How the Victory was under construction? A legend of the Soviet automotive industry of

Origin of a legend of the Soviet Union began in heavy 1943. On February 3, 1943 in Moscow in Narkomsredmash meeting at which Andrey Lipgart reported on the course of developments of new cars including automobile GAS - 25, after renamed into M20 GAS took place.

The leading designer on a body appointed Alexander Kirillov. Configuration of the car was charged to be drawn to group under the leadership of Boris Kirsanov. Controlled their work the first deputy Lipgarta A. Krieger (on the chassis and the engine) and Yury Sorochkin (on a body). After production of the first cars the rare optical effect was found: at a view of a forward wing from certain foreshortenings it seemed that the wing is bent. This effect arose from - for the fact that the big site of a wing had curvature of constant radius.

Some elements of a body had to be stamped in parts, and then to weld together. Plants had no technologies of stamping of difficult surfaces. But, despite all difficulties, in November, 1944 the chief designer personally took the wheel of a prototype and brought him to tests.

The first car had a six-cylinder engine, back doors opened forward, and forward and back wings were cut out in such a way that on boards of the car there passed two cracks dividing body elements. In front the wing not closely adjoined to a forward door, and the contour of a back door did not reach a wheel arch. All this disturbed perception of a sidewall of the car.

Nevertheless, the Victory looked very dynamically and is modern, and the stylish inclination of glasses strengthened this effect. And from the point of view of aerodynamics the body was developed ideally. But more such type of a body in the Soviet automotive industry was not applied.

Eventually the Victory was thought over extremely thoroughly. Its all forms were not only beautiful, but also practical. M20 GAS became the first domestic car with the bearing body and the first-ever serial car with a body of a “wingless“ form.

The abundance of the chromeplated details gave to the car an elegant and solid look. Technically the car was full of the novelties facilitating life to the driver. There were electric indexes of turn and feet - signals, and also a heater and sound signals of high-pitch and low tone.

For the first time the luggage carrier was provided in the Victory. The car had comfortable and spacious salon in which 5 people freely settled down. The car had an independent suspension bracket of forward wheels and the hydraulic drive of brakes. The choice of the engine stood between six-cylinder GAS 11 and its four-cylinder version. Production a shesterok was well debugged, and the four was more compact, easier and consumed less fuel. But, without having come to a final version, the last word was left for the Leader.

On June 19, 1945, in 5 days prior to Victory Day parade, the legendary car appeared on court to Joseph Stalin. With the six Stalin was skeptical about the car. Besides, in the post-war country there was a crunch with fuel, and the option with the four was very economic. As a result after long studying of both cars Stalin told: “It is necessary to accept the car with the four, the car good“.
