National stereotypes. Why they are so hardy in our consciousness?
If are short, then national stereotypes are the idea of one people of another or of themselves simplified, emotionally painted. In spite of the fact that national stereotypes may contain truth grain, they are often based on discrimination and prejudices and have, frankly speaking, the negative nature. Rooting of stereotypes is promoted by the fact that they are divided by most of people.
Thus, the national stereotype can be defined as the prejudiced attitude towards the representative of this or that nation.
Scientists - psychologists consider that national stereotypes arise and live in our consciousness from - for weaknesses of our critical thinking. To live in this world full of the most various phenomena and people, certain simplifications - categories are required for the person. Therefore he instead of comprehensively considering everyone with whom he communicates, hangs on him the known label. So to us it is easier and simpler.
Which of us did not smile, having seen on the TV screen in the Nasha Russia program of guest workers Ravshan and Dzhamshud? Really, when these a grief - builders seal up windows wall-paper, cook a master`s cat soup and distort Russian, it can even be ridiculous to someone. Such here offensive, in fact, image of builders - Tajiks and in general all guest workers, is created on our television.
Long before Ravshan with Dzhamshud, at the Soviet power, a standard of the near person we had a Chukchi. Who did not hear jokes about this representative of the people of Far North?
In any case Chukchi. Let`s remember Ukrainians from them “chariness, cunning and love to fat“.
Or the Georgian which “all walk in caps - airfields sell in the winter a mimosa and carnations and bribe by car “Volga“ or a ram for arrival of the son in capital higher education institution“.
Balts at us are slowed allegedly down, Belarusians eat one potatoes, all Roma thieves, beggars and, in general, steal children.
All Moldavians near because since the early childhood drink grape wine.
Most of all offensive labels got, perhaps, to Jews. “Cunning, greedy, with big noses, every day eat the stuffed fish, despise all others and aim to deceive each Russian“.
We will remember here too the representative of the Transcaucasian people - the Armenian who, “where passed, there two Jews have nothing to do“.
And the title nation of Russia - the Russian people that tell about it others. Laziness, alcoholism and slovenliness - one of the annoying and painful stereotypes for Russians.
Especially many nicknames on a national sign occur in the army environment. Before recruits from the Central Asian republics teased “chocks“. Now natives from the Caucasus are called “by zverm, black, lakes“ not only in army. It does not prevent them to come to the Russian cities, to occupy there the food markets and to open the business, legal or illegal. As you can see, - builders - Belarusians, Ukrainians, Moldavians and Tajiks, they are not among migrants deprived of civil rights. Now let`s imagine the Russian who arrived, for example, in Baku and opened the business there. It does not remind you the shortest joke: “The Jew - the janitor“?
Why it is so unpleasant to all when someone roughly concerns national images?
Here it should be noted that stereotypes and folklore and jokes based on them in the international relation - a factor very widespread. They simplify idea of how other people and who such ourselves on their background look.
On the one hand, similar baizes and jokes recover our everyday life, give “perchinka“ in communication. The critical look from outside sometimes is even useful.
On the other hand, national stereotypes cannot in details and precisely describe these or those people. The people inhabiting not so long ago Soviet Union had very different habitat. Let`s remember the same the Chukchi in which language contain about two hundred synonyms of definition of a condition of snow, svan inhabiting mountainous areas of Georgia or steppe nomads of Kyrgyz.
Each nation in its cultural, historical and religious baggage has also a mass of the distinctions and things inherent only to it and to which it attaches special significance.
So, the people practising Islam have accurately registered concept “haram“, i.e. dirty, unpleasant, forbidden, sinful. Therefore when from the screen of the TV show how Ravshan with Dzhamshud cook to themselves food in a toilet bowl, it cannot but offend feelings of Muslims. In Turkey in any public toilet, even rural, there is a water faucet. Also it should be noted, all use it. Here to the place to remind a baize of how to recognize the Russian in Paris: gloomy, something always anxious and eternally somewhere hurrying and when leaves a toilet, on the run clasps a fly.
There is one subtlety in the interethnic relations which should be mentioned here. Can carry it to two next people, for example, Russians and Ukrainians, and even to different groups in one nationality. The difference in cultural development in them is absolutely small. But, nevertheless, everyone has stereotypes of perception of each other and the folklore. Therefore trifles absolutely insignificant at first sight are stuck out by time. To take, for example, love of Ukrainians to fat. It appears, a half of the population of this neighboring country cannot suffer it, and fat is eaten more in Belarus where pigs are brought up potato.
In jokes “Russians“ usually drink more, and “Ukrainians“ are resourceful and hard-fisted. But, as we know, there is no big difference between vodka and gorilka. In general, household pereshuchivaniye between Russia and Ukraine remind more dismantling many years of the spouses who lived under the same roof and recently dispersed.
That we compose about each other jokes and ridiculous baizes there is no bad nothing. It is far more terrible when culturally close people begin to see in the neighbor of the real enemy as it was in the broken-up Yugoslavia between the Serbians and Croats speaking one language.
Also do not give us God if something similar to happen to us. Then will become not to jokes any more.
