End of journalism, or Kamo of a gryadesha?
Two years ago I corresponded with the editor of one popular magazine (usual, paper). Correspondence arose after the publication of the essay of this editor about fast professional death of such professions as the photographer and the journalist. Being a fan in journalism and slightly - slightly the professional in the photo, I, strangely enough, protected the pro. Proved that all photowebsites and services like Digg will be at best a makeweight to the present editions (let and on-line) which will create full-fledged content.
Words of the editor were prophetical. The magazine was closed in half a year after the publication of the essay. The editor departed from publishing and to come back does not see sense. The reason was covered in the income from advertizing. You think that the price of the magazine in a booth - covers at least a third of cost for it (the magazine, not a booth) production? Alas! The edition can get profit, only if advertisers regularly buy advertizing spaces on pages. The Internet enticed advertisers in the space, and the paper press began to die. And together with it and printing houses which lose every day orders for magazines, books, business cards, leaflets and so on.
Both journalists, and paper formats are partly guilty. The page is three - four thousand signs. And if on a subject it is not gathered? Or there is not enough talent to gather words? Pour water. All these “the author of these lines“ and “your obedient servant“ zamesto pronouns in one letter. Short tweets are informativny thick analytical magazines. The format of the blog gives the chance to write the short notes or the long epics hidden under cut - to whom it is interesting, will press and will read further.
Well, the text, the hypertext - all this conventions. What difference for become skilled in tamping of signs to the journalist where to spread thought on a tree and what it is a tree - real or virtual - too, by and large, all the same. If only regularly the money was paid by native publishing house.
It turned out that the hyper prefix - not just beautiful additive. The network put everything upside down. When computers were big, and speeds the Internet - channels weak, none of “paper“ editions lifted panic. But here among setyan (the word netizen forgotten nowadays which was born at the beginning of the Internet) the share of owners of small devices for consumption of information sharply increased (from phone with Opera mini and the display 320õ240 to 10 - 12 - inch netbooks and tablets). And let it pass, with splash in a graphomania! Pushchay write for nothing if you want. But everything was more terrible - mobile devices, like mobile phones and tablets, change perception of the text.
Headings of articles cease to matter - mobile readers begin “to scan“ the text pieces. You noticed that now surely before the name this or that paragraph is output from article. And not necessarily the first - how many people begin to read with the end. Itself always opened the magazine on the last page (at the same time I know still a lot of people whom a similar habit it is unreal irritates).
By what it is dangerous? Yes the fact that catch sight let and only in article, but uninteresting (from the point of view of scanning) a piece and all - your works were gone in vain. Any serious, analytical article means compound sentences, difficult terms, “ìíîãàáóêàôô“ that straight off causes effect of tl; dr (a meme from the English too long - dont read, is too long - did not read). As a result the present, honestly fulfilled article turns into a makeweight to the microtext on Twitter. Whether someone will be engaged in writing of long articles? Most likely, no. And it can lead to sad consequences. Growth of skill of the Writer happens where insistence of the Reader grows. When all have enough level of a blogging note half-and-half, to professionals to try not from a hand. All the same will not estimate.
The visual perception is changed also by means of viewing. Mobile Opera turns a page into a vertical tape - and it is devilishly convenient for the small screen, I recognize. On the big monitor: article on the center, on the right - at the left advertizing (or a blank space at the included ad block). Too it is it seems quite good. Here it is only a pity that columns which so were pleasant to me in magazines disappeared... Also the new paragraph was gone. It is really more convenient to split up the text on the monitor for pieces, doing an empty line between paragraphs. On paper we applied a space of the first line that kept unity of the text.
Similar changes - it is not obligatory badly and not necessarily well. It is process which goes irrespective of ours to it the relations. There is also one more thought forcing me to think that the mankind will return to the correct perception of the text. In e-books on eReaders the space is kept, and empty lines between paragraphs are absent. Perhaps, we only got used to “lumpy“ perception of the text of news and notes on the Internet while we stared in inconvenient big ELT - and ZhK - monitors? You will not put such piece on a table under the necessary corner. And monitors in breadth whereas analog editions have the bigger size down grow. But the armada of tablets and smartphones by default offers vertical orientation. Therefore extremely I hope that big articles will not disappear. To write much, it is necessary to read much!
As for opposition of professionals (that is that which on a salary write) and (bloggers, users of such websites, as, for example, Shkolazhizni. ru), it is worth noticing that the concept of the “yellow“ press existed long before Web 2. 0. And the word of “jeans“ was generated by journalism professional. It does not mean that the private blog is more honest and better than a thick monthly journal. But on the other hand, is also not worse at all.
