Revekka and Eliezer: what is their history attractive to artists by?
With amazing constancy artists choose a moment of a meeting of Eliezer and Revekki. It is possible because there are so much characters - both Revekka, and Eliezer, and drivers, and camels, and the townswomen who came for water are shorter - is where to be developed art thought. And composition it is possible to play, both color, and the invoice … someone Eliezer drinks
U, at another - together with Eliezer camels drink, at the third - Revekka receives gifts … Time sharing creations of artists - till 1000 therefore both clothes of characters, and their appearance, and a landscape, and wells respectively change.
For example, in the Bible there is no direct instruction on Eliezer`s age (the age can be counted approximately, Eliezer is from 65 to 70 years old), and artists see it elderly (in the most part), but sometimes represent him as very nice young man. Eliezer`s clothes too different: somewhere it in a chlamys of east type, and somewhere - in a medieval European suit (most of artists saw camels only on some illustrations in manuscripts, and in Palestine practically none of them were). About east clothes they could judge only by clothes of Arabs.
A header illustration to article - “Revekka and Eliezer“ Bartolomeo Esteban Murilyo. A well - on a height, nearby - some wall (can be, city), below at the left - camels and drivers. Shadows are long, grows dark. Near a well - four young women. At one of them in hands a bucket from which the dark-haired man drinks. The woman turned away aside, looks at girlfriends.
As if all elements of a legend are present: Eliezer drinks, Revekka holds a bucket with water, at a well - townswomen, at some distance camels. Everything is - but there is no unity of action.
In this scene Eliezer has to identify Abraham`s daughter-in-law - and on it there is no hint. Also there is no communication between camels and a well.
It - “Revekka and Eliezer“ Nicolas Poussin.
There is a city, a well, evening, townswomen, black-bearded Eliezer, Revekka - and any camel. Camels are how important - it is the second question. In a picture Eliezer and Revekki`s communication is traced: he tells something to it, and she favourably listens. But not only that Eliezer is rather young, he does not drink! All scene is perceived as advances of the unfamiliar man with the maiden, at the same time her companions watch it with big curiosity. There is no hint on how Eliezer defined that before it - Isaak`s bride.
It is Maratti. Well, evening, townswoman, camel. But Eliezer already got drunk and made a choice, Revekka receives gifts from Eliezer.
Paolo Veronese decided to move away excess women, left camels, the city at some distance and to Revekk. Eliezer`s servant reports Revekke (which already far for 20) the matchmaker`s gifts. Eliezer has no moment of the choice, the enlightenment moment, it in the past, beyond the scope of a picture any more.
On Arkady Ostritsky`s cloth too a scene at a well. Grows dark, the heat fell down, it is a high time to follow water. The well is in the country arranged so that near it there is a drinking bowl - the place where can drink cattle. Townswomen with jugs, one already leaves. The girl in a red attire pours water in a bowl of the gray-bearded man sitting on the edge of a well. On the right in the foreground and at some distance - camels, drivers, at the left - jugs and a burro. In depth - houses, on the right - mountains in a haze.
Eliezer (it in his cup flows water) does not know yet what of girls should be taken in the daughter-in-law to Abraham. Also does not know how he recognizes her! But Eliezer as the devoted slave wants the best for the mister that can only imagine. And he argues:
“13. Here, I stand at a water source, and daughters of residents leave to scoop water;
14. And the maiden to whom I will tell: “incline your jug, I will get drunk“ and which will tell [me]: “drink, I and to your camels will allow to drink“, [yet will not get drunk] - here that which You appointed to the slave your Isaak; and I recognize by this that You create favor with my master [Abraham]“. (Book Life, chapter 24).
(Interesting thing: the slave defines traits of character of the bride for the son of the mister! What has to be this maiden? Friendly, generous, hardworking, hardy. Affability - it has to allow to get drunk to him. Generosity - it has to give to drink camels. Diligence and endurance - to give to drink 10 camels how many it is necessary to extend waters from a well! Elementary calculation shows - up to 1300 liters!)
“17. Also the slave towards to it ran and told: let`s me enjoy a little water from your jug.
18. She told: drink, my master. And immediately lowered the jug on the hand and gave to drink it.
19. And when gave to drink him, told: I will begin to scoop and for your camels, yet [all] will not get drunk.
20. And immediately poured out water of the jug in gave to drink and ran again to kolodezyu to gather [waters], and scooped up for all camels it“.
This moment - key: Revekka pours a bowl to Eliezer, and Eliezer identifies future wife of Isaak, the son Abraham. Eliezer is struck that all signs with which he allocated future bride coincide to the last.
It is extraordinary beautiful - Eliezer cannot take away from it a look. Her face reminds the full moon (lunoliky). A beads from nacre - a symbol of her innocence:
“16. The maiden was beautiful a look, the maiden who was not learned by the husband“.
On a lap at Eliezer - a casket with gifts. And not only bride. By the way, in the Bible it is precisely specified how many on gold weight Eliezer handed to Revekke as a gift:
“22. When camels ceased to drink, then the person that took a gold earring, is powerful polsiklya, and two wrists on hands to it, weighing ten sikly gold“ (for reference: sikl - or the shekel - weighed 5,6 grams).
Arkady Ostritsky managed to show affability, beauty, Revekki`s innocence. Eliezer`s position gives the chance to precisely designate his attitude towards Revekka: his delight, its choice.
And in spite of the fact that in the forefront - group of camels, the center of a picture - the bride, the pure beauty. Its red attire near velvety hair of camels a magnet attracts a look.
Color scale of a picture as if muffled. Even it is bright - a red spot of clothes of Revekki does not destroy impression that already there came twilight.
The picture looks static, all as if stiffened. But there are two dynamic elements: current water and intense, delighted look of Eliezer.
Arkady Ostritsky showed variety of characters and details of bible times, connected by a scene of action both townswomen, and camels, and a well, and Abraham`s gifts. But the most impressive in a picture - Eliezer`s view of Revekka . It is a sign from above about which Eliezer speaks: “and I recognize that You create favor with my master [Abraham] by this“.
The desire to see this moment of an enlightenment forced fans of art to order this story again and again. And the hand of artists was conducted by desire to grab this instant and to stop it on a cloth.
And one thousand years they repeat the story about Revekka and Eliezer.
