What was the Soviet wedding?
Modern young people, as a rule, before registering marriage, prefer “to live“. Some do not seek to legalize the relations at all. Perhaps the institute of marriage dies? Or in the history there were similar precedents?
In the Middle Ages the unique form of marriage was marriage church. People then moved a little therefore life of each person, as a rule, proceeded within one village. However gradual migrations led to a situation when people of different religious faiths began to marry. And, if marriage admitted one, then could be “illegal“ in other faith. Such situation led to the fact that the role of the registrar of the relations was undertaken by the state.
It is considered that for the first time it occurred in the Netherlands at the end of the 16th century. In Russia still long time marriage was fixed only by church records. The first attempts of civil legalization of a family belong to the 19th century when marriages of Old Believers began to be fixed in registers of births.
Transformations Soviet the authorities which led to disestablishment became the real revolution in family life. It is natural that young Soviet management took the responsibility for legalization of the relations. As birthday of a civil marriage in Russia it is possible to consider on December 20, 1917, become history as day of the publication of the Decree of Council of People`s Commissars “About a civil marriage, about children and about maintaining books of acts of a state“. In this document, in particular, made a reservation that from now on only the relations registered by the state admit marriage, that is the union generating the mutual rights and duties. Church marriage became a private affair of each family.
Imagine what resonance made this document on our great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers. - that the document - still half-troubles. Mass change not only external attributes, but the relation to a family became the real shock. Young builders of the Soviet state did not need blessing of parents any more, and for a marriage in an operating mode came into executive committee. By the way, if before the satellite or the companion of life parents chose, then now this privilege they were deprived. Everyone could choose with whom to build a family.
Together with thrill of anticipation of family happiness grandiosity and solemnity of a wedding disappeared, wedding dresses were succeeded by working suits. The ritualism, observance of traditions was a thing of the past. The wedding became business everyday and low-remarkable. Cases when the groom took away the bride without the knowledge of parents to the house began to practice in some villages, and then young people brought together friends on one of new Soviet holidays, as if on the occasion of creation of a family, but nominally, for example, on the occasion of harvesting or birthday of the leader.
In one reminiscence I read that the bride waiting for registration fell asleep, and a sprosonok incorrectly called future surname. Our contemporary who fell asleep where - nibud in a registry office would be good.
The red wedding became a prototype of the modern cohabitation which is mistakenly called today by “civil marriage“. As a rule, the wedding days selected under “red“ days of a calendar, that is date of the Soviet holidays, especially significant for generation 1920 - 1930 - x. Running forward, we will note that this euphoria passed, and since 1950 - x brides began to dress white dresses again, and returned to a wedding its solemn value in everyday life of the people.
Perhaps because to replace minimalism the solemnity and splendor returned to fashion, maybe, the post-war generation became more trembling to belong to traditions, but already wedding photos of our parents imprinted the festive moments of the Soviet family.
Times pass, values remain. Let`s love and protect our families!
