What is passion from the point of view of religion? For certain each person had to observe
in life or most to endure situations when some unknown force forced it to arrive definitely, to work by the principle about which the apostle Pavel spoke: “ … that I want, I do not do and that I do not want, I do “. I.e. the person got to a certain dependence, and already neither the common sense, nor will power could avert the approaching event which could not be avoided. It already completely took control of the person as delusion, and implementation of this event was only business of time.
Such state when the person has a strong attraction to object of desire and to which it not in forces to resist as is not able to control itself any more, is called passion.
It turns out because the feeling something pleasant, tested by the person in the past, constantly forces it to seek to test something similar now, even in spite of the fact that it eventually will do to it irreparable harm.
The passion, as they say in the sacred writing of many religions, in itself is not a sin yet, and is only its inducing reason when the person already got used to sin and almost cannot refuse it (examples of passions: anger, gluttony, arrogance, vanity …). It is similar to drug addiction, gamblings … to
With passions, according to attendants of various religions and traditions, it is unambiguously necessary to fight:
“ One of laws of Trade, Divine about us, is - so will arrange life of everyone and the course of accidents in it that it, using them it is reasonable, could clear in the fastest and most convenient way itself of passions “ (St. Theophan the Recluse).
Still it is possible to call passion an illness, a human nature illness, abnormality of some of its mental properties. And this abnormality (egoism, arrogance, feeling of own importance, impunity …) human nature, being unrestrained, literally forces the person to make a sin.
In the first lecture “ About rejection of the world “ The Reverend of an avv Dorofei about it writes:
“ Because other a passion essence, and other - sins. Passions essence: anger, vanity, voluptuousness, hatred, evil lust and so forth. Sins the essence the actions of passions when who carries out them in practice, i.e. makes a body those affairs to which induce his passions because it is possible to have passions, but not to work on them “.
As to arrive to the pious person that the passion did not lead him to a sin?
We find the answer to this question at the Reverend Isikhiya Iyerusalimsky (5th century) the pupil Gregory the Theologian who figuratively gives us internal fight of the person: “ From a prilog - the set of thoughts, and from these are thin business sensual. Immediately repaying the first with Jesus, avoided also the subsequent. Also he will be enriched with delightful divine maintaining in which sight of God will be inherent everywhere, and will put against It a mind mirror, is lit with It, like the pure glass put against the sensual sun. Then, at last, mind, having reached the last limit of the desires, pochit from any another in itself contemplation “.
