What it is possible to look in Vilnius in four hours at? Old city! Part 2
From all architectural constructions the greatest delight in me is always called by Christian cathedrals, and here, in ancient part of Vilnius, in Lithuanian Senamiestis, there is a lot of them that it is possible to go the whole day, and there will not be enough time everything to examine.
Now, having climbed down a Castle mountain, I passed through a small public garden to Mayronio Street (the street is called in honor of the Lithuanian poet Mayronis), and on it in about 10 minutes left to the amazing place where at once several temples were placed. On the right side of the street behind a high fence in dense greens of trees the cathedral of Saint Mikhail Arkhangel is visible . And on the left side two churches, absolutely different in style, - of Saint Anne and Bernardines . Saint Anne`s church - the real masterpiece of Gothic art, he is more than 500 years old. Not for nothing there is a legend that Napoleon Bonaparte fascinated by his beauty would like to carry away the temple on a palm to Paris. What, however, did not prevent it to give during war of 1812 a church to the order of a cavalry.
Saint Anne`s church amazes with the unusually thin bricklaying, the present anthem to skill of ancient bricklayers! As well as Gediminas`s Tower, a church is one of symbols of Vilnius. Near a church in the 19th century the belltower in pseudo-Gothic style was constructed, it is not so graceful, but in general does not break ensemble. In this region of tourists it is much more, than at Kafedralnaya Square and at Gediminas`s Tower. Especially there are a lot of Poles, once Vilno was the Polish city. The internal furniture of a cathedral is so magnificent, as well as outside. Color stained glass windows, the graceful arches, ancient body, at sculptures …
But should look also on the church of Bernardines standing in the neighbourhood which full name - Saint Francis and Saint Barnardine`s church . This massive building was probably used not only as prayful, but also for defense because on it there are loopholes on a northern facade. In Soviet period the church of Bernardines was used as a warehouse. And after restoration of independence it was returned to monks - Franciscans. Here restoration works are still conducted. The church is declared by a monument of cultural heritage of Lithuania, object of the state importance. Excursions for tourists by appointment will be organized, but it is possible to go freely and individually.
Near two churches there is one more sight - a monument to Polish to the poet Adam Mickiewicz. Authors of a monument sculptor Gyadiminas Yokubonis and architect Vitautas Chekanauskas. Having passed
meters 500 on the same Mayronio Street, I appeared at a magnificent Orthodox church - church of the Prechisty Mother of God or the Dormition of the Theotokos . This church became the most important temple of Orthodox Christians of Lithuania six centuries ago. On both sides from a main entrance to the temple in niches there are plates with inscriptions. At the left the following is written: “The cathedral metropolitan cathedral for the sake of Uspeniya Prechistyya of the Virgin based at conducted Drevle. the prince Lithuanian Olgerda in 1346“ . On the right plate the test reports: “It is restored in reign blagochestiveyshago the sovereign emperor Alexander II at the metropolitan Lithuanian Iosif Semashko in 1868“. during existence the temple was reconstructed, some time (since 1609) it was under the authority of uniatsky Catholic church, then nearly 200 years belonged to the Vilnius University, the library, audiences, the museum were placed there. And only at Alexander II the temple got present shape and was returned to Orthodox Christians. Internally furniture of church very elegantly and solemnly - the high arches, a rich iconostasis, a set of icons. The service already ended, but having come into the temple, I surely put a candle for health of all living.
My way is farther lay on very narrow small streets of the Old city. Here the Vilnius art gallery on Didzhyoyi Street, 4. It was placed in the former palace of counts Hodkevichey. Externally the palace did not impress me, the three-storyed building in style of classicism, and it was not necessary to come into the museum at me time any more.
Here, nearby, on a recross of streets Piles and Didzhyoyi (Castle and Great) very much liked orthodox church in the name Saint Paraskev Friday which the majority designates just Pyatnitsky church. About it there is a set of trade tents with souvenirs and products of masters of national crafts. Once, in olden days “Friday“ had a fish market. The Pyatnitsky church is well-known still that in it Peter I christened the blackamoor Hannibal, the great-grandfather A. S. Pushkina. One more beautiful temple located on the way between Pyatnitsky church and Town Hall Square - the orthodox church of Saint Nikolay constructed as testifies an inscription on a memorable wall plate, in 1340 cares of the second wife of the Grand duke the Lithuanian Olgerd Yulianiya (Ulyana). The stone building was built in 1514, and in the second half of the 19th century when Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire, it was changed in the Byzantine style. On color scale it is similar a little to Pyatnitsky church.
In general, I had “to accelerate“ walk not to be late to the train. It was necessary to address several times passersby that showed how to pass towards the station, and at the same time to see both a town hall, and “Dawn gate“, and Saint Kazimir`s church. And every time I was answered very kindly though not always it were Russians, never told that do not understand in Russian. Some still told something about this or that temple.
Very much impresses the magnificent church of Saint Kazimir constructed by monks - Jesuits in Baroque style. But from - for a bright sun I managed to photograph it only on the one hand, and very elaborate, colourful tower is not visible.
After St. Kazimir`s church I went outside Aushros Vartay - “Dawn gate“ which goes just to these gate - to one of the most known and visited places in Vilnius. Aushros Warta - Dawn Gate, are also a symbol of Vilnius, they are for the first time mentioned in 1514. These gate - only that remained from ten gate which were in an ancient defensive wall. At first they were called gate of Myadininkay because through them roads just left towards this district. Near gate there was separately standing chapel with a wonder-working icon of Blessed Virgin of Maria. In the 19th century after the next reconstruction the chapel was placed over gate, the wonder-working icon was transferred there. Catholics call this icon image of God`s Mother Ostrobramskaya or the Vilnius Madonna . And Dawn Gate are called still “Sharp Bramah“. When I approached gate, in a chapel there was a service, very beautifully sang, and many tourists below crowded.
Here I finished the short travel on the Lithuanian capital. To the station it was necessary to go minutes 15. Of course, I did not manage to sit in summer cafe, to have dinner, drink coffee with cake - but it is already not so important, my soul sang from the received impressions, and the camera was loaded by nearly one hundred frames.
You can visit Vilnius in transit, do not waste time, take a walk in the Old city!
