What Petrozavodsk begins with?
Theatre, as we know, begin with a hanger. And here city? Or any other large settlement. What we begin the first acquaintance to them with? In most cases … From the station! And how differently? To them, these settlements, somehow it is necessary to reach.
Deer it is, of course, much better than planes, steamships, engines, but … Where they in the same Petrozavodsk? Here in Vorkuta - yes, is. And in the capital of Karelia … Hey - at - at! Shout - do not shout, all - uselessly. Was not, is not present and will not be, probably. Though North, but not climate to deer here.
Therefore the one who comes to Petrozavodsk first of all gets to the station. In most cases - on railway. River works only during navigation on Lake Onega - from May to October. And the long-distance passenger traffic the air and motor transport is so insignificant in comparison with the railroad that there is no respective station in the city. The bus station - is. And here station … Alas!
Here and I arrived to Petrozavodsk by train. Long ago it was. More than twenty years passed as the first time came to the platform at the Petrozavodsk railway station, and the picture before eyes - as though everything occurred only yesterday.
Went out of the car, I look... And on the building of the station, against even dark sky - in the winter in the north late dawns, - capital red letters brightly burn. And not Cyrillics they. Latin. “Petroskoi“.
Yes it is still half-troubles. The real panic began when I at the station square appeared. Also saw not less bright inscriptions on the buildings framing with its half ring. Already blue. But - just the same Latin, as well as at the station. “Ruokatavara“ (as then it became clear, “groceries“) - on a facade of one of houses, and is slightly more right - “apteekki“, on another.
Saw and at once remembered Latvia. There literally on what ten kilometers drove off from Riga and - all. Without knowledge of Latvian … Oh, as hard!
And if here - also … My mummy! Yes as I in this Karelia will work?
Anything. Both it was earned extra, and got accustomed. Though neither Karelian, nor so still also I do not know Finnish of languages. There was no such need - to teach them. And here the first meeting with one of symbols of the Karelian capital - the Petrozavodsk railway station, thanks to these inscriptions and the emotions caused by them, and remained in memory.
But that old acquaintance, by the way, could and not take place. The matter is that the first railway station was built in Petrozavodsk in 1916.
The Black Sea passages were controlled by Turkey. And she during World War I was at war on side of Germany and Avstro - Hungary. Therefore the role of Murmansk seaport which could accept the military strategic freights arriving from allies during all calendar year considerably increased. Which not only to accept, but also to the front it is necessary to deliver! Therefore in 1914 construction of the railroad from Petrograd to Murmansk began accelerated tempo.
First of all - the highway. But already the second stage - its arrangement. Here so Petrozavodsk got the first railway station.
There was he then near modern Pervomaysky Avenue, approximately in two kilometers to the east from the present, younger fellow. And goodness knows, maybe, and would stand there if not the Great Patriotic War.
Since October 2, 1941 - go, nearly three years, Petrozavodsk was occupied by the Finnish troops. When on June 28, 1944 - go it was entered by the advanced parts of Red Army, the most part of the central part of the city lay in ruins. It was necessary to restore the Karelian capital practically from a blank sheet.
And Karelo who headed Management for architecture - Finnish the Soviet Socialist Republic Dmitry Maslennikov had an idea to create absolutely new architectural appearance of Petrozavodsk. Transfer of the railway station to the downtown had to become one of its elements. Maslennikov`s idea was supported by the government of the republic which in 1946 approved the new master town-planning plan of the Karelian capital.
But before starting construction of the new station, it was necessary to perform a number of a preparatory work - to demolish the warehouses which were on the place allocated under its construction, to transfer railway tracks and to reorganize them. On all this several years were required.
Therefore practical realization of idea of transfer of the station began only in 1953. The building in style of late neoclassicism was designed by the Leningrad architect V. Tsipulin, rather famous for the time. Among its works relating to this period it is possible to remember houses No. No. 14, 16 on Kavalergardskaya Street in St. Petersburg (1957 of construction) designed together with V. Kuznetsov the Riga railway station (1957 - 66) .
Architectural features of the new station in many respects were defined by a land relief, gradually going down towards Lake Onega that, in turn, caused existence of a considerable difference between levels of the station square and platform. An exit was found by the author of the project when developing facades of the building which turned out original as with one, and on the other hand. From the platform the station two-storeyed. From the station square it on the floor has more.
Such author`s decision allowed to leave, on the one hand, from the shortcomings which are often found in anfiladny planning consisting in monotonous monotony of the rooms going one after another, and with another - to divide a working zone and a zone of expectation, having placed them at the different levels.
On the first floor of the dvusvetny hall service premises and an underground passage - the tunnel on which it is possible to get to platforms of the second and third way are located. Here earlier also ticket offices which in 1979 moved in constructed near the station on the project of the architect E. Voskresensky bagazhno - the cash center settled down.
The restaurant and a waiting room are on the second floor of the station which balcony is decorated with a monumental colonnade of the Corinthian warrant. Molding of a protection of a balcony on the floor, as well as a handrail of the ladders conducting to it is decorated with the decorative inserts reminding of the main natural richness of the republic - its coniferous forests.
A basic element of composition of the building from the station square - the buried four-columned portico of its main entrance over which the round belvedere towers. Already on it is mute - an octahedral turret as a crown, topped 17 - a meter spike.
And it, by the way, could and not to be. For the period of construction of the station (1953 - 55) the next surge in fight against excesses had. Including architectural. And the spike of the Petrozavodsk station seemed someone from big chiefs such excess. For luck residents of the Karelian capital and not only them, it was made still before the opinion known to us appeared. Well, and time this architectural element already is available … Well, not to throw out it!
Also did not throw out. Established. But now rather long - 82 m - the case of the station does not look monotonous. The central projection playing for the main line of a facade decorated with a belvedere, a turret and a spike - the real gate of the Karelian capital, on the right and to the left of which, as the guard houses (kordegardiya) protecting them - already lateral projections.
The Petrozavodsk station accepted the first passengers on March 5, 1955. Since then he very first meets all who come to the capital of Karelia. And if someone suddenly had a desire to check it, - come! Both in Petrozavodsk, and in Karelia there are places which should be seen …
