What could be St. Petersburg? Transport and infrastructure of

It is known that history has no subjunctive mood. Nevertheless, it is interesting to reflect what could be ideally the image of the hometown what it is necessary to aspire to.

This year the author of these lines happened to visit one European city which is externally very similar to St. Petersburg. It is similar so that, going along streets, you catch yourself on thought, as did not drive off from the house for hundreds of kilometers.

You judge: the city is located at the same width, as St. Petersburg, to within the tenth degree (59. 2 and 59. 6 NL) . As well as St. Petersburg, the city is located on a set of the islands connected by bridges, city streets are walked by trams, and low building of the downtown together with stone embankments is similar so that when I processed photos from a trip, the spouse, having incidentally looked at one of a photo on the monitor screen, asked: “It is St. Petersburg?“

But, undoubtedly, differences is, they are located at much thinner level which is swept up on a photo not at once. These differences are visible not at once, but they just also make that imperceptible atmosphere which allows to feel like the Person, allows to like respect for the city and its inhabitants. Allows to understand, how still we should change a lot of things to be considered as really European city. In what a difference? It is difficult to express it in words, but all - we will try to find “10 differences“ and to stop on them in more detail.

the First that you notice in any city, is a system of roads.

Looking at a photo, it is possible to see the first two differences. In - the first, public transport. For it the separate strip on which cars do not come around is allocated. It is fair not only for the center, in suburbs it is also possible to see a separate strip with the inscription “BUS“.

And that is not less important, - this strip nobody borrows. In the morning on entry into the city in the stopper lasting on hundreds of meters, the right strip remains free though any physical obstacles (columns, borders) separating it no. Thanks to it buses go more - less quickly and without delays.

the Second difference which is also visible on a photo, - the developed network of bicycle tracks. They are everywhere: either on a roadside, or on the sidewalk which is divided by the special line into two parts. Even you should not say, likely, that to go on a bicycle track and the more so it is not accepted to come around on it by car at all. The cyclist here - full and dear participant of traffic. Bicycles a huge number, by bicycle it is possible to see also the man in a business suit, and the woman in pass - a skirt, and mother with the child in the special cycle trailer.

And, at last, the third difference is a culture of driving in general. All steam of cars goes precisely on the strips, nobody jumps from a row in a row and there is no need in it - all strips go equally, according to the allowed speed. Do not arrange anywhere jams when instead of 3 - x strips it turns out 4 or even 5, nobody signals, tries to squeeze forward, to slip on red, all go exactly and quietly. What is surprising - as a result average speed turns out even higher, in the morning all stream goes to “rush hour“ slowly, but practically without stops, with quite decent average speed. And as the bonus - at such driving practically does not happen accidents, during all the time I did not see any road accident and observed only one passed car with a dent on one side. As the driver of our bus, in Europe told roads already Petersburg, but it is easier to go on them. To our drivers is what to think …

of; the Fourth difference - cars. Small cars prevail. Large jeeps are, but very in small quantity. By the way, during all the time I did not see any Hammer (in St. Petersburg they can be met on several pieces in a day). Probably, in Europe the car so is not exotic that comes to nobody to mind “to show off“ that, who has a car more and more abruptly, unlike our inhabitants who “seized“ to more only recently - less available car loans … of

the Fifth difference which is indirectly also relating to transport - all roads have congresses for disabled people and baby carriages. By the way, not only are expensive. In all museums where it happened to happen, there are about three toilets - man`s, female and specially equipped for disabled people. There are also elevators by means of which the disabled person or the woman with a carriage can rise by the necessary floor, without resorting to assistance.

Besides disabled people, on the street sometimes it happened to see elderly people in special chairs - the electric cars allowing them to move on the city with the pedestrian`s a speed - really useful invention allowing to facilitate considerably life that who for health reasons cannot independently move any more. Probably, to compare to life and conditions for disabled people in our country it is possible even not to try.

However, and at us already something is tried to be done. For example at the Ladoga station made congress for disabled people. 50-100 meters long and with a height difference to 2 - 3 floors, and at the end - an abrupt turn by 180 degrees. To what speed the disabled person on such descent will disperse, fans of physics can independently count. However, it is better, than nothing...

The remained 5 differences will be considered in the following part of article.
