Whether it is easy to create cars for solid clients? Pakkard - history of formation of the elite

brand

“... Also the cloth - limousines, limousines is not visible...“ - it is undoubted, this picture sank down in memory that who remembers Moscow pre-war or at least the first half 50 - x.

And according to movies many remember these smart cars of magnificent, impressive forms shining chrome and a varnish. The majority of the well-known American movies 40-50 - x got years to hire in the Soviet Union decade - to others later, than in the West.

In 30 - e years Moscow used to know many magnificent limousines, it is reflected in literature of that time.

In one of Kassil`s novels (the passionate motorist, by the way) the car of the famous film director - low, with the drowned headlights, color reminding a bug - a bronzovka, with a folding seat in sloping “tail“ is rather in detail described.

In “The goalkeeper of the republic“ the important place is allocated for the girl in a fur coat who is carelessly leaning the elbows about a board of the extended, brilliant, “thoroughbred“ car.

Ilf and Petrov who made creative business trip to the North American United States are a lot of pages in the description of this, no doubt, a trip rich with impressions gave to a motor show in New - York and to cars in general.

Among automobile brands as it is possible to notice, two friends who presented us unforgettable images of the Great Schemer Ostap Bender, “the son of the lieutenant Schmidt“ Shura Balaganov, Mikhail Samuelyevich Panikovsky and immense soul of the driver Adam Kazimirovich Kozlevich pay a tribute of special respect of Pakkardu.

This car, undoubtedly, symbolized even not success or luxury - it represented dream. And the dream not necessarily has to come true. It has to just be - because what is life without dream?

The dream to go quicker, than by a horse, visited the successful electrical engineer James Ward Pakkard at the very end of the XIX century. It found time to go for 80 miles - to the next Cleveland where Alexander Uinton, having gained experience of production of bicycles, decided to pass to cars. (Automobile - this term was preferred by Americans as opposed to the English Motor Car.)

Mr. Uinton easily conceded to him 13 - y from the easy motor crews of a design, characteristic of America of that time, which are let out at his factory - a small motor under a frame, bicycle wheels, the curved steering lever - “a cow tail“, an antisplash guard in front...

Whether Vina to that unhappy serial number, but James could not reach on new acquisition to the house in Warren. Probably, Uinton`s carriage was a hlipkovata for those roads that were in Ohio in those days. The motor began to start to boil already on the second mile, bicycle tires were obviously not calculated for use on the motorized vehicle, driving chains came off, steering draft burst...

At last, at a roadside farm Mr. Pakkard called to the owner, and, having charged with a front of “a miracle of modern equipment“ farmer trough valleys, they moved back to Cleveland with the purpose to return goods to the producer, to collect from that the paid money, and at the same time to blame on the consumer qualities of a novelty which are not quite satisfying to inquiries publics.

This last caused obviously negative reaction in Mr. Uinton. He considered himself as the excellent specialist in autobusiness, was proud of the products and on remarks of Mr. Pakkard, quite correct in a form, about constructive miscalculations in a fuse blurted out: “Time you know everything why don`t you construct the car?!“

frankly did not please Mr. Pakkard aplomb of Mr. Uinton, and, having told whenever possible frostily: “I will follow your advice“, - it turned and left. Naturally, construction of the car became for it a point of honor, it was a person of the high principles.

Mr. Pakkard not just swaggered - next year gate of its workshop left the first ten cars. They had a motor located in front, a steering wheel on an inclined column, tires - the pneumatics ordered in Goodyear firm - the certificate that Mr. Pakkard did not lose sight of the most advanced tendencies.

In 1901 Mr. Pakkard brought the cars on an exhibition to Chicago. He modestly put them at an entrance - halls were already crowded with miracles of science and equipment. Just at this time the Chicago businessman Henry Joy looked for to himself at an exhibition modern “horseless crew“. He became interested in the steam car. The driver put to an exhibit, obviously, itself had no sufficient experience of the address with a technical novelty. Having dissolved couples, it awkwardly turned the crane, a vledstviye of what the strong vapor jet escaped. Scalded Mr. Dzhoya not strongly, but he was frightened thoroughly and promised to come nearer to paromobilyam.

Next day Mr. Joy paid attention to how Mr. Pakkard samolichno started the car. Having caught Mr. Dzhoya`s eye, James suggested that to sweep. That with some caution got on a seat, the car surely started and drove down the street. Just at this time by fire trough valleys flew. Mr. Pakkard easily overtook them and found out from the fire captain as where he burns. After that it developed the car and returned on an exhibition. So petrol cars began to show the advantage before steam.

As a result Mr. Joy not just bought the car. He undertook to finance Pakkard`s enterprise. In a year of Pakkarda already descended from the assembly line at new plant in Detroit.

The management of firm decided to try the hand and in sport, having exposed the car on prestigious races on the cup founded by the passionate fan of technical novelties William Kissem Vanderbildt - younger, inherited a milliard fortune.

For creation of the racing car the French engineer Charles Schmidt was invited. Schmidt did not begin to project the heavy-duty monster. Its car reminded created by it for the athlete count Fournier, famous in Europe, 20 - strong Mors. Schmidt from scratch created an easy frame and a suspension bracket. Only 24 - the strong motor was serial.

In principle, such vehicle was easier to be operated, but on enormous Locomobile, Pierless, FIAT, Peugeot, Case sat strong men - Barney Oldfild, Dario Resta, Jimmy Murphy, “the Gun Kernel“ Edwin Baker... They literally rubbed clean a small avtomobilchik by the name of “Grey Wolf“. As a result the car attained the age as advertizing before movie theater in Dallas - the provincial then city, Texas was not known yet neither as cowboy`s nor as oil staff. Subsequently the firm tried to use the name Gray Wolf again, but about it later...

In races Pakkard and Uinton`s rivalry continued. Uinton exposed on start powerful cars under the names “Bullett I“ and “Bullett II“ - that is “the Bullet - 1“ and “the Bullet - 2“.

In 1904 a certain doctor, companion Uintona, on a bet in $50 made run San - Frantsisko - New - York. Mr. Pakkard called this result in question for what Mr. Uinton filed a lawsuit against it. Then Pakkard himself prepared the car for the transamerican run. The run course was fixedly watched by newspaper reporters. After the finish when 63 days later behind there were thousands of miles of the American roads, and mostly - off road terrain, prairies, sand, stony taluses, impassable dirt, all recognized - Uinton`s result is undoubtedly blocked. Judicial proceedings “Uinton against Pakkard“ fairly dragged on meanwhile. As a result the court left the parties at the interests - in 1926 - m to year, a year later after liquidation of the enterprise of Mr. Uinton.

James Pakkard left the company of the name everything in the same 1904. Then by cars the radiator appeared it is unique the pakkardovsky form “in the form of the gendarme`s hat“.

The company chose the direction of the activity release of solid and high-speed cars. They were issued in line, but it allowed to achieve decrease in prime cost and achievement of the quality inaccessible to the small companies with semi-handicraft work. As a result of a pakkarda surely took a position in the market.

Pakkarda were equipped with custom bodies like “landol“, “a town - carat“, “limousine“ and “phaeton“, assuming driving with the hired driver. However their owners often found pleasure in independent driving, and Pakkarda with bodies experts carried “phaeton“ to sports.

In the nomenclature of the bodies which were established on Pakkarda was one very characteristic type, so-called “Victoria“. It had the English origin, its name went from favourite crew of Her Majesty of the Queen Victoria. This body is interesting that the lateral door provides very convenient access and to a back sofa, and to the driver`s seat, the benefit of a front passenger seat in such car is not present unless - as a last resort - a folding stool.

Doors from the driver could not be. The top by such car, as well as on the crew of the same name, developed and rose rather easily while on cabriolets the top developed only in special cases as this operation demanded application of considerable efforts. There was also a closed version of such body, very graceful in appearance.

Undergoing over the years changes, this body lived up to World War II and later there were hunters to exotic “viktoriya“, “sedanok“, “brogem“, “a town - cows“.

But it were already whims of certain clowns.
