What is religious belief?

Are one of many riddles which many anyway tried to answer. Why one people have a belief, and it causes disgust in others? In this article the answer to these questions and the priest, and the psychologist in one person is offered.

We will address basic sources: “The belief to eat implementation expected and confidence in invisible“ (Evr. 11,1). So, “implementation expected“ - what is it? First of all, is what is necessary in what there is a requirement. For example, the lost health or family wellbeing.

Whether but many believers received for decades of the belief “expected“? It sometimes happens, but most often the condition of the person - sincere and physical - remains the same or it becomes even worse from this fruitless expectation. But people still go to church and believe.

Instead of aspiration to receive something process of expectation, infinite and hopeless expectation something begins to prevail. This psychological state is expressed in the dogmatic instruction of expectation of the posthumous Kingdom of Heaven. It is possible to tell that on it all religious culture of Orthodoxy is constructed.

Thus, instead of something concrete the believing person begins to expect - if it is so possible to tell - expectation. It becomes the main psychological content of religious belief. Confirmation to it is my twenty years` experience of the priest. Why does that happen? The answer is in detsko - the parental relations.

The child, wants it or not, is doomed to an inclination to parents. It is caused, first of all, by the biological reasons - without maternal milk, care and leaving, especially in the first year of life, the child just will not survive. Further the child receives all from parents necessary for full human development. This training in circulation, speech, thinking, toilet, human relations, etc. But the most important that is necessary for the child, is a care and love of parents.

The aspiration to receiving all this from parents is supported in the child by an instinct - if it is so possible to tell - an instinct of formation by the person. In this case K. G. Jung`s term - psychoides, intermediate education between instincts and archetypes more approaches, but in our case for simplification we will use the word “instinct“.

So, the instinct forces the child to expect from parents all that it is necessary for it for normal psychophysiological development. But often happens so that the child of it does not receive, first of all, in the emotional sphere. Present, the child for days on end sits Home Alone and waits for mother. Arrival of mother in this case for the child will be a supervaluable event which relieves it of boredom and brings joy.

Mother comes, but the child`s life in general from it does not change - next day he is also forced to wait for mother. Moreover, the supervaluable event - arrival of mother - can be depreciated by her bad mood or her chronic discontent with the child. Other example: the child waits the whole year for a supervaluable event - the promised toy. There comes long-awaited day, and the child hears: “Leave alone!“ To what leads such relation of parents?

The child gets used to wait, without receiving expected. Gets used to expect painfully, without hope of approach of the most supervaluable event which as to it it is dreamed, will present full-fledged joyful life. This fruitless expectation structures mentality of the child. Fruitless expectation becomes a habitual way of life.

The habit to live expectation and “confidence in invisible“ which never comes is so formed. Tendency to religious belief is so formed. Such person looks for conformable to the internal state Wednesday and finds it in church, here he feels, in the true sense of the word, as houses.

It is necessary to notice that “expectation expected“ can exist not only in the church environment. For example, the woman with such children`s experience can wait for all life the favourite married man and, of course, at the same time is habitual suffer. Often religious life is combined with similar dependences, and one strengthens another.

It is obvious that the child who got used to receive in the childhood from parents necessary and not only necessary, got used to try to obtain the from parents “will not understand“ the child who is constantly living unrealizable expectation at all. Therefore it is so difficult for faithless person to understand the believer. These are absolutely different psychotypes.

It should be noted that the church environment gives not only an opportunity of habitual expectation unrealizable and invisible, but also many other opportunities for dependent behavior - refusal of own requirements to please to religious dogmas or imaginations of the father, suffering and humiliation, imaginations about rescue of the neighbor.

But about it another time.
