Cultural life of Armenians in Baku of
C 70 - x years of the 19th century Armenians held a specific place in cultural life of the city of Baku, and thanks to the Armenian community a specific place was held by theater.
The Armenian theater life of the city of Baku began in 1870 when in the house of the rich Armenian N. Krasilnikyan there began the activity the actor`s troupe consisting of pupils of real school of Avaga Grigoryants. It introduced some activity in theater life of the city of Baku (generally Russian theater worked before).
For the first representation vaudevilles “Dalal Gago“ of N. Puginyan and “Gisherva saber here“ G. Sundukyan were chosen (the director P. Aslanyan, is thin. German Kipe).
Since 1871 the troupe was headed by Gevorg Amiragyan. In days of its management the troupe played “Metsn Nerses“ (Nerses Veliky) M. Vananadets, “Wai to them korats isun voskin“ (Oh, my lost fifty gold) N. Aladatyana, “Kandats odzha“ (The destroyed center), “Ales mi zokh“ (One more victim) G. Sundukyan, “Avazakner“ (Robbers) of Schiller and other plays.
The best Armenian actors were employed in the Armenian theater of Baku: G. Abelyan, G. Avetyan, O. Maysuryan, P. Araksyan, A. Vruyr, A. Arutyunyan, Vardui, I. Alikhanyan, A. Hitaryan, S. Adamyan, etc. This theatrical company made huge success at on the Baku society.
Armenians put the most famous plays of classical and modern Armenian, and also Russian and European dramatic art, for example “The lady with camellias“ of the son - Dumas, “Lucrative post“ and “Guilty though guiltless“ A. Ostrovsky, “Metsapativ a muratskanner“ (Pious beggars) and “Pakhtasar akhpar“ A. Paronyana, “Taming obstinate“ V. Shakespeare, G. Sundukyan`s “Pepo“, “Auditor“ of Century. Gogol, etc.
On an initiative and with assistance of the Armenian philanthropic society in 1884 created also Armenian cultural association of Baku which even more recovered theater life. In 1906 for the purpose of expansion of a network of comprehensive and vocational schools efforts socially - the politician K. Hatisyan based the Armenian cultural association which promoted development of original and translation literature, Armenian, scenic skill, music, painting and architecture even more. Association organized concerts, representations, created choruses, actor`s circles, and also promoted expansion of the Armenian theater of Baku.
At the initiative of the art commission the comic opera of T. Chukhadzhyan “by Leblebidzhi chorus - chorus - aha“ was for the first time staged in theater Mailyanov in 1912. The Armenian cultural association of Baku ceased to work in September, 1918 after the Armenian riots in Baku.
From 1910 to 1920. Baku worked opera troupe (Amiragoya) of Amiragyan and operno - drama troupe Y. Voskanyan, where Arus Voskanyan, Garagashyan, Oganyan, etc. took part. Representations were given generally in theater Mailyanov who the equipment promoted their success. These troupes presented to the Baku society of the operetta “Ashug Garib“ of Aylamazyan, “Ush tenches - nush tenches“ (Better late, but it is better) G. Eritsyan, “Aylk“ (Others) Are. Tumanyana, etc., and also dramas “Hamlet“, “Orleans Maiden“, “Medea“, “Old Gods“, “Hent“, etc.
On an initiative and under Anton Mailyan`s edition in 1910 - 1917 issued the Theatre and Music magazine in which all cultural life of Armenians of Baku was presented. In 1920 Mailyan headed East theatrically - musical studio with the Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian offices.
Further this studio was called by the name of Buniatzade and became theatrical school. Mailyan was also the manager of East conservatory of Baku and directed musical drama studio of Azerbaijanians. Mailyan wrote a set of operettas and children`s operas, composed music for the Armenian and Azerbaijani statements, put the ballet “Indian Beauty“ and the opera “Safa“. Also famous composer Anushavan Ter - Gevondyan who from 1934 to 1938 was the director of the Baku conservatory lived and created in Baku.
In musical life of Armenians of Baku the important place was taken by ashug. They went on villages and participated in song competitions. Especially well-known was ashug Dhoni who was considered as the master of ashug of this period, their teacher. In the 19th century lived and Meyad created well-known ashug (Petros Madatyan). In 1885 with the chorus acted in Buck Kara - Murza, in 1886 Makar Ekmalyan presented the well-known Liturgy.
In 1908 with lectures and with chorus Komitas acted in Baku that had huge impact on cultural life of the city.
the Huge role in musical life to Buck was played by the conductor A. Ovannisyan who in 1920 created the first Azerbaijani national tool ensemble.
Armenians also made the significant contribution to painting development. In Baku Bashindzhagyan (1885) exhibitions, V. Surenyantsa (1901) opened that was a big event in cultural life of the city. At local Armenian schools painting was taught as a separate subject. The office of “Ayart“ opened in 1923 organized exhibitions, discussions in which artists Vardan Ter - Pogosyan, Eachi Proshyan, Musheg Sagyan, Sh. Mangasarov, etc. took part. The author of the coat of arms of the Soviet Azerbaijan Republic is R. Shkhkyan. Nearly half a century in art school the theatrical artist A. Ogannisyan who was highly esteemed among the Baku intellectuals taught Buck painting.
