First science fiction: year 1657 or 1709? Epilog of
... Of course, Bartolomeu and words did not tell the king about sleepwalkers. Problems were especially terrestrial. Any empty imaginations!
Exclusively military purposes: fast delivery of confidential reports by air, operational management of troops from the big height inaccessible to artillery of the opponent, delivery of ammunition and the food in the fortresses besieged by the enemy.
Even bombing by incendiary shells of the enemy sea ships, land armies and enemy strengthenings. Agree, quite pragmatic and modern approach! Just in the spirit of the military doctrine of the USA and NATO - to arrive, destroy by bombing, punish, to take!
At last, the air ships of great Portugal will be able to open new lands - up to poles!
Relatively recently, in 1934 - the m to year, in the territory of Italy was found one of early drawings of the invention to Bartolomeu Lawrence de Gousma ́ on. This drawing received the name “Passarola“. It represents, most likely, the copy of the original - the Portuguese drawing.
And it strongly differs from the drawing presented in the Austrian newspaper (Bartolomeu, most likely, had no relation to it, and for sensational article some Vienna artist dreamed probably).
In the center of almost round “mekhanizmus“ rather impressive mast carrying the “round sail“ externally very similar to a modern parachute or the top part of the balloon rises. The sail has to be filled with air, naturally. Functions of other personal belongings are reduced catching long covers of a stream of wind and through pipes to send them to “a round sail“.
In hold places for dozen of people are provided, mainly managing directors of bellows - they have to force air in a sail at a light breeze or at total absence of that. To put it briefly, judging by the drawing, the ship the calm is not terrible.
We will not argue on that now, there was “information leakage“ casual or deliberate. Or game of intelligence agencies, any investigations and counterintelligence of “the gloomy Middle Ages“. Whether interests us, first of all, used Bartolomeu, inventing the air ship, any other information whether it had predecessors? What the former colonist leaned by drawing up so grandiose pipe dream on?
Whether were known to Portuguese Bartolomeu Lawrence de Gousma ́ well names and projects of other people, we authentically do not know. Perhaps and - though the probability of it is small. But here that predecessors precisely were - it is the fact.
The Jesuit from Northern Italy by the name of Francesco Lang de Terzi wrote the book which contained the drawing similar to “Passarola“. The same form of a castle, mast with a sail in the middle … However, sail usual, the most usual, any “parachutes“. There are also other features: four very big copper spheres - vacuum a sphere!. The Jesuit believed that, having extorted all air from enormous spheres, it is possible to make them so easy that the ship will be able to rise in air. We admit that the similar subject course for the aircraft was more in those days than it is real.
By the way, in the book of the scientific Jesuit it is told about military use of the air ships, bombings too and so on and so forth. A difference only that the God-fearing Christian (unlike the aggressive Portuguese) as if complains about possible “inconveniences“ for civilians of the fired regions. Quite in the spirit of crusades of Catholic church.
Reminds also “inevitability“ of historically “fresher“ bombing to Libya “for protection of civilians“. Also recent “protection of civilians“ in Iraq, Afghanistan are memorable … Thousands of death - here the price of similar “peaceful“ policy.
However, we slightly distracted.
The king granted the Prosimy privilege to the applicant on April 17, 1709. Besides, to Bartolomeu Lawrence de Gousma ́ the N received a solid salary and department at Koimbrsky university. Envy of court grew by leaps and bounds, but court intrigues we will leave “off-screen“ too.
In the same 1709 - m to year Bartolomeu made three major - public! - experiment. The inventor showed how tiny “air ships“ movable by force of hot air rise in air. They were arranged probably simpler than the mechanism advertized right at the beginning. Also represented the rigid frameworks, for example, from rods which are pasted over with paper, the match or a candle - generally, almost Japanese “small lamps“ fastened inside.
Alas, on August 3 the first pancake left “lump“. At once captured “ship“ a flame. Already 5 - go August the flying device could flush to a ceiling - but there too lit up. And only the third attempt made on October 30 in the House of India was successful - the tiny ship rose by the good height (history conceals exact figures) and successfully fell (this time without ignition) back.
The earth filled with rumors, as “Letatel“ rose in air over time - but documentary confirmation at our disposal is not available.
By the way, hot air was used in a similar way in 1657 … in the adventure novel of the famous joker Sirano de Bergerac “Other light or the states … Moon“. Apparently, monasteries of the first fantastic work for this joke can be offered it to the author - not only to the poet, but also the scientist.
What result? Bartolomeu`s invention, apparently, disappointed the Portuguese monarch. Between “small lamp“ that rises hot air from a candle, and a military vehicle, you see, at least two big differences - so would tell in Odessa.
The materials connected with construction of the air ship disappeared completely. And in 1783 in France, having filled with hot air the balloon, his creators - Mongolfye`s brothers rose to the sky (they, most likely, knew nothing about the Portuguese predecessor - but ideas have property to soar in air, like balloons!) .
And in century the Russian inventor Alexander Fyodorovich Mozhaysky (1825-1890), received the privilege on the “an aeronautic shell“ invented by it later called plane which approximately in a year (in 1881) was constructed full-scale.
But it already another story altogether … Which (if you want) you can thumb through for a moment in a sketch “Mozhaysky who invented the plane“.
