Rubens, “Heracles at Omfala“. For what such punishment?
Heracles. Mythical character. The person that is called the mere mortal, but occurs from gods. His ancestors Perseus - Alkey - Amfitrion - Alkmena - Zeus.
Alkmena met with Zeus not at own will, Zeus deceived her. When to it was impatient to oversleep with it, it accepted an appearance of her husband (and to enjoy to the full extent, extended days three times).
Result - Heracles: “It was at first sight possible to tell about it is mute that he is Zeus`s son. It was growth in four elbows, eyes sparkled fire. He always hit the mark whether he shot a bow or threw a dart“ (Apollodorus, Mythological library, the book 2).
The majority of sources says that Heracles made 12 feats. But... Many years ago Yu. Ryurikov`s book “Three inclinations“ - extraordinary fascinating review of love literature from antiquity was published up to now. And there is a mention that Heracles made one more feat, the thirteenth: it in one night deprived of virginity of 50 maidens (isn`t that so, not poorly?).
The situation was so: he was called to kill a lion who devoured cows. The lion was killed, and the owner of cattle paid off Heracles with sexual services of fifty daughters - virgins (if they were given birth by one mother - what there was an age difference between the first and the last?) .
Not really remote consequences of such payment - children. What they were born - is not reported, but the seed was excellent. Except for violent character of the father. What is interesting: in centuries we were reached by names of all these fifty girls and names of their children!
After this adventure Heracles received punishment - to perform 12 most difficult works, impracticable or deadly. He made it, and then he was sold in Omfale`s slavery. The slavery lasted 3 years.
Rubens`s picture “Heracles and Omfala“. Anything solemn, anything special. Usual family scene: the angry old woman something mutters and shows a thread, the huge man sits before it with a distaff and a thread (for some reason almost undressed), above it there is a beauty, on it from clothes - one rag which hardly covers its delights, and a wolf skin through a shoulder. This here the beauty delays the healthy fellow for an ear very playful expression. The man screws up the face - but no more than that. Nearby - two children which with the opened mouths watch what occurs. The girl has tambour, the boy has some similarity of onions.
The man is Heracles, the beauty - Omfala, the queen of Lydia (the state which once was located on part of modern Turkey), the boy and the girl - their children. And the old woman - it is probable, from the queen`s servants. Here the old woman also informs that Heracles worse than ever spins, she shows on a thread which he spryal. And the queen in punishment tears up the slave (and at the same time the father of her children) for an ear. Tenderly, but it is sick. And he suffers because he is her slave. It was sold in slavery for murders (yes, not for one, and for several!) .
Beyond the scope of a picture and outside a legend there was a question: how such athlete suffered captivity, slavery three years? Moreover behind female occupation? It is necessary to tell that Heracles was loveful, in each district (or almost in everyone) he married and left behind children. What could attach him to Omfala so? Probably, her hyper sexuality. It exhausted it so that at it it was not necessary even to roll out forces a thread properly!
Eventually Heracles became free and after captivity a lot what did. Its force was demanded, and to the people he killed much.
Heracles finished the terrestrial way tragicly. Ness`s centaur intended to steal his wife. Heracles wounded a centaur, and Ness (such cattle!) wetted the poisonous blood a rag.
That blood picked up Ness: “No, I will die revenged!“ - Spoke
about himself and the
clothes covered with blood Gave to the production, - as love a feeling love spell.
(Ovidy, “Metamorphoses“) he managed to whisper
I about it to Heracles`s wife. Probably, this monster it was not put out and not turned because to the next events there passed a lot of time.
When rumors about what Heracles allegedly changes reached his wife, she gave him a bewitching shirt - thought that it will force Heracles to be true. But poison which was in centaur blood, caused intolerable pain. Attempts to remove a deadly poison were not successful.
“It is impossible to hesitate: to break off killing endeavors a shirt,
But, being torn off itself, tears off also skin. It is opposite to Say
! That to a body it sticks - it is impossible to break! -
Or meat shreds bares also powerful bones.
As if iron when you ship heated in water,
Blood at the sufferer hisses and boils from ardent poison. the suffering does not have
of the Measure“. (Ovidy, “Metamorphoses“)
of Flour were so intolerable
that Heracles put a fire and burned itself.
Zeus who could not allow death of the son gave it immortality, its began to honor as god. Pavsany writes that in Amiklakh (the city in Peloponesse) on the throne of work of Batikl devoted to Apollo there were reliefs with The Labours of Hercules: fight against centaurs, against giants, against a hydra, against a dog from the Aida, with a lion, with Akheloyem... Besides, in Greece there was a set of temples, sanctuaries, Heracles`s altars.
In the city of Sikion (it was in the territory of present Greece) there was a marble sculpture of Heracles trimmed only from hips, and the lower part “was similar to quadrangular columns germ“.
Heracles that is called left marks in world culture and literature. Very remote communications are sometimes traced. Let`s take Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin: “All of us studied gradually something and as - nibud...“ But from his words can draw a conclusion that it knew both Latin, and Ancient Greek, read Homer (and not only) in the original:
“Latin got out of fashion nowadays:
So if to tell the truth to you, It knew
enough on - Latin, That epigraphs to sort
to Talk about Yuvenale,
at the end of the letter to deliver to “vale“,
Yes remembered though not without sin,
From “Eneida“ two verses“. by
When published the translation of “Illiada“ executed by Nikolay Ivanovich Gnedich, Pushkin responded on it:
“I hear the stopped sound of the divine Hellenic speech; great a shadow I feel
of the Aged man the confused soul“.
the Aged man great - Homer, the author of “Illiada“ and “Odyssey“. Pushkin appreciated verses of the ancient poet as elevated poetry, and Gnedich transmitted not only spirit of the original, but also its beauty.
And it is not all of the fact that brought ancient in Pushkin`s creativity. The fairy tale “Tsar Nikita“ is cast by the thirteenth feat of Heracles:
“The tsar Nikita lived once
Idly, cheerfully, richly,
did not create good, the evil,
But its earth blossomed.
The tsar worked gradually,
Ate, drank, prayed to god
I from different mothers
Begot forty daughters“.
(Why forty? Most likely, from - for the size: the word “fifty“ did not lay down at line. By the way, by one version of the myth of all daughters one mother, and on the second - different gave rise!) And adventures of one of heroes of the fairy tale come to an end almost according to the myth.
Possibly, Semyon Altov is familiar with ancient authors too. He wrote the humoresque about two sights of the city: about an oak under which Alexander Sergeyevich, and about Heracles`s statue sat. The city authorities, having come across incidentally a statue, instructed to clean man`s advantage at a statue - not to seduce the people. Then instructed to restore removed - to meet as it is necessary guests from Greece.
Greeks saw a statue and took offense! The authorities to smooth down an embarrassment, requested data on proportions in Athens and received them - in Greek. The local sculptor long conjured, having covered with a panel and when the statue was opened, the people in bulk went to look at this miracle. The authorities at first instructed everything again to close, and then secretly to dig on a cemetery. On a belt. That Heracles`s cult did not revive.
Actually Heracles`s cult never stopped: each soldier, each boy would like to be put as Heracles, to be strong as Heracles. But, as one of my interlocutors noticed, addition still can be recreated, and all the rest - is hardly achievable.
It is possible to add - in the same way as such sweet slavery.
