Homer. Island of love stories?
Why La Homer are called La Gomera - nobody knows. Perhaps, once a certain queen with a similar name ruled there. In Russian it now just is called Gomery .
And there lived on the island tribes probably close to guancha of Tenerife. Both islands are located extremely close from each other - 28 kilometers on a straight line though from - for lack of watercrafts between these close located islands regular contact was not kept.
Possibly and the fact that languages were similar, but differed in dialects. And here the way of life was similar to a way of life guanchy Tenerife. But again riddle: on Homer there was a matriarchy. Only with arrival of Spaniards was established “as it is necessary“, and it became clear who in the house the owner. However, in a family there could be a matriarchy still some time, with inheritance on the female line, with domination of the woman and multicourage. But men were military leaders, most likely.
On the island remained many artifacts connected with life of the ancient population. There the huge stone remained - a block about ton it is powerful, obviously sacred appointment. On it it is possible to see the petroglyphs similar to petroglyphs guanchy Tenerife. They are also not deciphered. And the fact that this block is speckled by traces from bullets of the Spanish arkebuz and bombard, only proves its sacral character.
The surprising stone circle from sacred stones - whether the place for a meeting of councils of natives, whether the place for priestly meetings remained. Guanchy Gomera`s god was called Orahan, almost under the same name it was known on Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Arocan), and here in La Palma he was called Abora.
the Legend the first - about brave and in love guanch
This legend says that though there were no relations between islands, certain daredevils all - decided to overcome the water space dividing islands. Once a certain young man - the representative guanchy Tenerife - built something like a raft from the wineskins inflated with air made of goat skins. Having waited for favorable weather and the necessary direction of wind, it was let in swimming. And safely reached La Homer`s island.
Locals accepted it quite friendly. And some time he quietly lived among them. Yet between it and a certain notable girl (love feelings did not arise the leader`s daughter, differently in any way). Their novel quickly developed and business went to a wedding. But local authoritative inhabitants were against it successions of events: the matter is that to Tenerife periodically still there were volcanic eruptions of Teide perfectly visible from the neighboring island. And La Gomera`s inhabitants called Tenerife the fiery island. And on La Homer eruptions were not already hundreds of thousands of years. And the island was always much supplied with fresh water. Elements of fire and elements of water - are incompatible, natives considered. And marriage of representatives of obviously related people had to bring unfortunately.
Permission to marriage was not received, the young man and the girl rushed from the rock, having got himself a breast on the same bough of a tree. Sad story, as well as many legends of this sort.
Legend the second. About Pedro and Pablo
On La Homer the beautiful “double“ rock is. It is called Pedro and Pablo`s rocks, or Rocks of Lovers. Why two man`s names - are unclear. Perhaps, at various times from them two different persons to whom they refused an opportunity to link lives with destinies of the beloved rushed.
Legend main. About Columbus and the ruler of the island
On Homer`s island once was, on gossips, “love base“ of Columbus. The next confused love story is connected with it. Here the former mistress of the Spanish king Beatriz de Bobadilla was banished, but banished delicately as often then did in Europe - is violently married to the local conquistador who had the residence there. Spaniards at that time maintained quite peace relations with island guancha, even the fraternization facts were recorded. Fraternization was that they drank goat milk from one vessel.
Peraso, in spite of the fact that married one of the most beautiful women of Spain, did not stop the love affairs. It is known that the daughter of the leader of natives whom they a long time regularly met was one of his mistresses.
So, inhabitants of the island knew of regular meetings of Peraso and his beloved. Possibly, it was known also to his beauty - the wife Beatrice (the king`s mistresses often possess also sharp mind). Natives condemned the girl for communication with the foreigner, but left in live. And Peraso was decided to be executed. The cave in which lovers met was known. And during the next appointment the ambush was organized there. The Spaniard was killed and beheaded.
After that there was a revolt of natives of Gomera, probably, they were afraid of repressions for Peraso`s murder and decided to strike a pre-emptive strike. Groups besieged the fortress in which there was a widow of the died Spaniard together with small group of soldiers. The siege proceeded 2 weeks. Fortress did not manage to be taken storm. And soon there arrived from the island Gran Canaria the big group of Spaniards. Natives were broken and on the island slaughter in which died, according to chronicles, to a half of locals began. Many were turned into slavery. After that extinction of the population and a decline of their original culture began.
And what former mistress of the Spanish king and ex-wife of the conquistador? She continued to govern on the island, raised four children. But there are certain assumptions that its private life on it did not stop. Frequent visits of Columbus on La Homer gave an impetus to long rumors about their communication. Any practical need to come on this island during the transatlantic expeditions at the seafarer was not.
All Spanish shipyards and supplies were concentrated on the neighboring island Gran - Kanariya, and Christopher Columbus from 4 expeditions two times came on La Homer and remained till some weeks there. On the island the house in which he stayed, church in which he prayed, and even a well from which it gathered water remained. In photos - these historical places.
There is even a version that the seafarer was a sign with Beatrice da Bobadilla earlier, during her stay at the Spanish yard. And that it made the contribution to a consent of the king to finance Columbus`s expedition. The king allowed the seafarer to beat out debts from one Spanish town which ran into debt to treasury. The city repaid debts three ships equipped for swimming.
A difficult and complicated story, but present inhabitants of La Gomera are proud of it, showing all places connected with Columbus`s stay on the island. And as there live nowadays islanders - it is possible to read next time.
