions, and it is necessary only to correct some details.
Distinction in a mentality is inseparably linked with features of language. The “western“ approach to training is similar to stage-by-stage training in language: from studying of letters (elements) to their folding in words (the elementary sheaves like “block - blow“), further to drawing up phrases and offers (a combination of sheaves and elements) and to dialogue (free fight).
But also other way is possible. The child, mastering the speech, does not learn the rule and does not learn the word. And the adult, having appeared in the foreign-language environment, masters someone else`s speech not according to the textbook, and from inevitable attempts of communication with native speakers. Whether many of us will manage to explain why quite so, but not differently offers of the native speech are under construction? Are sure that it in power only to experts, however most of people nevertheless tell more or less correctly.
Many cultures of the East use the hieroglyphic letter forming essentially other, more figurative and complete way of perception. Really, there is no accurate logicality habitual to us and unambiguity, breakdown on signs, words and phrases. And in martial art: having mastered not words, but a manner, way of action, we can pass to free creativity where the initial image only sets a certain main line. The main complexity against which the majority rests - need to work intuitively, having trusted in the body, not thinking.
Almost each of us sometime fought. Unless at these moments you thought of equipment, of how it is better to strike? Most likely, no. You just beat there where the opponent was open, and it is probable, beat strongly and precisely. That is we have a certain ability by nature. So why, having come to training, we first become such clumsy? Yes because from us try to achieve the movement, correct from the point of view of this system, - and we are ready to refuse from the ability nature which is already given us instead of the promised ability “it is correct to do“. Trying to work in the unusual way, we begin to think and analyze, losing at the same time natural “fluidity“ of thoughts and corporal grace.
We do not try to prove superiority of “east“ way over “western“ or on the contrary. Now, during a domination era of “universal systems“, it is possible and it is necessary to combine flexibly both of these approaches, with gratitude making use of all range of the experience which is saved up by ancestors. The choice of a technique depends as on the personality trained (to one better one, to another another), and on character of a solvable task. Generally, “the conditional (formalized) school“ is much more exacting to a business formality, to correctness, following to canons without what transfer and preservation of traditions are inconceivable. It concerns in general any formalized exercises.
If trained it is not necessary to take examination in equipment if it is faced by especially practical purpose (we will tell, to learn to fight) is an occasion to reflect whether there is a sense to break the initial manner of the movement inherent in it as to the person in general and as to this specific individual with the unique features of a constitution and plasticity.
